  • They weren't expecting the snow, and when it came, they were directed to continue filming. It was perfect.

  • Foarte, frumos!!

  • .....bad aim?

  • Does anyone else feel that there needs to be more closure with the House of Dagger's plan before the movie ends?!?! Too sad.

  • He didn't throw his dagger because they would suffer longer. Freedom and is a hard thing to fight. It is harder to fight then LOVE. He offered freedom and no more fighting as well as love. How could she refuse?

  • Leo's purpose to kill Jin is to have his chance with May (get rid of love enemy), when May sacrifice herself for Jin. Leo also lost May, therefore his purpose of killing Jin is gone too. Leo's heart and soul died with May together anyways. That's why Leo walked away not killing Jin, to some extent, also to honor May's choices.

  • @scorpioboy2k Interesting. I still wish Leo fell while walking away and never got up... I love how Jin was a guy who just wanted to get laid but then he learns to love and though it ends sad, he realizes he loves her.

  • 1. I thought the movie stunk although it did have some good scenes

    2. May wanted to save her lover and was trying to deflect the dagger Leo threw and probably still likes Leo

    3. I don't know why Leo would do that, maybe he wanted her to kill him or he was just messing with them. No idea. He's a confusing jerk.

    4. I think Leo realized it doesn't matter anymore now that she is dead. (If I can't have her, no one will) And his guilt woke him up I guess. I wish he had fallen and never gotten up...

  • @MissKateSamuels Leo knows he can't never have her heart, so he didn't throw the dagger and hope May's dagger will kill him, that way at least he will die with May together. But Leo didn't expect that May's love for Jin is so strong that she killed herself to save Jin. Sad ending, but brilliant piece. LOVE the movie!!!

  • Where's the spoiler ending? This is exactly the same ending as on the DVD? I see the title for just for high ratings>-<

  • She threw her dagger because she thought that Leo had thrown his. She threw her dagger to cut his off before it killed Jin. If she had used her dagger to kill Leo her death would have been pointless because her love, Jin, would still have died. This way, she saved Jin from Leo's dagger. Too bad Leo hadn't actually thrown his though...

  • ragged is heartfelt and makes me cry. EXCELLENT

  • One of my favorite movie scenes/sections of all time. I agree with 1968avayang, the 'throwing the dagger' fake was the ultimate test to see who she loved. He didn't need to kill Jin, he had already lost everything and most likely his life too, he just wanted to know beyond a doubt and what greater way to test love then to see if it's worthy of sacrifice? What a powerful movie. I love it and pity the haters.

  • How come I can't find this version of the "Lovers theme" that starts around 0:06? It's not on the soundtrack :(

  • may killed herself to save her lover, even if that costed her life (which it did) lei didn't kill jin because he never thought she would kill herself

  • May knew she could not kill him with the little strength she had, so she tried to intercept Leo's dagger hoping to save Jin's life. Leo was testing May's love for Jin by threatened to kill Jin with his dagger and found out quickly. There was no reason to kill Jin since Leo had lost everything and he knew that by killing Jin could bring nothing back. Leo conceded and walked away which is a heroic thing to do.

  • If I ever feel sad or frustrated, I watch this and the sheer hilarity of the dubbing cheers me right up. If you have to dub it at all (most of the population with access to a television can also read) why not try and do it in a less cliche kung fu movie way? Ruins the mystique and romance, but it's damn funny!

  • Why do directors like killing us with sad endings? ughh i have to stop watching such sad movies and dramas!! im running outta tissue boxes..

  • The English is odd. The guys sound like a cartoon anime thing, and she sounds like an old grandma. The original always sounds better (and subtitles for those who don't understand are good).

  • @Destroyer220 esp American English :P...

  • Mei didn't kill Leo because she'd rather give her life to save Jin rather than give her life to kill Leo.

Leo didn't throw his dagger because he wanted to see if she's really do it. (lol)

Leo didn't kill Jin afterwards because when Mei smiled that meant 'Aw, dude, honor my sacrifice and don't kill Jin, kk?'

    o.o

  • At least they didn't dub the song

  • the english dub ruins the movie, ESPECIALLY when you know some chinese like i do and know that even the subtitles are slightly off...

  • Leo didn't throw the dagger because he still believed that Mei may still love him and he wanted (needed) to know for sure. On top of that, he also knew that if he was wrong then at least Jin would not get Mei either bacause she would bleed to death.

Mei didn't kill Leo because she obviously did still care for him but her priority was to protect Jin. So it was a hollow victory for Leo in the end.

ps. The dubbing is awful and just shows why foreign language films should never be dubbed in English

  • Just throwing out a theory here, but could it be that Mei threw the dagger not only to save Jin, but because she did care for Leo as well? I mean, it seemed like she did have feelings for Leo, but they just weren't as strong as the feelings she had for Jin. So she wanted to save them both, I guess? Just an idea...

  • whats the name of ths song at 5:20 If you know please message me

  • Leo didn't throw his dagger because he thought that Mei was just going to pierce him with hers. This would cause Leo and Mei to die together. Leo didn't think that she was going to intercept his dagger instead. I believe that Mei decided to intercept Leo's dagger toward Jin instead because if she were to hit Leo, Leo's dagger would've hit Jin. So, Mei was trying to save Jin's life.

  • answer to ur ?...... it suck! she want her cake and eat it too! to see if she really love him! she don't love him!

  • Thanks for the upload! Wonderful movie..... sad ending......

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS MOSTLY IN LIFE TOO.....

LIFE AINT A FAIRY TALE ALL THE TIME!!!!

Would you die for your LOVE?

  • Yeah, this is a GREAT movie, but this ending is TERRIBLE..

If Leo was so pissed off at Jin for stealing Mei's love, then he should have finished the job instead of stumbling off!

    Lame!

  • the real chinese speaks its much better....

  • May didn't kill Leo because Jin would still die, she choose to save him instead.

Leo didn't throw his dagger because if May was really willing to die for Jin he didn't want to keep on living without her and would rather die by her hand.

Leo didn't kill Jin because now they would both have to live with the pain of having lost the woman they loved. It was worse than killing him.

  • such a sad ending........

  • Hey, at least they didn't dub the song!

  • All 3 wonted 2 die !!!Leo May to kill him you cant have it both way's!!!

  • do ya'll he technically to Xiao Mei lasy dying breathing when he kissed her. do u kn ow that really sucks on so many levels of messed up love.. and then leo just walks away like a punk.

  • Why isn't music on the soundtrack?? I wants it! *cries*

PS... The English dubs leave something to be desired.

  • What a great movie from start to finish, it's so different than what America is fed on a daily basis where all we ever see anymore is old washed up celebs/reality television shows where everyone gets drunk/naked, and the sad part is what is our kids learning from it. I would rather have my young teenagers watch HFD, with some violence and emotional scenes any day over the garbage that is spewed over our televisions.

  • My opinion is a little diferent...I think Leo hoped she would kill him with her dagger, but she prefered to save Jin's life on all costs...she prefered to die instead watch him die...Or maybe Leo just wanted to see if she's ready to give away her life for Jin,and he didn't kill him after that, because he saw that May give away her life for that person to keep living,so what's the point in killing him, when she's gone, and he'll never have her?Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my opinion ^_^

  • Instead of her watching them both kill each other, which they probably would have done, she decided to end it for good. The look she gave Leo was basically saying "Are you Happy", while she bled to death in the snow.

  • Also we have to remember that sometimes people grow apart from each other, loyal men and women especially in Ancient China/Japan cultures where love was based off of loyalty and honor. These values were cherished, and sometimes that love turns to anger when one grows apart and without, and the other is still in love, fully committed. Leo actually went in as a spy deep inside the corrupt government/police for his people/HFD.

  • If you watch the earlier parts in HFD, you can quickly tell that there is somethings strange going one between Mei and LEO. When she threw her blade in front of Jin that was basically saying goodbye, she was going to die no matter what.

  • Then answer to the ultimate question why did Leo not throw the dagger. First of all people have to Mei's quote 'then I will kill you " directed at Leo if Leo would have thrown the dagger Jin. What Mei meant my that quote was that she would kill him by killing herself, she was not talking about actually hitting him with the dagger. If she wanted to actually hit him she would have! So, the look she gave Leo after she pulled it out was basically telling us that point blank.

  • omg, -__- . all i can say in that i love JIN his so cute :).

  • the music who is it by ? and whats it called?

  • now continued... so when mei throws her dagger and it flies in front of jins face it is then apparent to all three of them that the dagger was thrown to block leos dagger, then, to answer the leo walking away question, him and captain jin were going to die anyway. the only bit that puzzles me is that why were they still trying to kill each other evn after they were certainly going to die? but anyway..yeah thats the theory.

  • basically, i have watched the dvd with zhang yimou (director) and zhang ziyi (mei) and it is not certain why this all happened but they did agree on one theory so hear me out:

leo pretended to throw the dagger so that mei would kill him (he hoped) because he no longer had anyone and wanted to have forgivness from mei (he had given up on killing captain jin by this point). so as mei threw the dagger leo was hoping to get killed or just see what mei would do in this position. i will continue..

  • well Leo didnt want to kill them anymore, he make the move so that May kill him.

  • this scene made me cry like a baby!

  • 1: i think she wanted to hit the dagger, wich leo wanted to throw to jin.

    2. he wanted to "test" mei how much she loves jin.

    3. as he realized, that she would kill herself for jin he realized, she doesn't loves him... and i'm sure, he was very sad about that... so, he jsut walked away instead of killing jin. and if you go into the situation of leo, i think everybody would jsut walke away...

every time i wath the end my eyes gets wet...

  • Hi 12345Fok12345 ! I don' t want to think any more - it s just a movie ! right ? and we are Human not Machine - Our thinking may be Change - it defend ..

  • haha, yes, you're right^^ but if i look a movie, i sometimes raise myself tooo much into a movie^^ ...

  • Comment removed

  • great video

  • I'm tired of people crying saying dubbed is so bad yes some is but STFU!!! some people would rather watch the action and not have to read what people are saying at the same time and don't lie having to read during a fight scene is annoying!!!.... so do me a favor if you hate dubbed don't watch it and just STFU!!!! Thank you..... ITS OVER 9000!!!!!!! LOL once again STFU!

  • But you should notice that, they usually don't talk when their fighting :P

  • What do you think?

Why didnt May kill Leo (Andy) like she said she would?

Why didnt Leo throw his dagger?

Why didnt Leo kill Jin afterwards instead of walking away?

Because Mei killed herself to save jin and Leo still loved her so why would he kill what she killed herself for ? O.o

  • dubbed edition is nothing compared to the original movie

  • damn straight, but as far as english dubs go this wasnt terrible

  • hmong version? no offense but fuck that i'd rather listen to the french version

  • Why didnt Leo kill Jin afterwards instead of walking away? He realized the damage he caused, oh and because he and Jin had just been fighting and slashing each other apart. He didn't have the energy or the will to try to kill Jin. Energy because physically exhausted and his wounds. He lost his will when he killed the one he loved and realized how she loved another.

  • Why didnt Leo throw his dagger? Well, this is hard. He probably realized he couldn't have Mei and wanted to see how strong her love for Jin was because she had only fallen in love with him for 3 days as Leo stated earlier

  • first off, dubbing ruins movies. Especially asain ones where the language is so unique that the words and how they are said are powerful in themselves.

So the dubbing of this ruins this scene.

Why didnt Mei kill Leo (Andy) like she said she would? Mei did not kill Leo because she still was conflicted. Remember in the scene where she made love with Jin? He asked if she was having trouble forgetting about another man. That man was Leo. She couldn't kill him.

  • the director Zhang Yimou did an excellent job everytime he creates a masterpiece of historicity, choosing the right words for each scene and the cinematography is just a spectacle in and of itself. Good storyline.

    8/10

  • Man the english audio just ruins it, the mandarin with english subtitles is awesome and has more originality....

I think however you look at it, she didnt want to kill Lei because of his 3 years of dedication to impress her and serve her people and saving her life on many occasions... so in that sense she was endebted...

Lei couldnt kill Jin because he just killed the same person he dedicated his years to and he is beyond anything, hence dropping the dagger and walking away, a sense of end...

  • english subtitles are so much better your right

  • @billalsalafi i know right, i wish somone would upload one with english subtitles rather than just dubed, but i can't find one.

  • Why didnt May kill Leo (Andy) like she said she would? She loved him and she didn't want to.

Why didnt Leo throw his dagger? He didn't want to see her die and he thought she wouldn't do it.

Why didnt Leo kill Jin afterwards instead of walking away? He was crushed not only losing his love, but inadverdently killing her as well.

  • llore muxo ene sta escena =(

  • what's the name of the song in the ending, that he sings?

  • the beauty song.

  • and since Mei dies, Leo knows it would be worse for Jin to live, having held the woman he loves as she dies.

  • Mei said she would kill Leo with dagger he had stabbed her with if he threw his dagger at Jin. So Leo, still angry at her for loving Jin rather than him, and knowing that if she threw the dagger, she would die of blood loss, pretends to throw the dagger at Jin, knowing Mei will throw hers. So Mei dies :(

  • hey ocpauls on my friends list!

  • I saw this film along tima ago and this is the scene i remember best, it is so beautiful, the music, snow and their emotion it is just breattaking

  • to your question "Why didnt May kill Leo (Andy) like she said she would?"

i think she wanted to hit the dagger, wich leo has thrown to jin. so that jin survives.

  • oh wow, this is so meaningful. the director of this movie really know how tomake movie that so touching! this is the 2 thumps up movie! def got to have it on your dvd rack! Jin is so freaking HOT than Leo!

  • One of the most beautiful end of films I have seen ...

  • leo wasn't killed, because the blood of him got against xiaomei's dagger, on this way did the dagger change his course.

Leo didn't throw his dagger because he wanted to give Jin emotional pain, which is more terrible than the dead.

Then leo realised that the love between jin and xiaomei is that strong and that his part is done. So he went away, maybe also to protect his own life.

There we can see, that leo was very egoistic ^^

  • omg. we are so disgusting...voice overs...how pathetic..

  • ok this is guna sound weird but i found it kind of strange and just a little annoying when may is like alive and then u think shes dead and then its like shes dead but then shes alive again and then once and for all shes dead it just kinda peed me off ......... I LOVE THE MOVIE THOUGH !!!!

  • Sorry, it wouldn't let me post the rest of my interpretation: I think Mei pulled hers out b/c she knew Leo would try and kill Jin, and the slow-mo of her dagger hitting the drop of blood shows that she would have saved him, if Leo would have thrown it, by blocking the droplet from Jin. However, she certainly wasn't aiming to kill Leo, due to the fact that it hit the tree, reason being that he had saved her and loved her, and just driven mad by his despair, so she didn't want to kill him either.

  • Here's my idea of what happened : Leo pretended to throw his dagger either because he was vicious enough to want to have Mei kill herself by pulling out her own dagger and have Jin suffer for it, or kind enough that he knew Mei would pull it out anyway so he would just allow her to kill him as he knew she didn't love him any more and he wouldn't hurt Jin. His reasons are sort of ambiguous.

  • the english subs just ruins the movie if ya ask me

  • @siuyutlong :o is the true if u see in spanish still better

  • @kejama91

    yeah

    i just saw it

    and it was cooler

  • @siuyutlong ._. yeah but without it i cant understand i love this movie lol

  • @siuyutlong dubs or subs? i think dubs

  • i'm sorry, these dubs are just awfull...

  • Also, I don't think that she does not kill Leo because not only has he saved her life before, but letting him live the rest of his life knowing that he has killed the love of his life and taking away another man's happiness. Though he acts as the antagonist, he achieves grace at the end by sparing Jin's life.

  • IThere was no way that she would've missed if she intende to kill Leo. Instead, she makes it so that the blood from Leo doesn't get on Jin. This way, she is able to settle the dispute between the 2 men by picking Jin, but saving Leo's life so Leo will feel the guilt of her blood in his hands thus not trying to kill Jin anymore. This the most peaceful way of saving Jin's life without anymore bloodshed.

  • Leo didn't throw his because Mei tells him she was going to kill him. He was counting on Mei to kill him. Yes, a form of "If I can't have no one else will", but it was also for both "I do not want to live if Mei is dead".

Both men, Jin, by moving closer to Leo's blade, and Leo. not throwing his blade hoping Mei would kill him, were showing Mei how much they both love her by offering their lives.

Leo walks away because for Jin and himself, the object of their love is gone. They both lived.

  • Leo walks away because he feels defeated. That's leo, he gives up easy, do you see how Jin stayed there and held her til she died? That's the kind of man she wanted one who will do the right thing

  • Leo wanted to know how much Mei truly loved Jin so he tricked her by making her think he was throwing the dagger;and by Mei removing the dagger, killing her by blood loss, it showed who she really loved and like RainaYuuhi said in a way it was "if i cant have her, you cant."

  • I believe he didn't throw it, because he knew she would if he made it look like he was; it's a form of "If I can't have her, you can't either."

  • nooo she new, tht his blood was going to mark jins (meaning he owns jin basically)so she stopped the blood from hitting jin thats why her dagger went across his face to stop the mark he would of left on jin sillyyyyyy lol

  • *cries* why is this dubbed!

subs are so much better, it just sounds crap when they talk english.

  • There are other channels with the subs, but they are hard to read because they are white and displayed on a snowy background.

  • i hate this movie but i love it as well because it's very touchy but i wish the movie had a happy ending :'(

  • Mei threw the dagger to save Jin,she thought that Leo will throw his at Jin so she did that to save Jin,but Leo didn't threw the dagger so she was tricked.Either Leo wanted to trick her or either he could't throw it

This last part of the movie really touched my soul, too sad...I don't like sad ends...but because of this the movie is even better

  • "in memory of anita mui"

    is that a true story?????

  • anita mui died, before they begun to shot the movie

  • Its an incredibly powerful scene, especially the way it can be interpreted in so many different ways. Maybe Mei didnt want either to die, maybe she was tricked, we can theorise all day, the only person will know is the author...

Brillant scene and incredibly powerful. The music really adds a massive impact and truely touches the soul.

  • I reckon Leo wanted Mei to throw the dagger at him so they could both die together.

  • No "steam puff" clouds coming out of their mouths when they speak, can't be cold nuff for that blizzard!

  • keen eyes. must be computer generated.

  • i think the drop of blood from Leo(Andy's) hand changed the path of her dagger :/ that's why it misses him :/

  • none of the 2 daggers were thrown at anyone..she threw hers to block the one they guy PRETENDED to throw

  • so sad....

  • nn ci sono parole per descrivere questa scena!

è la vera essenza del amore!

  • So sad :-(

the song: Kathleen Batlle - lovers

  • I love the movie!

But i seen him in chinese xD

And there it is much prettyer if I have to speak the true

But i had english subtitels then

But it is a very pretty but sad movie

  • May did not kill Leo because she wanted him to live life without ever having the chance to love her again. Also, Leo now knows, who she truly loves in life and in death, Jin. BQQ WHQ. Such sweet sorrow for everyone.

  • what is the ending song?! i love it!

  • Takeshi is one of the best actors there is. His performances are full of his heart and soul and he does'nt play his own persona in his characters like almost every other actor does. He's oscar worthy!

  • it was so sad but one of my fav movies.

  • omg that dub -hilarious

    love the movie tho

  • such a beautiful ending!!!!! bravo

  • this my favourite foreign movie. I think it was way way better than crouching tiger. I cried my heart out at the end and the lead pair had a lot of chemistry they should do another movie together. also music was amazing and fit really well with the scenes.

  • i cry everytime i see this part. lol

  • Me, too. Lol.

  • Jin pretending to throw the dagger was a test of her love for Jin...to see if she would truly die for him. She didn't kill him because 1) he was too close to him- Jin would have been hit anyway even if she killed Leo, 2)she figured that since she chose to die for Jin, Leo would spare him seeing that.

  • it sounds even worse with the american accent, chinese is way better

  • I totally agree it sound awful with the American accent, doesn't show the same emotion.

  • i agree with you simschic148

  • THANX!!!!

  • wahahaa dub sucs XD

  • Dub sounds so funny :D

  • She Doesnt Love Leo In Any Way. Leo Wanted To See If She Would Really Try 2 Save Him, So He Pretended To Throw It. The Dagger Was Supposed 2 Have Hit The Other Guys Dagger Thats Y It Went In The Middle.

  • I think Mae didn't kill Leo because in a way she loved him too just not as much as she loved Jin.

I don't think Leo threw his dagger because he wanted to know if Jin really did love Mae and if so he would stand between them so the dagger woudln't hit her.

Leo didn't kill Jin afterwards because he realized Jin wasn't only playing a game with Mae, he realized that Jin really did love her and Leo made a mistake by assuming she was leaving him for a fool.

  • English dub is awful, as always.

  • where did that drop of blood come from ??

  • the dagger

  • Where can I download the English dubbed version of this movie? ..man i've got to learn Chinese!

  • dang i think i prefer reading subtitles it just sounds better

  • I think the voices sound foolish and clumsy in english but in chinese they sound really serious that is why I like the chinese voices better.

  • Why didn't Mei kill Leo? Because she would not have been able to kill Leo before he could kill Jin, she would only be able to defend him.

Leo, didn't throw his dagger because he wanted to see if she truly would have sacrificed herself for Jin, in this case she did so he knew there would be no hope in ever having her love again.

Leo didn't take this opportunity to kill Jin because Leo was completely defeated by the fact that he did not have Mei's love anymore. That alone "killed" Leo.

  • I love the movie, but the "No Mei! Mei! No Mei no!" TOTALLY reminds of the "Babe wait! Babe wait babe no!" scene in Hot Rod.

  • umm... does ne 1 know where i can buy this movie????

  • Probably my favourite martial arts film ever. The look of the film alone is absolute eye-sex.

  • I couldnt agree more.

  • The best film ending i have ever seen

  • I have seen this film million times! :P Until now the last scene still breaks my heart. One of the best films...a classic!

  • I have seen this film million times! :P Until now the last scene still breaks my heart. One of the best films...a classic!

  • I agree the song is so beautiful.

  • some please tell me the name of the song?? the violin bit,

  • Lovers, by Kathleen Battle i believe...

  • "Lovers" by Shigeru Umebayashi. There are a few versions of this theme on the soundtrack and Kathleen Battle sings a song in English to it. The soundtrack is beautiful and worth buying.

  • where did all that snow come from? i got confused at that part, had they been fighting for years? :S

  • Its the next ice age. They had been battling for several billion years.

  • btw, isn't that kaneshiro himself dubbing?

  • om my god the english voice fucking sucks.... I nearly laugh myself to death... The cantonese voice is way better... oOOooOo Don't pull it out or you'll bleed to death.. No don't do that.. awful voice over,,,,

  • i absolutely love this film!!! but yeah it is much better with the original audio :S

    as for your questions, this is what i think;

    1. Mei couldn't kill Leo because she still cared for him, just not in that way

    2. Leo was testing to see if Mei would sacrifice her life not actually trying to kill Jin- maybe a kind of 'if i can't have her no one can' thing?

    3. After she died, there was no more point. he knew Mei's feelings and just felt empty

    thanks for posting :]

  • yeah could you upload the chinese version? the english is too cheesy and it ruins the whole scene for me . . .

  • wtf its in english!!

i prefer it when u read it !

  • Dubs sucks

  • uhhh. the english is really cheesy. it would be some much better if it was in chinese with english subs, but besides that; AWW. that's sadd.

  • Thanks for posting this, but it would be better in the Chinese. The English is corny.

  • good film

    excellent fight scenes

  • "Lovers" - Performed by Kathleen Battle, the soprano singer.

  • cry~ it's so sad but really good

  • does anyone no where i can watch the full thing? xx

  • you could buy it on dvd.

  • You could just go and buy it instead of ripping people off...... That's just an option..

  • zhang ziyi kind of has a role in every martial arts movie from china XDDD

  • Shigeru Umebayashi - Lovers (Flower Garden).mp3

Shigeru Umebayashi - Lovers (Title Song).mp3

  • Thanks for the info
