It seemed like in this movie, unlike in the book, Lennie WAS laughing at Curley. Slim said about how he tried to throw a scare into Slim and then said "I seen him"; it sounded like Lennie said, "yeah I seen him"; I thought from the book that Lennie was smiling because George had just told him about the rabbits.

Lon Chaney Jr created the character of Lennie so well that in years to come, directors would ask him to repeat it in their low budget horror films. It was perhaps the most sensitive rolle that Chaney had done to date and even his Wolf Man portrayal has to take a back seat in the depth of the acting he displayed.

Well it was made back in the time when violence wasn't shown as much. Why do you think all those Universal Monsters either killed you offscreen or just strangled you? They only SAID the people got their hands crushed or their throats torn out. It doesn't make it terrible just less violent. It's not much different from the 2000's either. Both look less kinndly on violence and gore. It still does a good job with the story.
