I was playing this yesterday and realised that the sound he makes when he gets hit sounds literally identical to the character in a game called Deliverance on the Amiga.
Heretic has some shitty Audio. Almost EVERY Computer I use it on sounds a scratchy. Is there a setting I am over-looking perhaps? I don't want to bash a descent game. Thanks!

The game in this video is "Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders" which is the same as the original Heretic but with two additional episodes "The Ossuary" and "The Stagnant Demesne".
This video was incredible! It included the feeling of "most epic battle in history" but had the distinct characteristics of magic wielders. There was even some storytelling, not that common for a game with that amount of action.
I must have given a hell of an impression at the time of it's release! I never played the game and it popped my eyes several times so I can't imagine back then.
ya know what they need to do, is combine doom and heretic into 1 game, all the monsters from both, all the weapons, all heretics artifacts. Heretics tomb of power works on doom weapons too, a few more weapons and monsters added. Keep the sprites style game- none of that now a days style bullfuck with this one-and call it DOOMATIC.
I made a few(4) whip ass Heretic levels, they're really big, intricate levels with lots of fucks and just barley enough ammo and armor and plenty of health to get by. If anyone's interested tell me yer Email and il send it/them long as you tell me what you thought of playen them....
@mrfelipeist Mouse and jumps yes, but I turned auto aim off as you can see in this video. So the game is much much harder, cause you really need the aim for the enemies like at 01:20 , and the tomb of power in combination with phoenix rod is useles without auto aim:)
I enjoyed watching this because I only have Heretic 2 (played for hours on that one). Other gamers have told me Heretic 2 is a continuation of the first. I never played the first, but I immediately recognized the serpent rider in this scene. If they did make a 3rd, I wonder what would happen after Morcalavin vanished? Do you suppose Corvus would have became some all mighty being ruling over Parthoris? What do you think would have happened with Corvus if there was a 3rd?
oh man.. this were the times you know. All those great games from the 90's. I think that they are way better than the games now. It has so much memories. Duke nukem, heretic doom blood and everything were the best!

Both games are truly original. Hexen has the coolest weapons. I tried to get my hands on a copy of the entire game of Heretic, but found it to be pretty much impossible. On the N64, I became addicted to Hexen- and Hexen is also available for the Playstation. They should have ported Heretic to the consoles as well...
Ya know whats amazing to me is this whole generation of 2-d sprite based shooters are still extremely playable today. Heretic, Hexen, Doom and Duke have gotta be some of the greatest shooters of all time, and all of them are still a blast to fire up and play after all these years.
Final boss was very annoying especially on highest difficulty. Loading last map on highest difficulty using DM mod which means only beginning weapons and no items at start - that was probably the hardest challenge I've ever seen in shooters while playing.
I remember playing this game during elementery school (pardon my spelling if it's wrong). But I would always have the God code on so I couldn't die. And I would even have it on the lowest difficulty. Of course, when you're about 11 year old, you sometimes want to cheat to succeed in games. Still, good times.

I totally agree with you, I wasnt that happy about Doom3 when it came out as they took away the classic shoot em up element and made it into a horror survival game :(

Google doomsday hq, go there, download it for your Operating System. Select the appropriate WAD files from the original game (it has explicit instructions when you run it for the first time) and you're good!
Of all the Doom clones Heretic and Dark Forces were the best. I know it goes against convention, but I'd say that both of those games were better than the original Doom. Better graphics, more creativity and in my opinion better level design.
Did you guys notice @ 7:24 that there is ammo sitting right in front of teleport, although you don't need ammo past that point - and to those of you that want to play these games: if you seek them hard enough, you'll certainly come across them *wink* *wink*.
I agree, i've never been a particular fan of the theme, but Heretic (and Hexen) were awesome. I even played it when the to me more appealing Quake came out.
Bajate GZdoom (gratis de su sitio) y tambien bajate Heretic.wad de algun lado (trata usando bittorent y buscando el torrent "doom wads" por google) y pon el .wad en el folder de GZdoom y ya!!! Se pueden jugar Doom 1, 2, Final Doom (TNT and Plutonia), Heretic, Hexen, y Strife en Vista con GZdoom..... Si GZdoom no funciona entonces trata con Zdoom, pero los graficos de GZdoom son mejores.
Azteroth666 you can play Heretic on Vista using GZdoom (download it from its site) just put the heretic.wad file in its folder and that's it. You need that file though.

If you like 3d textures and more modern day graphic and audio support, use the doomsday engine and play Jheretic Jdoom and the like.
Like me, if you want to play Heretic or Doom as close to vanilla as possible, use Zdoom. Doom 95 can't run heretic + it sucks, and the other source ports are mighty buggy when it comes to multiplayer and coop play.
This isn't the last episode of heretic, it's only the last episode of episode 3. The game was re-released a year or so later with patches, updates etc, and had 2 more episodes. The final level is 'Field of judgement', episode 5 level 8, and has a number of Minotaurs for a big finish. 5* for a great game none the less.
Look for the re-release as 'Heretic -- Shadow of the Serpent Riders'

boy i was wrong, the 1st episode was so hard and annoying, i hated it. but the 2nd episode so far is much more fun, the game is fun and all but that 1 episode annoyed me.
update your version to version 1.3. I think it should add the last 2 additional episodes in. The version you got was probably the version that only be received via mail order, while those who payed like $10 in the store got only the first episode back in the day.
i consider myself lucky man for having this gem of a game in its original box (the datadisc one, shaped like a book with a big skull on its front). Really loved this game when i was young. still today it has somehow wicked and evil atmosphere that no other game can best. And whats really great about it and also very underrated is the soundtrack. It just sounds so wickedly wicked its unbelievable . I always thought that if they made black metal without guitars it would end up sounding like this.
heretic is best run on latest gzdoom; he may have used fraps but its not free - the shareware version records games up to 60 secs i think, and is watermarked. you need to google some more if you want a free retail copy of fraps.
i palyed Heretic when i was 5,but,the only part i can rememebr when i was fighting some enemies (those golem like monsters) and,when somehting crushed me bad xD
similar thing happened here. I saw what I used to think was a helmet thing. I said Ooooo me wants. Then I get it to find it is a new weapon, the dragon claw. I fire it out and I was so into that weapon and firing at nothing, then I say let's go. I can't move, and blood was spewing out. I was like help... I'm stuck... Then I died.
I still didn't realize that I got crushed back then, until I got a few years older, and saw that the ceiling actually came down.
This isn't the last episode. The last episode is episode 5. True you kill D'Spiral, however the other 2 episodes take place during the time you get lost for along time up until heretic 2.
I still can't decide which is better, Doom or Heretic... I guess Doom, just because of the second game (first was awesome, second one literally, LITERALLY defined my childhood)

Personally, I think the Doomsday/Jdoom engine has very unresponsive controlls. I perfer GZDoom myself or skulltag.

Ahh heretic. My favorite FPS to date. The creativity mixed with the doom engine makes it nearly the perfect game for its time.
Why people lack this ability now? I'll never know, appealing to the masses seems to be the primary goal.

If you like 3d textures and more modern day graphic and audio support, use the doomsday engine and play Jheretic Jdoom and the like.
Like me, if you want to play Heretic or Doom as close to vanilla as possible, use Zdoom. Doom 95 can't run heretic + it sucks, and the other source ports are mighty buggy when it comes to multiplayer and coop play.

Hexen, and Korax (the grinning priest at the end of this video) ROCK, but Heretic doesn't. Neither does Heretic 2 or Hexen 2.
In other words, Hexen was the only decent game in the trilogy. Sorta like Star Wars 5.

This isn't the last episode of heretic, it's only the last episode of episode 3. The game was re-released a year or so later with patches, updates etc, and had 2 more episodes. The final level is 'Field of judgement', episode 5 level 8, and has a number of Minotaurs for a big finish. 5* for a great game none the less.
Look for the re-release as 'Heretic -- Shadow of the Serpent Riders'

it allows for 3D models... there is a 3D modelpack out for it, search for "jhrp" (jHeretic Resource Pack)
Newer, better models are in the works, though :)

boy i was wrong, the 1st episode was so hard and annoying, i hated it. but the 2nd episode so far is much more fun, the game is fun and all but that 1 episode annoyed me.

update your version to version 1.3. I think it should add the last 2 additional episodes in. The version you got was probably the version that only be received via mail order, while those who payed like $10 in the store got only the first episode back in the day.

i consider myself lucky man for having this gem of a game in its original box (the datadisc one, shaped like a book with a big skull on its front). Really loved this game when i was young. still today it has somehow wicked and evil atmosphere that no other game can best. And whats really great about it and also very underrated is the soundtrack. It just sounds so wickedly wicked its unbelievable . I always thought that if they made black metal without guitars it would end up sounding like this.

heretic is best run on latest gzdoom; he may have used fraps but its not free - the shareware version records games up to 60 secs i think, and is watermarked. you need to google some more if you want a free retail copy of fraps.
And yes, fraps is sh!tloads better than gamecam

similar thing happened here. I saw what I used to think was a helmet thing. I said Ooooo me wants. Then I get it to find it is a new weapon, the dragon claw. I fire it out and I was so into that weapon and firing at nothing, then I say let's go. I can't move, and blood was spewing out. I was like help... I'm stuck... Then I died.
I still didn't realize that I got crushed back then, until I got a few years older, and saw that the ceiling actually came down.

This isn't the last episode. The last episode is episode 5. True you kill D'Spiral, however the other 2 episodes take place during the time you get lost for along time up until heretic 2.
