Also there are more hyenas in africa than any other carnivore. Hyenas are fascinating animals.

A large male leopard can possibly kill a small male hyena but against a princess or a matriach it's almost even.. I;ve seen a matriach fighting a huge male lion and managed to escape and bit the lion on the mouth. Another male lion caught and killed her.

Hyena are as succesful as they are for the simple reason that they work well in great numbers, in social packs hyena are formidable. Similar to wolves or wild dogs. But as a single creature, they do not have even half of the shear power, weaponry or cunning that a leopard has. Leopards pound for pound are the second strongest big cats pound for pound in the world.
