Very good video. I'm impressed with your compassion for less fortunate countries. I really like your two bucket design. May I make one suggestion? I would substitute burlap fabric for the black plastic covers. Burlap will still suppress weeds, yet allow the soil to breath (which is important for healthy soil life). The light colored material will also keep soil cooler than the black plastic. Free burlap sacks can to obtained at feed mills or coffee shops.
Were trying these earth boxes. We found out putting a bucket from Lowes in a bucket from Walmart gives us 5 inches of water in the bottom. We like your cup method of slits we are trying this. We purchased Patio plus from Lowes it has compost seaweed, chicken and bat poop. I added worm castings and some worms to the bucket as a test. I will see what happens. I did not put any commercial fertilizer in the bucket.
I only hope my young girls can grow up and be as thoughful and intelligent as you guys are.
Today in my email inbox I got yet another letter describing why we should do nothing and just let things be. It's guys like you and the guy who started the ShelterBox campaign that give me hope that everyone is not a selfish baboon looking out only for her/himself.
Thanks guys - keep it up. We can change the world.
Also, if you have your buckets separate, how much do you wanter them? Then I would assume you place the pipe in before the soil and cut a hole for that also?
@sammyfan77 Dolomite is added for the Calcium, and to help regulate PH a bit, mostly used for tomatoes, to prevent blossom end rot.
I have just planted an earth bucket with a tomoto plant, I didnt use Dolomite, and I do not know if I will have a problem with BER. I am in the tropics, and I cant find Dolomite for sale anywhere, so I made my own mix, using coconut coir, regular garden soil, and worm castings. fingers are crossed lol
@gilgamesh1962 -You can add calcium by adding cleaned egg shells to the water, or crush them and add them to the soil. Or, if animals aren't a problem, crush clean bones and add them to the soil.
Way to go guys! Most excellent! I live in the US Virgin Islands. It's fairly arid and your system is off the wall. Way Cool! I will share the food I grow! Very inspiring! Keep it going!
teachers + students always learn from the wise , confucious we can believe his teachings are still here as for your bucket system (at this moment one is made here in Australia thanks again to you Two gentlemen, tomatoes doing well 3 are growing so far wow!) this is also a great water conserver . hope this reaches more listeners and doer,s.. keep doing guys thanks once again for reminding me about this product /..bucket system....all the many best wishes for today and the future..ciao...claudio.
top idea, keep this project going, a wise man once said "give a man a fish and you feed him for one day, teach him to fish and you feed him for life" could have been Jesus saying but not sure, anyway you two young guys are inspiring and very kind to teach the people out there , thank you....
Again, great job! I also made lots of other kinds of planters or boxes. One minor problems with the buckets: one of my tomatos got SO big, it actually got top heavy and fell over. No biggie, I just bungie corded the waterer to a tree.
Also, IF you make the waterer very tall, you can "stake" your tomato to it. I just slid a bamboo into my waterer pipe. can you say Gazpachio!?
The automatic watering system is working great. After we set it up, we've only spent about 5 minutes on watering during the past month. We're making a video to explain it, but we're leaving for a family vacation so it may not be finished for several weeks.
Really enjoyed this video...Thanks!

Thanks for the tips. I just ordered 120 buckets.
I have to get ready for a potential Global Economic Collapse.
Robert Kiyosaki says to have the 5 G's ready for it.
What I'll need next is a solar desalinization system.

At the end of the growing season, do you throw out the potting mix? Or do you
reuse next year by adding more fertilzer?

What is the Dolomite for and how is it added to the potting soil? What type of fertilizer is put on the top of the soil? Thanks for your help!
