the ballads are some of the best music during the last few years of his time here. That and the jam into drums/space and the longer jams out of it. I never skipped out on drums/space that I can recall BR break usually post drums after the ballad or show. Miss em all.
Just wanna shout out to all you heads. Grew up in SF and had the honor to see the Dead around 200 shows. From SF to NY and most points in between. Berkley, Springfield, Red Rocks, Santa Fe, Apline Valley, umm, and some other places. What incredible good fortune. I wouldn't trade those shows for twice as many brains cells back.
i,m gonna have to agree w/@abc. in his voice & music, there are no words to describe how & what the voice & music can bring to your soul& the life you will live. Long Live Jerry. Much love Always.
It is weird to say being young, but how can I miss Jerry if I was only a few years old when he died. Yet he has appealed to a new generation. That says a lot about the Dead and Jerry Garcia.
@bobbypeek2 I feel the same way man, and I'm sure plenty of other younger ppl do. I love this man as much as I love my relatives and friends. The gift of his music will last forever and we will be the ones to continue the legacy, years from now.
Being 18 years old....discovering the Grateful Dead was definitely life changing. It's hard to explain, but the Dead really have become an ever constant soundtrack around my life. Whether it's flying down a back country road, hanging with old time buddies, or stargazing on a warm summer night. The music just speaks volumes.
Does anybody but me get sick of heads bashing the later years? It seems like some of the people calling themselves deadheads these days purely care about the music and not the man. I'd loved to have been at this show or any show with Jerry Garcia.
@TNAisWWEv2 man why u gettin so hostile..folks r just expressing their feelins, why do u need to be that way.?.? Chill,if ya don't like the music or this Band, don't listen,if you would open up,get real,u might have a chance...Karma..it's real..
@abc you have no idea who he really is brotha it's very sad to see you have no idea of a man that words can not really describe he fills our souls everytime we hear him so hes always with us everywhere we go those of us that tuly know him will always be with him. He is a grate man alll my love to Jerry hugggsss to all :)
Comment for the clown that said Jerry can't solo. If you even knew about the Dead those words wouldn't of even been thought. I've heard Clapton rip so hard, you would of thought his guitar was going to explode BUT... Jerry makes your heart shine when he plays. & Yes... He can shred when he wants. Jerry plays for the love of his style. Open your mind & give it a shot & you just might get it.
@MsDancingbears So you don't like the albums because the band whould have rather been giging? follower. Those albums are awesome! I like the albums better than most live recordings I have. They may not have prefered the studio, but they sure as hell did kill it when they went into one. Maybe you need to listen to Anthem again, or maybe for the first time??
some of the greatest music ever played...the world is empty wthout jerry, jimmy, and janis....rip and keep on rockin on the other side.my dad came to join ya 3 weeks ago this past fri...rip pops i miss ya and love ya...ill see ya one day again and what a celebration itll be....
I'll bet when those guys you mentioned played live they sounded just like their albums. Jerry was always improvisational. He played with his soul. That is why sometimes it did not seem clean. If it did, I would have been suspect. Hate commercialism.
@Jerryg14 If you HATE commercialism why are you on youtube? Youtube is owned by a company that sells stock at $600 a share. The whole world is commercial, get over yourself you're not that cool.
@smithbt84 - Smithie my fiend, you just don't get it. Jerry and the boys never made a dime off of You Tube. Jerry once alluded to the fact that when the Dead were finished with their music (their live shows), we can have it. That is why they allowed taping at their shows. I have never paid a dime for being able to watch this wonderful video.
I used to listen to the GD exclusivity and tried to emulate Jerry's unique guitar style... but then I started listening to folks like Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Django Reinhardt, ETC.. and now I can't listen to a Jerry solo without thinking, "Jeez, was he always making this many mistakes?"
@TheCoughlm Yeah, Jerry made a lot of mistakes. A lot actually. He had his moments both good and bad like everyone else including Wes and Joe and the other guys. It is a little foolish to be under the impression that guys (like them) didn't make many mistakes. One of the things that separates the Dead from the rest in the honesty. These guys played 2,000+ shows and are confident enough to release both the good and bad, while Guys like Wes would not dare of releasing a lesser night.
Now you see Jerry's guitar pick (@ 3:17). Now you don't (@ 3:19). He used to slip it between his middle finger stump and palm, and hold it there. The camera angle changes here @ 3:18, so the switch is a little obscure, but such a delight to watch.

Ya know, I saw the boys 152 times over the couese of 11 years till the end..Summer of 95 and I have heard for years how I never saw "The Years"...ya know, 68m to maybe 78....and I know I didn't but I did see my first show in 84 and I just gotta say...If this is the way I remember Jerry...than I'm just fuckin fine with that....ABSOLUTLY BEAUTIFUL....
Helms, this is a great song, band, person, show etc. You've gotta find something better to do than talk shit on videos that you don't even like. @orlandogreen...at this time Jerry wasn't on top of his game thats why this song was such a blessing.... just do some thinking before typing... one love
My mom was a dead head, she passed away last may of lung cancer, and last year and this year we have had a celebration in her name, this song is always played when we release balloons with messages to her. Helps me get through rough times, great song
@bhogoz Of course we don't know each other, but I wanted to tell you how sorry I am about your mom's passing.
My folks died along time ago from various forms of cancer. You can't help but feel the emotions in this song, especially the way The dead played it that night. This is song has such a beatiful bitter-sweet spirit. it helps to keep the heart open. Peace to you
@bhogoz I wanted to echo what nicktidyman said. I am so sorry you are going through this sad time. My dad died right after Christmnas last year, and it is rough. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Today is Sunday and once again, big brother from the Excelsior District, took me to church. My tears prove that you were among the many kind souls who helped me realize I had one too. Like you and Them, I too try to pass it along when I get a hit of something good, and when I forget or get a tad greedy, somehow a gentle reminder finds me. From my Heart, Thank All of You!
AMAZING video...Best rendention of Peggy O...Bar none !!!! Jerry, you left many treasures for us to enjoy eternally....You opened the gates to many roads that lead to infinity , feeding our minds, hearts and souls...R I P Comrade as those who travel these roads are always with you in mind and spirit !!
Nothing better then watching Garcia get so lost in a jam that instead of missing a verse he gives us a second. Gems like this were sadly to far and in between as we headed toward the end of an era. I am blessed and a better person to be lucky enough to have been a part of it.
@Orlandogreen99 to sing properly? the singing is fucking glorious minus a few flubs, but who cares? The encapsulating beauty of this all the way around is astounding and can't be any more genuine. The criticism is fucking unbelievable.

Saw The Dead many times in 70's and 80's. My name is Peggy O'Neill thus Peggy O. Always wanted to think he maybe wrote about me as I met him many years ago!!!
.. this is perfect music - but in Siegburg Germnay is a bad and terrible incarnation of this pritty peggy O. - What a shame for this beautiful song - this person just took the name Peggy O. -

Thanks Jer. You and the Grateful Dead helped me along a path that I'm so glad I followed. You shaped me into being the person I am today. 16 years.....wow...
Sorry I'm 2 days late (I've been sick) w/ this but "Happy 69th BD" Jerry. Listening to this brings tears & so many great memories. I miss you. 12:57 am Aug. 3 2011
My life has been a dark hole lately, and this morning I heard Jerry belting it out on the radio, it was that moment I realized that the light was shining and it was Jerry that was missing in my life...amazing how a little Jerry can brighten a darken world
Happy birthday Jerry and thanks for sharing this video it has become one of my all time favorites I am proably around 20,000 of your veiws on this one!
Only Jerry knows what it felt like when all eyes turned to him on these solos...truly amazing!! He moved us for all those years and even in death he still moves us to another place..Thank you!!!
