Its the type of choise that is not just a randow chair... someone chooses that chair for beeing a classic. I'm amazed when I see videos that people chooses objects that are really important in the history of design because that way you know that whoever chooses that, knows what is he is talking about. I think though, that this man whose beloved is deteriorating, and is trying to remember her for what she was, and is trying by his playing of music and reading to her, is showing our need to hold on to what's temporal. The anticlimactic event of her waking (then moving on) when he has retrieved the needed compound for her continued stasis (when he has little fuel) seems like a lesson, that we shouldn't waste our resources on those who aren't coming back.
@Incognonymous I love this explanation. Furthermore supporting your hypothesis is the fact that he is surrounded by antiquity to the point of being outdated/obsolete. That shows another effect holding on to the past can have.
What if God made physics chemistry biology. What if its like when we thought the earth was flat. What if ones we knew it all, that the earth was round, all the things we are now trying to educated our self with today we knew. But some things happen, that blew us back to living in caves? What if, it was God? Not having faith isn't his problem. Its ours. Faith in our selves our mate our kids. To work so hard to show something isnt real seems odd.

We have a microscopically narrow understanding of reality because the human understanding of reality is roughly based on the entwining of illogical emotions and the odds for or against something existing or occuring, with math being the only subject with which we can use to prove things generally exist or occur at a high probability. There is no mathmatical formula or scientific law disproving the existence of a creator so a creator is as much of a reality to some as a falicy to others
