bluddy hell,,, sat in the picadilly gardens,, thinking here we go again,, dropping the bombers,,, this tune always brings back that memory of the Wheel all nighter and the Top Twenty in Failsworth for the all dayer in the morning after,,, shit we needed the bombers.!!!!!!
about 4 years ago my cousin wife brother started playing some 70s music, when he put this on i cried who sang this,he told me.i was transported back 30 years and in that time for the love of me, it was the song i searched for and finally it had arrived.......FANTASTIC!!
I can remember the 60s soul scene in the North of England before 'Northern Soul'. It was a 'mod' thing. Blackpool 'Mecca', Manchester 'Twisted Wheel', youth club discos all over the place, juke boxes in our favourite cafes. The music was fantastic.
As one who regulary went to Wigan Casino & long before the all nighters, I cant see why Wigan was the "death" of northern soul. In the late 60's & early 70's the Casino was the only place to be! Ive been to Blackpool & Manchester, but WIGAN was THE best, & yes, at 57 i'm probably an old git!! But the music, the atmosphere was magic. Wonderful memories!!!!
Now heres a fantastic dancer from when soul was a terrific music to enjoy a sensational sound an everyday classic dancer and an all time favourite of mine.can play this 100 times a day and still dance to it brill Pat Allen burnley
ARCHIE BELL'S BROTHER JERRY BELL USE TO SING WITH THE NEW BIRTH AND THE DAZZ BAND! HE NOW HAS A CD OUT WITH ONE OF THE HIT SONGS FROM NEW BIRTH CALLED IT'S BEEN SUCH A LONG TIME!!! IT'S A MOTHER! THIS MAN IS BADDDDDDDD! HE IS ALSO ON UTUBE. I TELL YOU ,YOU SHOULD LOOK FOR HIM!!! GREAT RE-MAKE!!
keep the faith people omg i wanna time machine to take me back to the sweat the fun the atmosphere the frieds i made the love the power of this music it made my teens what they should have been FUN!!!!!
Chatted to these guys at the foot of the stairs in the Grand Hotel in Wigan where they stayed when they did the Casino. They were on the look out for chicks............. This was also the first record that I ever bought. What a cool groove.
I bought this '45, from Keith Rylett, nearly 30 years ago; it's sheer brilliance, a wonderful example of the Philadelphia sound.; all these years later, it's still one fo my favourite NS tracks; KTF!!
First time I've heard this. I like it. BTW: Has anyone heard any of Archie Bell's Country & Western recordings ? I know he has recorded a couple and he does have an affection for that music as well as the obvious.
god bless america, not for anything other than sixties soul singers.and uk dj's sifting through record vaults for quality soul that became legendary on the seventies northern soul scene.A lot of little known soul acts earned good money singing live at northern soul venues, and apreciated and loved the adulation they recieved from the packed dancefloors.
@jnmklo9 not just skinheads, all us shine boys in manny /pool/ cardiff were hitting our city's to this, shame a lot of skinheads were cool ,as usual small numbers ,small minded big noise
OMG this is brilliant, Keep the faith, world wide, we have the soul brothers and sisters to thank for this AMAZING MUSIC, which also inspired the King, EP, this is TOTALLY classic X
You (and others here) seem to think that because this music was popular in a certain northern region of the UK, that makes it UK music. It's American soul music, pure and simple; they listened to it in Canada too, but that doesn't make it Canadian Soul. Northern Soul was a cultural thing, one that happened to involve a lot of American soul music. Looks like it must have been great fun. But when it comes to the music, please give credit where credit was due - to the American soul artists.
Well done -you're a mind reader - funnily enough we know where the artists came from just amused by the average Americans lack of knowledge of any culture other than their own
I was just trying to correct the suggestions that the music on display here was "nothing to do with anywhere in the USA". I'm not a mind reader, just an average American (who's actually been to Wigan) and who recognizes that the Northern Soul movement was an amazing cultural happening, and the American soul music it embraced was also an amazing cultural happening. I wish I had been there, and envy those of you who were. That's all, no malice intended.
None taken Brother -- It was a FANTASTIC time and scene to be involved in. The music was all American, but was never recognised. It was the Brits who saw it for what it was :D
@lemmetry481 I am sorry mate but Wigan was the death of the Northern Soul Music scene, The Wheel, Catacombs, Blackpool Mecca, The torch... this is where the movement was born and Wigan was where it was ruined. Rambo Ramsden
lemmetry481 - your wrong, so wrong, no way do we think it is UK music. It only got the name because the music played in the Soul Clubs in the North of England was mainly 60's Detroit & Chicago based - think it was jounalist Dave Godin that created the name. It's not our fault we embraced it so much - it just happened - naturally. We didn't understand why you didn't feel the same about your own "home grown" music.
just so you are enlightened, Northern soul is connected to the UK, THE NORTHERN PARTS, not the USA.. Kepp the Faith... check wigan casino.. learn a thing or two.. peace.
I absolutely loved this record, one the many to come later on ,under the northern banner.Keep the faith.I wonder if people in the states ever realised how huge soul music was in the U K in 60s and 70s.

Ah, well then they moved it to Peacock way, just off the market. We all used to pile in Wednesday lunchtime to get something to wear that night. Those were the days.
i remember the sturtridge pavilion holy crap now i got goose bumps. we probably know a lot of the same people. grew up in the eastern district holla at me
