@jabmalassie so why the hell hoarder? so, i think a jacky has to be in a little group. 2 dogs are the normal way. we have a stable, so our dogs are all time outside and playing like hell or come with us riding. only one jacky is not a good choice. friends of us use them for hunting. is this extreme hoarding?
I've been able to teach my jack/rat terrier almost everything I've set out to do except roll over..he just refuses to do it. It gets a bit frustrating when he picked up spin, stand, and shake all within about 15 minutes..but roll over I've tried for weeks..

can these dogs be trusted out site, like when taking thm for a walk do you have to tie em up? would they just take off and run away or would thy come back!!!!

The most important command to train is 'come' which is the return command, when you can reliably get your dog to come back to you in all situations, being off-leash is not a problem. Be warned though, it takes quite a long time for JRT's to return reliably, being as stubborn as they are. Trciks are easy to teach if you are able to explain to your dog what behaviour you want. JRT's catch on very fast...
@kellyroy10 patience and consistency are key. I would definitely work on teaching him to come first. If you could only choose one trick for your dog to know that is the most important one. It helps to find what motivates him the most, affection, play, or treats. The more you can make it fun the better and do a little at a time each day so that you don't bore or frustrate him.

OMG I just want to reach into the screen scoop him up and just hold him!!! My dog was exactly like this. Her name was Lucy. But she died because some stupid ass hole "accidently" ran over her with his motorcycle. I heard the yelp and everything. I still cry about her. This is such an ADORABLE DOG!! :'( Reminds me of my Lucy.
Fantastic hunting Animal. I hate to see them doing tricks for the humans. Put one of these dogs on a hunt and see what a top line predator they really are. No offense ment, they make good pets. Bring a couple of these dogs into their natural habitat in the country and see what a hunter you really have in your house. Very SMART Dog! I Luv Dem!!
@itsmefergal i agree but(i have one called finn), they make good pets cuz of their adaptability to different lifestyles. as long as they have a firm trainer and a loving family with a good amout of exerscise, then they thrive in any enviroment. they are deffinately top preditors tho:L.

One way I got my JRT to obey me without treats... put your car in the garage... open both drivers door and passenger door.
Let him sit in the car with you when you clean the dashboard and windows... queitly and softly whisper to him (her)... make it seem like they are helping you...
go out one door, move to the other side and end the process and both of leave. Then next time you want them to obey you, pull them aside quietly and whisper in their ear like you did before and they will respond!

you got to be very good at dog training to get them this trained even then it takes along time. mines getting better but its taken me a year and still have along way to go. I'v come to know that its just as much me understanding her as it is her understanding me, best advice I ever had in leaning to get alone with my dog
i think this is a docked tail, it would be longer if it wasn't i work at a JRT breeders and if it the puppies tail is docked correctly it sould only have a third of the tail taken off
I KNOW! My dog had his tail docked too. I thought they were like that when I first got him, but then I started looking up videos and I found they had long tails!

It's easy, as jack russells are very bright, the hard part is working out how to communicate what you want your dog to do.... My JRT gets frustrated with me when he doesn't get what I'm asking him to do... Hahaha, he's probably thinking "What dumbass trick is he trying to teach me now ? I've had a JRT for a few months now. His name is Charlie, he's awesome but can be very, very naughty XD. It's like he refuses to let us know when he has to go to the bathroom. He's wrecked 2 of our rugs but, we still love him. And he is very short, people mistake him for a Dachsund. It's because his mother had stubby legs, but his father was normal size.

all JRT are born with a tail. In my country it is forbitten to dock them. You may dock them if you are a hunter (need papers for that) but otherwise it is forbidden.
after a VERY long time persuading my parents to get a dog,my mum wants a jack russel but we need a dog that wont bark when we are all out and it is on its own. i also love jack russels but im not shore that this dog will bark ...do jack russels bark wen u r out of the house??
lol i recommend if you dont want a dog that barks, dont get a JR , they bark up a storm at ANYTHING!! lol, you could get a basenji ,they dont bark at all, and theyre really similar to JRs too :)
Every dog can be as you want it to be with some good positive training, i hate those general rules like "yes they bark" and "not they sit quietly". I have a JRT and he's never barked while on his own. Nevertheless, they are idd a LOT more energetic than other dogs and it's definitely not a dog which can be a mere doll in the house, so i'd recommend not to take it if u have a mom who does not want "this" or "that" done in the house, coz they are VERY demanding dogs.
The key to having a dog that doesn't bark comes down to three issues.
1. Don't buy a highly strung breed of dog.
2. Training. Don't smother a puppy with affection, then suddenly leave it. Show the puppy that the owner will come back. Alot of the time the barking can be due to separation anxiety.
3. Dogs need stimulation. Provide the puppy with toys that can distract and stimulate his energy. If a dogs only stimulation is that of people walking by, then of course the dog will bark at anyone.
My Jack Russel doesn't bark much but mine chews anything he can get his little teeth on! It's not very cool when u go to put your shoes on and they're all chewed up. Also, mine is quite jealous and does not do quite well with my other dog, but he is so cute when he is calm! I still love him!!
first of all it is a matter of training. Start with 3 minutes leaving the room and train him until he can stay longer alone.
But JRT are bred to bark. They have not only to lure the fox out of its cave but also to find wounded deer and show the hunter with barking where to find it. The barking also serves to make the wounded deer stay where it is. So JRT of course still tend to bark more than other dogs.
You must have the patience of a saint - my Jack will beg and sit providing I have food - other than that HE WON'T DO NOTHING FOR NO-ONE LOL! Great Video! 10/10
I have one of the "shorty" Jacks. Those dogs will ride anything. Mine rides the bicycle, motorcycle, riding mower, car, motherhome, horse.... it doesn't matter. Those dogs had to have been bred to be transported in or on something. Never seen anything like that breed of dog. And, don't exercise them trying to wear out their energy... you end up with a super-conditioned JRT that is even more rowdy.
My dog and do most of those tricks as we are finishing up puppy school. But I really want to know how to get my puppy to do the roll over. Can you advise how you taughter Mickey?

If thats how you feel why go to terrier videos, there is alot of videos that dont have them, you seem like a pitbull lover go get bitten.terriers are better then other breed HATER:)
This makes me really miss my jacks russell terrier, I had her as a small kid back in '92 and she was only a year old then. She passed away in her sleep of old age a little bit more than a year ago and lived a full happy life...the best way to go.

after a VERY long time persuading my parents to get a dog,my mum wants a jack russel but we need a dog that wont bark when we are all out and it is on its own. i also love jack russels but im not shore that this dog will bark ...do jack russels bark wen u r out of the house??

lol i recommend if you dont want a dog that barks, dont get a JR , they bark up a storm at ANYTHING!! lol, you could get a basenji ,they dont bark at all, and theyre really similar to JRs too :)

Every dog can be as you want it to be with some good positive training, i hate those general rules like "yes they bark" and "not they sit quietly". I have a JRT and he's never barked while on his own. Nevertheless, they are idd a LOT more energetic than other dogs and it's definitely not a dog which can be a mere doll in the house, so i'd recommend not to take it if u have a mom who does not want "this" or "that" done in the house, coz they are VERY demanding dogs.

The key to having a dog that doesn't bark comes down to three issues.
1. Don't buy a highly strung breed of dog.
2. Training. Don't smother a puppy with affection, then suddenly leave it. Show the puppy that the owner will come back. Alot of the time the barking can be due to separation anxiety.
3. Dogs need stimulation. Provide the puppy with toys that can distract and stimulate his energy. If a dogs only stimulation is that of people walking by, then of course the dog will bark at anyone.

My Jack Russel doesn't bark much but mine chews anything he can get his little teeth on! It's not very cool when u go to put your shoes on and they're all chewed up. Also, mine is quite jealous and does not do quite well with my other dog, but he is so cute when he is calm! I still love him!!

first of all it is a matter of training. Start with 3 minutes leaving the room and train him until he can stay longer alone.
But JRT are bred to bark. They have not only to lure the fox out of its cave but also to find wounded deer and show the hunter with barking where to find it. The barking also serves to make the wounded deer stay where it is. So JRT of course still tend to bark more than other dogs.

I have one of the "shorty" Jacks. Those dogs will ride anything. Mine rides the bicycle, motorcycle, riding mower, car, motherhome, horse.... it doesn't matter. Those dogs had to have been bred to be transported in or on something. Never seen anything like that breed of dog. And, don't exercise them trying to wear out their energy... you end up with a super-conditioned JRT that is even more rowdy.

This makes me really miss my jacks russell terrier, I had her as a small kid back in '92 and she was only a year old then. She passed away in her sleep of old age a little bit more than a year ago and lived a full happy life...the best way to go.
