Romeo starts it as American RPS, but adjusts to Daigo's Japanese Jankenpon style of play (in which they usually just throw their hand, rather than pounding it on the other palm). This is why Daigo seemed confused after the first round. But, yes, in Japan, this style of Jankenpon would be the functional equivalent of American RPS. They just play it a bit differently in Japan.

Think of it as regional rules :].
