The original song is about an Irish boy joining the British Navy and losing his legs, much to the remorse of his mother.
Bruce just changed the lyris a bit, but it works I think.

@TheMuseTime Mrs. McGrath is a fictional character, this song was a folk anti war song and anti military recruiting song out of Ireland in a time when the Irish were conscripted as cannon fodder for foreign armies.
