AT-AT's are cool. I went for broke a few yrs back & bought a limited edition Master Replicas AT-AT which was cast from the actual models used in the movies. It's sitting next to me right now in a big glass case. Everytime I look at it, it makes me feel like a kid again.
An at at has got to be the most useless thing ever,it's slow, and as far as I can tell,it only has the two guns on the front,Luke skywalker took one out by himself.
Yeah, the empire is not known for making good decisions, take new hope for instance, are we to believe that in that entire space station they call the death star, they can only muster up a measly 10 tie fighters to defend it?come on,they should of been able to send out at least 65.
That was some weaknes of Empire strategy- / AT-AT not use any of anti-airspace crafts weapons, any of airspace fighters (assault gunboat or TIE-AE,for example) did not apear to help walker-operators advancing to rebel-base and counter-attacking snow-speeders; in real battle, you can remember, King-tigers were not efective without air-support by luftwafe
I still don't see how this is an Imperial win. The Empire did not accomplish all of their objectives. Rebel high command still managed to escape and they wasted tremendous time and resources attacking a small starfighter base and then tracking ONE tramp freighter.
See all the rebels would of needed to do was get four or five guys to follow lukes lead, getting the at at from the bottom, then they could of saved countless lives.
@121badmofo While I could maybe concede that someone in the world could enjoy A New Hope more than this (it truly has it's moments)... Sith.. seriously, it's a massive let down. Watch more movies. Not to discredit your opinion, but only so you can see how much this movie did right. It did everything PERFECTLY. Compare the last 20 minutes of this film to any other in history. Only Dr. Strangelove is better.
I always loved this scene, but I never did get why the snowspeeder pilots kept charging straight down those big forward gun barrels of the AT-ATs instead of making their attack runs toward the unarmed rear quarters. The whole rebel defense was pretty puzzling from a military perspective, you have to admit. Should've just mounted the damn ion cannon on a mobile platform and used that on the AT-ATs instead.
@webboffin Really depends on a couple of things, if you think about it. Whether he hit legs first, the depth of the snow, the speed of his fall, etc. People have fallen from greater heights than that, and walked away.
Luke says the armour of the imperial walkers is too strong for blasters. 3:36 the walker is tripped up and falls and suddenly the imperial walkers armour is not strong enough for blasters just because it fell over.
@webboffin ...i dont think the snowspeeders blast caused it to blow up, most likely the explosion was the result of the damage it sustained when the walker fell...
This looks better than CGI will ever look. And this movie was before Star Wars was aimed at kids. "Imperial troops have entered the base!...Imperial troops have enter---."
@biggles1111 yeah....everybody hits lucas with the prequels... it is john williams fecking fault too with the new saga, lazy team overall...THIS WAS THE REAL john williams
@pedro6199782 the bullets hit the neck wich is voulnerable, but is normally protected by the head of the at-at, and its shield system, since the at-at fell down, its shields where deactivated from falling so hard, and the head was positioned to where it couldent protect the neck........and it was made in the 80's
They should've levelled that Ion Cannon and smoked those AT-AT's one by one but I'm sure there's a reason why they didn't. No Imperial Ground Assault maybe...
@osiud Also if I Remember in Star Wars Rogue Squadron III Rebel Strike there were Tie Fighters attacking the Transports in the later half of the Assault.
@osiud Yea but you have to remember the Rebels weren't at full strength during this battle. Most of their craft were being put up in the Transports. The real reason the Empire didn't have Air Support could also be because the Shield prevented the Empire from landing any craft or having any air support. That's the reason why General Veers was tasked with taking out the power generator so Darth Vader could land his shuttle. The ATATs landed somewhere outside the shield and simply walked in.
@osiud They didn't have UAVs back in the 80s or at the very least the concept wasn't known to the public....Plus I doubt the Empire even has something like that Besides why would they? They are orbiting the planet in Giant Space Wedges.
@osiud They didn't have UAVs back in the 80s or at the very least the concept was known to the public....Plus I doubt the Empire even has something like that Besides why would they? They are orbiting the planet in Giant Space Wedges.
That's a bit like comparing apples and oranges, but in my mind Empire Strikes Back is a timeless adventure with relatable characters. It still retains its appeal 30 years later its initial release. Nobody will remember The Dark Knight in 30 years, and it is already "yesterdays news" among the public in a day and age expensive comicbook movies are commonplace. Let's be honest here, if not for Ledger's death not even half would see it
Btw, this was a bigger commercial success back in 1980
There's a huge difference. The 1960's Batman show was intentionally campy and directed towards kids. In it there was a lot adult ambience and kinky jokes only adults understood. Like it or not the series more than tripled the sales of Batman comicbook and made DC realize their decision to kill off the character (due to bad sales of Batman comics) was a mistake.

@McLarenMercedes so you are saying, that 1960's Batman show is remembered because its sucks and Dark Knight wil lbe forgotten because it tries something new?
@McLarenMercedes There is one thing we can say about The Dark Knight - Christopher Nolan is a way better director than George Lucas. And Nolan won't be tinkering with his movies 30 years from now. He's smart enough to leave a good movie alone. And Dark Knight will be remembered.
Like the way Ghostbusters is remembered and revered today? A huge success back in 1984, in fact that year's biggest box office hit worldwide. Gave rise to a cartoon, comic books, action figures and an oftenly refered movie...among fans and those who saw it as a kid. For everybody else....it's as unknown as "Back to the future" is to teens today.
Hate to say this but "The Dark Knight" has annoyingly little "darkness" in it,and mostly takes place in a clean, sunny Chigaco. Wrong.
@McLarenMercedes Using Ghostbusters is a very poor example. I said "remembered." I never said Dark Knight would be hailed by a whole new generation of fans. That remains to be seen. Very few movies are loved by multiple generations. But Ghostbusters is definitely one that made that cut.
@92af ...you really cant compare those films against each other. When i watch a movie i decide if its good based on the movie itself not by comparing it to other movies. peace bro...
@osiud The planetary shield prevented orbital bombardment also it prevented ships without shields from penetratingthe shield. Only the big ships like the ATAT Barge could manage to penetrate.
@CassDaMan1138 That's debatable, ties are not aerodynamic, so they fly through the air with brute force. They also dont have rudders or ailerons, so they have to use their thrust to turn themselves, which isn't very effective. Same goes for X-wings, they weren't meant for atmospheric flight.
@chriscos123 Dude Dude... Real Life Physics =/= Star Wars Physics.
The Ties can fly in atmosphere just fine, though they do fly much better in Space in zero gravity in the Star Wars Universe, it's implied and shown in all of the Video games and comics. The most likely reason they don't have Tie Fighters in this battle is they would have to adapt the Fighters to the Cold Climate much like the Rebels had to adapt all of their ships or simply they felt they didn't need them.
@chriscos123 Continued- Opting for a more menancing Walker March to frighten the Rebels.
BTW using your logic Ships like the Millenium Falcon wouldn't be able to leave the ground let alone fly due to it's obvious un-aerodynamic shape and placement of Thruster blocks. Yet it can in Star Wars.
I'm gonna be such a idiot, but if they had any Y-Wings (bombers) in the base, couldn't they use those along with the showspeeders to attack the ATAT's?
Man,I love the tension as you see the Walkers approaching in the distance. This scene was inspire by the "Battle on The Ice" sequence from the Sergei Einsestein movie Alexander "Nevsky".
@osiud Due to budget constraints in the Imperial Market, we are unable to provide air support for your surface battle on Hoth. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please apologize to Darth Vader on our behalf. We will appreciate it.
Later on for some reason in EU sources they did. Which to me is like "Ok...All that effort and unnecessary wast of infantry and billions of credits worth of walkers collapse on their knees , they all of a sudden show up with a bunch of bombers and fighters?"
Funny how Legolas took out an Olliphant by himself and it just looked stupid and unbelievable but when Luke takes out a Walker by himself it kicks ass.
I don't know why they liked using educated British English for all the bad bastards, exception was Obi Wan Kenobi aka Alec Guiness! American accent always sounded cooler though to me.
the old stars movies looks so realistic and thats the reason why we love 'em so :D ♥ but the voice of Skywalker souds better in german, like all voices, really !!!! :D
Too bad they had not enough money for some stormtroppers on the ground and some more AT-ST scences. This way it looks like the rebel soilders try to stop the AT-ATs with their infantry-blasterrifles.
@ecural Out of all the things that they SHOULD have added when releasing the DVDs again.. are some shots of the infantry ground battle. For the longest time I thought all the Rebels were shooting the AT-ATs.
Enough with the prequel bashing! You hate them, fine! Instead of wasting your time bitching and moaning about them, celebrate the original trilogy instead!
THIS is Star Wars! the original three movies are some of the best sci-fi to ever come across a screen. The prequels will be remembered (at least in my mind) as a sad, self-absorbed attempt by Lucas to deliver a superficial expansion on the universe to rake in billions of dollars.
ESB has to be my favorite movie of the Star Wars movie series. I'm 20 years old and my dad grew me up on Star Wars and I still get goosebumps when I watch this opening snow battle. The whole goosebump part is when you cant see the ATAT's yet but when the base starts to shake and the ceiling starts to fall apart and you know something big is on its way. I want an atat for a car. I could get around Kansas City in the winter much easier.
Hey dudes I heard George he is gonna make da original trilogy but in da style of Avatar n with better actors, he is determnined to break avatars record n since he hates the stupid old looking trilogy anyway he is gonna redo it with cool 3D CGI, OMG its gonna be soooooooooo cool! RaSpex.

This is not an invasion. This is a Humanitarian Intervention.

@ebf526 They had a shield generator preventing an air bombardment retard!! GOSH! noob.
tubatk421 8 months ago
@tubatk421 I knew that. Apparently your Finance Department must have cut the budget on your sense of humor.

Later on for some reason in EU sources they did. Which to me is like "Ok...All that effort and unnecessary wast of infantry and billions of credits worth of walkers collapse on their knees , they all of a sudden show up with a bunch of bombers and fighters?"

I have to say I am a big Star Wars fan!!! This video is awesome!!!

Too bad they had not enough money for some stormtroppers on the ground and some more AT-ST scences. This way it looks like the rebel soilders try to stop the AT-ATs with their infantry-blasterrifles.
ecural 1 year ago
@ecural Out of all the things that they SHOULD have added when releasing the DVDs again.. are some shots of the infantry ground battle. For the longest time I thought all the Rebels were shooting the AT-ATs.

Enough with the prequel bashing! You hate them, fine! Instead of wasting your time bitching and moaning about them, celebrate the original trilogy instead!
pyrogyra72 1 year ago
