@BenKHouch Rugby is only the national sport because we stand a chance in it. Cardiff City football get around 20,000 fans, and they are in the championship (second division). Swansea City football get around 17,000, and they are also in the championship. Wrexham football get around 4,000 and they aren't professional. The four main Welsh rugby teams don't get that much attendance, the Dragons about 4,000, the Scarlets around 6,000, the Blues around 8,000 and the Ospreys around 9,000.

Even in NZ where it is rugby mad, the Wellington Phoenix made the semi finals and get 30-40,000 for 2 games in a row,and thats more than any Rugby game played this year!

I'm not an afficionado as you can tell you could be right for all I know. But I think it's difficult for the judges to decide who wins this award . You have to take into account that the players with the best teams are going to get more opportunities to play, attack and make an impression.

McCaws 09 season wasnt that great, the guy was repeatedly out-played by Heinrich Brussow, and his team didnt beat the South Africans once? Something which funnily enough, Brian O'Driscoll did lead his team to do, as well as playing a key role in winning a Grandslam and going through 09 season undefeated and playing superbly alongside Roberts in the Lions Tour. Both BOD and Du Preez had fantastic seasons as individual players, so doesnt make that much sense to give it to McCaw. Nice dig at SW too

harsh on Parrisee, the guy is one of the best no.8s around atm, along with Harinordoqui and Lobbe, and yes I'd say he's a better no.8 than Collins, especially on recent form (I see a lot of Collins now he's at the Ospreys, he's been good but not the same as he was back with NZ - partly because the O's pack has been on the back foot without Adam Jones) and imo Muliania was one of the best fullbacks in 08 (still is) but you seem to forget that Byrne and at least later on, Kearney were fantastic

I fully agree that Muliania was one of the best players on the pitch most of the time, but to say Shane Williams wasnt in his games is rubbish. Nearest thing to a bad game was the England game at Twickers, and he still showed sparks of brilliance. @BenKHouch Rugby is only the national sport because we stand a chance in it. Cardiff City football get around 20,000 fans, and they are in the championship (second division). Swansea City football get around 17,000, and they are also in the championship. Wrexham football get around 4,000 and they aren't professional. The four main Welsh rugby teams don't get that much attendance, the Dragons about 4,000, the Scarlets around 6,000, the Blues around 8,000 and the Ospreys around 9,000.

Ultimately, they judge the player on his individual skills and achievements not on what team he plays for although that will have some relevance. You know that SH teams are constantly playing against the weaker NH teams and in 2008 I'm not aware of any SH players who outshone SW in these matches I don't know about the tri nations. I watched the Rupeni tribute and who can deny that he's a great winger one of the best - totally amazing. BUT I think you've overlooked a major point - in sport and other walks of life to be remembered and to be great you need to be uniquely individual, stand out from the crowd, you need your own signatory style. McCaws 09 season wasnt that great, the guy was repeatedly out-played by Heinrich Brussow, and his team didnt beat the South Africans once? Something which funnily enough, Brian O'Driscoll did lead his team to do, as well as playing a key role in winning a Grandslam and going through 09 season undefeated and playing superbly alongside Roberts in the Lions Tour. Both BOD and Du Preez had fantastic seasons as individual players, so doesnt make that much sense to give it to McCaw. Nice dig at SW too

BOD winning grand slam means nothing for me...when ireland,wales etc beat SH teams on a REGULAR basis HOME AND AWAY..-which means (75% wins at home, 30-40% WINS AWAY IN SH) thats when ill take them seriously...in general NH teams win 1/3 games vs SH teams at home (33%)...and lucky to win 10-20% of their games away in the SH...thats pretty poor %s for a guy from the north to argue NH is as good as the SH..whether we are talking club level...international level...or individually

I see your point about the IRB, but Shane did deserve that award. It doesnt really matter who your opposition is tbh (I cant really be arsed to get into a my hemispheres > your hemisphere arguement) or which team you play for, you deserve it if you play superbly as an individual, which Shane Williams did. I agree that Muliania is class, but imo he didnt have as stand out a season as Shane Williams in 08. Thats why Parisse got nominated - he was playing fantastic despite being ina terrible team.

did u watch all the nz games in 08 to see how Muliana played?...cause i watched the 2 sa test matches and a couple of 6n games and a few of his european club games...compared to mulianas waikato chiefs/tri nations and european tour matches...dont get me wrong SW was sublime...but Mils outplayed EVERY #15...and was within the top 3-5 players on the pitch of EVERY GAME he played if he wasnt man of the match...can u say the same thing about SW in 08?...NOPE

harsh on Parrisee, the guy is one of the best no.8s around atm, along with Harinordoqui and Lobbe, and yes I'd say he's a better no.8 than Collins, especially on recent form (I see a lot of Collins now he's at the Ospreys, he's been good but not the same as he was back with NZ - partly because the O's pack has been on the back foot without Adam Jones) and imo Muliania was one of the best fullbacks in 08 (still is) but you seem to forget that Byrne and at least later on, Kearney were fantastic

yes I did see a few of NZ games or at least the highlights. I fully agree that Muliania was one of the best players on the pitch most of the time, but to say Shane Williams wasnt in his games is rubbish. Nearest thing to a bad game was the England game at Twickers, and he still showed sparks of brilliance. He outplayed the Scots (2 great tries) cut apart the Italians (2 Tries) won the game in Ireland with a try from nothing and outplayed Vincent Clerc in the grandslam game (1 try from nothing)

a World Class player is someone who plays well the MAJORITY of their games...the team leader...a game breaker vs ANY opposition REGARDLESS of who the opponent is...too often than not SW is found wanting vs quality teams...not once has he played decent in the southern hemisphere...a decent player plays well at and away from home...not 50% of the time when hes at home

i do see where u r coming from but the point was made at the time that shane did really well in influencing games and he is a winger, whereas a flanker (McCaw) or flyhalf (Carter) are naturally goin to be more involved so it would be easier to influence...but it would be harder for a winger so the fact he did so many good things that year in the six nations and against south africa shows how much quality he has!! and u say u dont think he's crap...well u called him shit alot...anyway...

@ThGodLike You cant really compare these two players, jonah was like an extra centre/back row he was huge for a winger and smashed through pretty much anything in his path, whereas for shane that is pretty much impossible he uses side step wizardry to tie the opposition in knots, (no contact needed)...

There is no way Shane can be shit when he is third on the list for try scorers and you take into account the fact that he was in a Welsh team that was quite poor (to be kind) we had a brief surge in 2005 but then went crap again for a couple of years and also when Graham Henry was coach Shane wasn't picked just because of his size! Compare that to Joe Rococoko who is surrounded by world class All Blacks! I think its amazin Shane is 3rd and that just shows his class!

when top nations like SA/NZ and AU play lower ranked teams, their topend wingers (tryscorers) get RESTED and those nations play their B sides...imagine how many tries Rococoko, Cullen, Howlett, Tiquiri etc would have scored vs nations like Tonga,Fiji etc if they were playing...a minimum of 3 tries easy

The point i was trying to make numb nuts was Shane has played in an average Welsh team for the majority of his career..and look what he did to the all blacks in the 03 World Cup..Wales still lost yes but Shane still had a fuckin brilliant game!
