That behavior is predatory and the cat is trying to mimic bird chirping to confuse the bird it is watching. It is common for most cats. Cats will also swish their tails violently and rigidly as their body becomes tense.
This behavior is called "chirping". the only other cats I've seen do this are my Maine Coons. One male I had could actually catch Bluebirds & Cardinals, chirped them right out of the trees! Most domestics have had this trait bred out.
When me and my brother were little our mother picked us up from school and suprised us with 2 pet cats they were the funniest things mine was really fast and you could never pet it or hold it and my brothers was a fat and lazy one that got beat up by my fast one it was so funny...
I heard another Scottish Fold cat call out like this, so maybe the particular sound is uniquely Scottish Foldish. ^_^ Ah ha, cats love catching those birds!
@LisaJMoore Lisa this is something every cat do when spotting a prey. Proposed explanations for this behavior include that it is a threatening sound, an expression of excitement or frustration, or an attempt to replicate a bird-call. Recent animal behaviorists have theorized that it is a "rehearsal behaviour" in which the cat anticipates or practices the killing of prey, because the sound usually accompanies a biting movement similar to the one they use to kill their prey.
all cats will do this, and to me it is so sweet to see their enjoyment. I miss it from an older cat I had who is now gone. Wonderful. I've sent it to a new cat owner friend of mine who didn't know what I was talking about. good job and gorgeous cat.
Thank you for your comment! Cats bring such great joy to one's life. I hope you will consider giving a home to another well-deserving kitty in the future.
I do have a kitty. I have a Selkirk Rex who is such a sweet little girl. The one who passed 2 years ago, I think was Main Coon heritage, just a kitty we adopted years ago. He died too young from cancer. I'm mainly a dog person, but kitties have wiggled their way into mine and my dog's hearts.
That adorable bundle of joy!

I have never heard a cat really sound like this...is this a Scottish Fold thing?
My cat is a first class birder.....her kittens could jump SOOOO high as well....the birds didn't stand much of a chance.
