Even though he did take away everything the break-up was going to be a big void in her chest because she loved him so much and he loved her in return. When this happened I cried so bad because I know how it feels to have someone just leave and take everything with them.
It was a harsh time for me too, when Edward left her.. saying "you are not enough" ....a depressing moment, but his eyes were saying the contrary... he was just fighting his feelings... I cried as well... awful!!!

But no I don't think he was too harsh (preparing for attack) he wanted her to move on and didn't realize the extent of her love he doesn't even seem to realize this until spoiler breaking dawn in the end then he realizes how much she loves him. Like he says in the other books.... It was a big mistake to leave her.... but it had to happen otherwise the story wouldn't be what it is => Jake, love triangle (that's the best part isn't it?!^^)
1st off i pretty much closed my book and put it away for a while when i finished this chapter.2nd Edward did the WRONG thing. He never should have done that because it would hurt her WAY too much. He should have known that she would never forget him.duh. And to hide everything, well that was just REALLY mean. To hide all that wonderful music somewhere where she could never hear it again. honestly this book pissed my off because it was so depressing and had almost NO vampires in it the whole time

I did cry when Edward left, even when I've read the book before! I just thought that they belonged together. I wasn't expecting this kind of a twist! And when he comes back, I'm always so happy. I really didn't think he would leave her so soon, though. . . maybe in Eclipse? But Bella was right; the thing with Jasper was nothing. And I can't believe that Edward would take her photos and take her CD. I felt so bad, but then wondered; this still isn't going to prevent her from remembering him.
I hope that the new moon movie portrays the intense feelings felt in this chapter of the book well, we will all need to bring our tissues to the movie. My opinion about Edward leaving Bella is that he had the right intentions about leaving Bella but she was already so besoted by him that there was no way of a "clean break" as Edward had hoped. I have also always thought that the animal sounds are Sam Uley in wolf form searching for Bella. What do you think?
in a way i think that he had a good idea by leaving her because ever since he has came along bella has been closer and closer to death. If he loves her he'd do anything to keep her safe,including leaving her.

The breakup was really sad and yes I think Edward was a bit harsh. If he loved Bella and would do anything, I think he should of stayed to protect her, but he thought that leaving her was for the best and that everything that happened that she would forget it. She would still have the memories of him like her bite mark, but he did the worse thinking it was the best for them, and the best thinking it would be better for her.

Personally, New Moon is my favorite novel of the series because there's so much emotion, Stephanie Meyer captured Bella's feelings so perfectly in this book.
Edward leaves because he knows that their family will endangered Bella's but Bella doesn't believe that. I think it's kinda harsh and right at the same time. It's harsh cause he kept the last memory he has with Bella. It is right because if he doesn't keep those things Bella will have a hard time to move on. I guess it's better the way he have done it in the book because if a phone call break-up I think Bella will go insane because she knows she can't do anything and will not received a kiss
this is why new moon had become my least favorite int the whole series the break up was just way to heart ripping out sad. Edward should have let the rest of the family stay in forks instead of having them move away for what Jasper had done Bella really didn't need to go through a really bad breakup but you kind of know that it of would turn out better in the end or at least hop that it would. Edward was acting like a baby instead of staying with the woman he loved so much

i think that it had to happed for the book to get into everything(becaming friends with Jacob,hearing the voices) i did cry when edward left and i still do if you look at it in edward place he knew it was the right thing but he wasn't too harsh because her things were never gone but in my eyes i think it HAD to happed that way
Edward, was trying to be the good guy and by leaving he thought she would be safer! but they totally don't see how much the other cares and loves them. Its like they down play their love for eachother, It was so so so sad that he left. My thoughts when I first read the break-up:
I found it totally obvious,that Edward didn't really want to leave Bella&that he just did it"for her own good",that's only his view,of course!So I really couldn't understand when Bella later on thought,Edward woudn't want her anymore&had forgotten her and all that crap!I though:"Girl! Don't you see how hard it was for him to leave you?!"

actually, it's sort of a 50-50 answer. He left her, and that was sad. But he did it for her own good. So she wouldn't get hurt anymore. Besides, if he had never left, Bella would never have figured out that Jacob was a werewolf.
honestly i was in tears from the moment the chapter started that page in my copy is so tears stained i had to buy a new one :( but i think in edwards eyes he was doing the right thing and it wasnt too harsh taking the cd and pics coz she will find them under her floorboards :) x

this chapter totally made me cry ! But i do understand why edward was so harsh, he probably wanted her to hate him, so that she would forget about him. I feel more sorry for edward tho because he had to make the desision to leave her, and that would had been hard for him too.
I think that Edward should have told her how he felt the night it happened and just tried to figure out her feelings on the subject. He can't hear her thoughts so he might have thought it was for the best but I think he should have been more gentle. Also, in all his years he should have heard the quote: "With Distance the Heart Grows Fonder." meaning that if he dissapearred she would miss and love him more and so did he. He did the right thing though and that is how she becomes friends with Jake

I cried at the part while he was explaining that he was leaving. He didn't know it was going to hurt her, he wanted what was best, he truely believed she would be 'like any other human' and heal and move on, and have a better life without him. And he took all those things away because he said 'It will be as if I never existed'. So he stuck to his word on that part, although he never actually took them away, they were under her floorboards.
I totally think that hi is a masochistic buttwhole. Seriously, he killed her! She wasn't the same for months! And he knew this and still hurt her, probably knowing her reaction from Alice's visions. I think he should have stayed and let Bella live her life with him.
I think that Edward did the right thing to be harsh, because if any of you have read the books, you know that Bella is stubborn and wouldn't give up easily. He had to say he didn't love her and hurt her to make her belive it. I think that a phone break up would not be very Edward he is more of an old fashioned, in person kind of guy. Also he didn't really take the pictures and the CD...we discover later that he really just hid them under the floor boards. The break up seen was sad but very well written i have tear stains all over the pages of this part!
But for Bella its the opposite, she defines love as selfish, which is why in Eclipse she was telling Edward to fight for her after the whole Jacob thing [which I hated].
For me despite his wallowing and other lacking qualities, I still 'heart' Edward cos I share his definition when it comes to love and so I get why he did the things he did. I guess it all boils down to people's individual definition of love.
I think his only mistake was not realizing that Bella loves him just as selfishly as he loves her. She'd rather be with him despite the internal conflicts she knew he fought against, and he'd rather be with her despite her life in jeopardy.
If you've read Midnight Sun you would understand Edward a lot better; in his opinion love is selfless, thus he believed that if he loved her more he should leave her [or let her be pregnant with pups in Breaking Dawn].
I thought it was very heartbreaking and I think edward was being too harsh, this almost happened to me once and I felt the exact same pain bella felt. When I was first reading the book I did not expect edward to leave her, it made me want to skip through pages to see if he would come back.

Considering Edwards character, I imagine that he was tortured over it, and only did because he truly believed he had to to save not simply her life, but her very soul. There is a beauty in that, and a deep love that's needed.
As for Bella, she isn't simply losing a boyfriend, she's loosing her life, the life she believed she'd have with him. Its understandable she reacts as she does, and I think it's a needed part in the story to illustrate how deep their love is for one another.

This chapter broke my heart, so i can't imagine what bella must have been feeling. But no I don't think he was too harsh (preparing for attack) he wanted her to move on and didn't realize the extent of her love he doesn't even seem to realize this until spoiler breaking dawn in the end then he realizes how much she loves him. But I don't think a phone call would have sufficed it would be too crappy of him!

1st off i pretty much closed my book and put it away for a while when i finished this chapter.2nd Edward did the WRONG thing. He never should have done that because it would hurt her WAY too much. He should have known that she would never forget him.duh. And to hide everything, well that was just REALLY mean. To hide all that wonderful music somewhere where she could never hear it again. honestly this book pissed my off because it was so depressing and had almost NO vampires in it the whole time

I did cry when Edward left, even when I've read the book before! I just thought that they belonged together. I wasn't expecting this kind of a twist! And when he comes back, I'm always so happy. I really didn't think he would leave her so soon, though. . . maybe in Eclipse? But Bella was right; the thing with Jasper was nothing. And I can't believe that Edward would take her photos and take her CD. I felt so bad, but then wondered; this still isn't going to prevent her from remembering him.

I hope that the new moon movie portrays the intense feelings felt in this chapter of the book well, we will all need to bring our tissues to the movie. My opinion about Edward leaving Bella is that he had the right intentions about leaving Bella but she was already so besoted by him that there was no way of a "clean break" as Edward had hoped. I have also always thought that the animal sounds are Sam Uley in wolf form searching for Bella. What do you think?

The breakup was really sad and yes I think Edward was a bit harsh. If he loved Bella and would do anything, I think he should of stayed to protect her, but he thought that leaving her was for the best and that everything that happened that she would forget it. She would still have the memories of him like her bite mark, but he did the worse thinking it was the best for them, and the best thinking it would be better for her.

actually, it's sort of a 50-50 answer. He left her, and that was sad. But he did it for her own good. So she wouldn't get hurt anymore. Besides, if he had never left, Bella would never have figured out that Jacob was a werewolf.

I think that Edward should have told her how he felt the night it happened and just tried to figure out her feelings on the subject. He can't hear her thoughts so he might have thought it was for the best but I think he should have been more gentle. Also, in all his years he should have heard the quote: "With Distance the Heart Grows Fonder." meaning that if he dissapearred she would miss and love him more and so did he. He did the right thing though and that is how she becomes friends with Jake

I think that a phone break up would not be very Edward he is more of an old fashioned, in person kind of guy. Also he didn't really take the pictures and the CD...we discover later that he really just hid them under the floor boards. But for Bella its the opposite, she defines love as selfish, which is why in Eclipse she was telling Edward to fight for her after the whole Jacob thing [which I hated].
For me despite his wallowing and other lacking qualities, I still 'heart' Edward cos I share his definition when it comes to love and so I get why he did the things he did. I guess it all boils down to people's individual definition of love.

I think his only mistake was not realizing that Bella loves him just as selfishly as he loves her. She'd rather be with him despite the internal conflicts she knew he fought against, and he'd rather be with her despite her life in jeopardy.
If you've read Midnight Sun you would understand Edward a lot better; in his opinion love is selfless, thus he believed that if he loved her more he should leave her [or let her be pregnant with pups in Breaking Dawn].

Considering Edwards character, I imagine that he was tortured over it, and only did because he truly believed he had to to save not simply her life, but her very soul. There is a beauty in that, and a deep love that's needed.
As for Bella, she isn't simply losing a boyfriend, she's loosing her life, the life she believed she'd have with him. Its understandable she reacts as she does, and I think it's a needed part in the story to illustrate how deep their love is for one another.

Edward thought that he was doing the right thing for bella and that's all he ever wanted-for bella to be happy. but she had changed, she wasn't the bella that arived in forks, she was 'his' bella. and for him to so easily take her heart and soul and break them like that was wrong, she was in more danger with him gone.

i think the breakup was really sad. i do think he was a lil harsh to just leave her like that. i will however say at least he forwarded a note to charile saying she was in the woods. he didnt have to do that he could have left her out there. i do think he was harsh by taking her pictures and cd away but i can see that he wants to make sure she forgets him

I think that it was kind of mean for Edward just to leave her in the middle of the forest, he could have done it in a nicer way! And taking all her pictures and stuff...why? lol

i think it was a good thing in the end that he left, because it made thier relationship stronger, but at the time it was a bad thing to do because bella loved him soo much! x

i really think it wasnt harsh because all he wanted was a better life for her and everything i hear that he left her for her it makes me cry. Its just he loves her so much he wants the better for her even though it kills Him & Her.

If I were bella, I would get a rope and hang myself if this happened to me.
It's too harsh for edward to leave bella like that. but I know, that's what he thinks is the best for both of them.
anyway, the emotions on this chapter is just to heavy to bear.
