The point in the novel is that Pip's expectations lead to his distruction and that his want for Estella consumed him even though he could never have her. More thought provoking than another Hollywood, bland ending.

Also Estella is a metaphor for all the expectation and want... the wealth and hoi polloi. Estella can't return Pip's love and passion because Miss Havisham ruined her, which he never accepts. So the film managed to miss most of this in favour of a really dull end.

There is a hidden msg in this novel. Some girls will lead boys on because they enjoy the attention and adoration. They get a kind of sadistic pleasure from teasing the boy or man but never actually getting into a relationship with them! I experienced this myself! The thing to understand is that beauty is not just physical and you cannot just luv someone just cos they are stunning.
