t's ironic that while Karen and Olivia were best friends their lifes and careers were at the opposite ends of the spectrum in 1981. Livvy looked great, she and John Farrar were at their peak with classic Physical LP while Karen's health went downhill fast and while I like Made in America it was nowhere near the level of 70's Carpenters classics. Love both dearly but this video sadly illustrates my point.

Media attention? Her Mom? Her husband? Maybe all these things contributed to it, but I don't think that you can blame one person because Karen was taking the laxatives and obsessing over her weight a long time before she met her husband. Even Richard talked about that in her life story.

I thought that anorexia stemmed from a sense of lack of control in a persons life ,that's the reason it affects women more than men and is commonly the result of a very dominating mother , I had friends whose daughter suffered from this illness and the mother was very very controlling person.

Its interesting to me that Olivia Newton-John is really rather thin as well but Karen has taken on the sorta look that is Anorexia. The resemblance that the Anorexia sufferes take on scares the hell out of me!!
She can't hind it now. Just look at her. If you took those clothes off, you would see a walking skeleton, like you would see in the concentration camps holding the Jews in WWII.
She is way, way under her normal weight. Her normal weight for a woman for her height of 5'4" with her bone structure is 125-135. She does not look good at all.
I think she looks great. Perfect. If I were her, I would've stayed at the current weight and wouldn't have lost anymore. I don't know why everyone says she looks like she's dying. Her waist is so thin there. Perfection.

In all honesty I still don't understand this disease. The more I read about the complexities of it, the more I think common sense could work. Everyone around the person should continuously reassure them they are NOT overweight, and the person with the disease shpuld be pushed/prodded to eat food. Tough love. In just a year after she got married Karen went downhill. She looked so healthy and beautiful on her wedding day, then when her marriage started to deteriorate, she lost more weight. This video was taken about 11 months after her ill-fated wedding.
It's apparent throughout this interview that John Travolta is very taken aback at the state of Karen. He can hardly even bring himself to look directly at her. And I don't blame him. She looks horrifically emaciated.
I think she looks better than the GMA '81 interview at least. I mean, the effects of the anorexia are prominent here, but she really looks sick in that one.
I believe it is called "make up." Unfortunately Anorexic individuals will deny their symptoms just she did on GMC '81 interview. Sad - that she had a bad self -image. She was fine when she had a few extra lbs. Even though the hospital was given her medication to put weight back on - her poor heart couldn't cope any more.

In November 1981, about a month after this appearance, Karen finally admitted she needed help, and she flew to New York for a consultation with Dr. Levenkron. Then she spent almost all of 1982 in therapy with him, five days a week. Unfortunately, the damage to her body was already done. So sad....
Richard was always on her about eating but at the time he was have drug problems himself and passed out at one of their concerts. He was using pills to keep him awake because of their constant touring.

Any True Karen Carpenter Fan, would be just devastated, as we watch her slowly destroy her body, and eventually her life, even though she thinks she is happier for it, or this is something she has to do. Why, and for What..??
Anorexia is a psychological disorder, with serious physical consequences, and eventual loss of life, if not treated properly.
It's so preventable, and as for Karen, it's a crime. It just made me so mad and angry.. But, what can a fan do.. She didn't have to die...

The entire band looks and sounds old, tired, and worn out. As bad as Karen looks (and she looks horrible) her ability to sell a song is the only thing that makes this barely listenable. Terribly sad to watch.

Yes, Karen looks emaciated- but hey so does her brother Richard-- his face is bone thin- and no one seems to mention or be aware that he looks in the same way Karen does- for what purpose? To be in synch with each other? Also, this song "Back In My Life" was produced by ONJ's long time writer/producer- John Farrar and he went on to do I PARALYZE for Cher.

How could Karen compare to Olivia's looks! No wonder she made herself sick. Oh and Olivia's skimpy outfit! She looked skinny too! Olivia was the example of 80's beauty!! Karen was pretty but would never be Olivia. Two different types of beauty. Olivia could not hold a candle to Karen's voice. Now if Olivia had Karen's voice? That would be too much to handle!!

I'm sure Karen doesn't even weigh 100 lbs. here. This was taped September 1, 1981, almost exactly 5 months before she died. It's just heartbreaking. I have often thought she and Richard could eventually had their own theater in Branson, MO. They would still be packing in the crowds every night.

In just a year after she got married Karen went downhill. She looked so healthy and beautiful on her wedding day, then when her marriage started to deteriorate, she lost more weight. This video was taken about 11 months after her ill-fated wedding.

It's apparent throughout this interview that John Travolta is very taken aback at the state of Karen. He can hardly even bring himself to look directly at her. And I don't blame him. She looks horrifically emaciated.

I believe it is called "make up." Unfortunately Anorexic individuals will deny their symptoms just she did on GMC '81 interview. Sad - that she had a bad self -image. She was fine when she had a few extra lbs. Even though the hospital was given her medication to put weight back on - her poor heart couldn't cope any more.

I was just thinking while watching this the tragedy here....Olivia Newton John's boyfriend disappeared, John lost his son Jett and Karen died...very sad! Three really nice people and Charlie Manson is still probably "fit as a fiddle!"

In November 1981, about a month after this appearance, Karen finally admitted she needed help, and she flew to New York for a consultation with Dr. Levenkron. Then she spent almost all of 1982 in therapy with him, five days a week. Unfortunately, the damage to her body was already done. So sad....

Richard was always on her about eating but at the time he was have drug problems himself and passed out at one of their concerts. He was using pills to keep him awake because of their constant touring.
