Its not so much the power behind the punch. Its the contact with the chin and the jolt. I have seen way bigger hooks that does not make contact so well or doesn't really hit the spot. An example is the David Tua v Shane Cameron fight, the first left hook did not really look real, but it made contact right on the chin, and that really jolts your head.
