Bach is great yes but don't make him a God ,his genius was that he could compose in a night ,for money needs ,at the demande ,a cantata and even oratorio not less touching than cantate 147.....Genius? religious inspiration? or both? Is it important? just let our heart be overflown by this "divine" music!
What are trying to say? Almost all composers made their living by compsing and Bach was actually the first one who was making the living by not being a court composer by the way as Handel or Haydn; but remember Mozrt, Beethove, Tchaikovsky-all of them earned the money through music. For "touching" problem I think the problem is not in Bach music but in you, Jack, refine yourself and perchance some of the Bach's harmony would reveal to you some day
There needn't be a great controversy between Bach and Handel--both were great composers, and while I personally vastly prefer Bach, it is dangerous to speak of one as being greater than the other.
To me, Bach seems to have been a much more conscientious craftsman; his musical language tends to be more elevated than Handel's, who, it must be remember, composed mostly for a somewhat superficial musical public. Bach's voice is richer and deeper than Handel's, but Handel was capable of great things
: Ok, I agree, probably he means that, although he said "an italian opera composer" instead of "a composer of italian opera"... I don't blame him, my English is also terrible and possibly he isn't an English native speaker neither. :) I hope it didn't sound contemptuous.
The English sometimes claim Handel as one of theirs, given that he lived in London for a while and composed many of his most opoular pieces in English. And in their case it's perhaps also a tad understandable, given the acute scarcity of English quality composers.
But now Handes is also Italian? Come on! Besides--the Italians don't need him, they have plentiful greats from Palestrina to Verdi.
how lucky we are simple mortals to have the opportunity to listen to such heavenly music any time we want in the modern times thanks to technology, just to think that in those times didn´t exist electricity and people have to listen to these gems only when a group gathered together, now every single moment we have the chance to listen to GOD through his voice :JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH, to those who don´t believe just listen to this pearl felt from heaven!
Well, not really. Handel is more understandable to the general public since he was not as much of the philisopher and genius as Bach. There us always a shadow to a genius like Mozart and Saglieri, Faust and Wagner, in case of Bach his shadow was Handel.
händel couldn't be in bach's shadow since bach was not famous back then. mozart probaby didn't know saglieri personally - you shouldn't use halftrue knowledge from movies. who is faust?
Dear friend, Faust is the character from the Goethe's famed novel.....and I use the knowlwdge aqcuired form Abert's works....Bach was not famous and it just underlines the notion that publicity does everything....Handel was just lucky to get into London and be the Court composer if not Handel it would be Thelemann, if not Thelemann it could be someone else....but Bach is God, my dear, and his harmony is unsurpassable.
i agree that bach created a very touchable harmony... i thought you meant faust... but why is he the shadow of wagner? doesn't make sense to me... but anyhow!
Wagner was the pupil of Faust and that is why he considered to be a shadow. I did not mean Richard Wagner. Personally I admire Handel very nuch, there is a veruy interestin play by german writer Paul Barz about possible meetong of Bach and Handel, that in reality had never happened
But I disagree with your evaluation of Bach as touchable harmony; there are entities in classical tradition which are univesally accepted as dogma, one of them is that Bach created an usupassabel harmony.
Without accepting such dogma's we will soon be climbing the trees and culture would vanish as it is vanishing now when M.Jacson is claimed as "star" and "musician"...because in normal societies monkeys reside in the zoo
vielen Dank für diese Darbietung, es ist doch ein schones harmonisches Tempo und die Instrumente sind perfekt auf den Chor abgestimmt. EIne große Hymne zum Lobe Gottes, Gott segne Euch!

@paquitolo You make me laugh! Your command of English is obviously excellent. And good point about the Italian opera composer confusion.
