Somehow I always install this game during December and play it until late Januari or when it is snowing heavily. I loved the storyline even though some of the parts are confusing like the year of the setting as it is sometimes 1981 and then sometimes 1960 or something.
@Bloosjen frictional makes some of the best horror games and this game to be honest, does not look that good, it is like a deadspace a bloogy woogy woo not a silent hill 2 a bloogy woogy woo. what i'm saying is that if it isn't frictional then it is not going to be a good horror
@ace213d I disagree, Dead Space and Dead Space 2 are both just as good horror games as the Silent Hill genre. Visceral Games is right up there with Frictional.
It worries me that younger gaming generation wants so called "casual" games. This is seen in the increasing amount of short games especially FPS games and that gaming companies focus more in the multiplayer than the singleplayer. Cryostasis is a good example of a dying breed of FPS gaming. I personally like singleplayer over multiplayer anytime. Multiplayer should be a nice addition to a good singleplayer campain and not the other way around.
@3210code I guess it does, if you want to make sense of the story and appreciate it from the start when you will be in the dark about what is going on first time through. Also, it is a pretty damn long game for an FPS :P

@retnuHDJ I am 15, and I agree with you XD. There are many games, including Cryostasis, that I would rather much play more than CoD4 and Halo 3. This game is great, as many older games still are, all FPS games today are shit, its all explosions and graphics, no storyline, no good gameplay. I want gameplay, I want storyline, and I want a game that actually keeps me interested after the 1-3 level -_-

Also, don't worry if your computer struggles to run the game. I don't know if it is fixed with patches now, but the game stuttered often when it was usually at high FPS. Hopefully it is sorted now :P
@SLITTHROAT13 I have played them :D They are bloody brilliant, and I would go so far as to say that Amnesia: Dark Descent is better! I highly, highly recommend it if you liked Penumbra. It is made by the same people :D (I know you have probably already heard about it and played it, but just in case :P )

@retnuHDJ no offense but it seems that some people such as yourself seem to forget the fact that halo 1 came out at a time where most games where set in WW2, so although it has lost its originality a little its still very different from most other shooters, I mean tell me where else will you find an ennemy that will cry and run away like a lunatic: Grunts. Although I will agree atmosphere trumphs all and and Bioshock 1, 2 and System Shock 2 will remain my favorite FPS forever.

@retnuHDJ lol yeah cryostasis was so good that I even played through it in 800x600 resolution and all graphiucals effects switched off because anything higher would raise my gpu temperature above 100 degrees C, I have a pretty decent gaming rig it just runs hot :P I wish I could have played with better lighting :(

I do agree with most of what you said though. I'm not saying COD and Halo are bad games by any means. I just find them bland in comparison to what else is out there. I just get annoyed when game critics seem to genuinely believe that Halo 3 and some COD games are the best of this generation (or last 10 years), and original games often get no attention.
This game is fukken sweet. Any little ass hat who thinks otherwise doesn't realize the point of it and should, as Smicallion said, go back to your retarded ass Modern Warfare and Halo. (Btw the Halo games are the shittiest games of all time). This is a scary and mesmerizing tale of a regular man lost in a snowstorm. He stumbles across an old, iced-over ship and decides, ultimately with no other options, to take refuge. He from there on discovers the horrid history of the ship and so on.
This look to much like penumbra in my opinion. Even the protagonist looks similar. I hope they dont use penumbra's lack of media to there advantage and take over as the "better" game.. i'd be pissed. Penumbra was a work of art, and scary as hell.

@LieutenantDan605 Gunplay? considering combat is mainly focused on melee, you may find half a clip, IDK, every 40 minutes? depends on if you're lucky enough to find it.
The game is not well optimized. i7 960 with GTX 470. Everything max and high resolution with AA PhysX. Sometimes I get 60+. Sometimes I get 30 and below. The game was not designed for multicore processors. If you don't have a decent videocard, prepared to have major lag.
This game had a lot of gameplay and performance issues/poor graphics optimization. But you know what? It was unique. It had a creepy, slowly unfolding story. It was atmospheric. The pacing was at times glacial, and the actual movement and shooting was often clumsy and repetitive. Still, I can't help but think fondly of this title. I enjoyed it.
This, Penumbra, System Shock and that segments of that completely broken Call of Cthulhu game would have to be my favorite horror games. Too many "Horror" games get it all wrong, like Bioshock, or F.E.A.R where your some kick ass guy who really has nothing to fear at all. Being almost defenseless, feeling constant pressure, Thats what makes it scary.
That said, I think this game gave you too much ammo near the end, At the start, every time I missed I would cringe, you needed every bullet.

cod4 and halo are not mediocre they are one of the best multiplayer games ever made

And the single player in both COD4 and Halo were overrated, even if they are mainly multiplayer games.

@ZombieAlienHamster Haven't played any of those games, but I have seen my friend play through Eternal Darkness when we were pretty young (it was awesome at the time) and I have always wanted to try Call of Cthulhu (reading the book now :P ).

@retnuHDJ I agree. Personally, I think both COD and Halo both deserve all of respect for the way they revolutionized multiplayer gaming, but it sucks that we are in a generation of gaming where people just dont appreciate great single player games like Cryostasis, Mass Effect, Red Dead, etc. :(

rooms pitch black, headphones and full screened, and im going to download this right now. sounds and atmosphere is amazing and 2.05 was fucking intense!!!!

@retnuHDJ I Would agree that most gamers are utterly blinded to good games by the shitty ones like COD, but I wouldn't say that Halo is unoriginal, but that's just me, I am a sci-fi fan and halo is sort of sci fi, although I do think it may get ruined if Microshit try to milk it for all its worth as it appears they are going to. But still I totally agree with you that the gming community is getting numb from all of the unoriginal shit thrown their (our) way, I just hope that the good ones stay.

@retnuHDJ lol yeah cryostasis was so good that I even played through it in 800x600 resolution and all graphiucals effects switched off because anything higher would raise my gpu temperature above 100 degrees C, I have a pretty decent gaming rig it just runs hot :P I wish I could have played with better lighting :(

I do agree with most of what you said though. I'm not saying COD and Halo are bad games by any means. I just find them bland in comparison to what else is out there. I just get annoyed when game critics seem to genuinely believe that Halo 3 and some COD games are the best of this generation (or last 10 years), and original games often get no attention.

This game is fukken sweet. Any little ass hat who thinks otherwise doesn't realize the point of it and should, as Smicallion said, go back to your retarded ass Modern Warfare and Halo. (Btw the Halo games are the shittiest games of all time). This is a scary and mesmerizing tale of a regular man lost in a snowstorm. He stumbles across an old, iced-over ship and decides, ultimately with no other options, to take refuge. He from there on discovers the horrid history of the ship and so on.

The game is not well optimized. i7 960 with GTX 470. Everything max and high resolution with AA PhysX. Sometimes I get 60+. Sometimes I get 30 and below. The game was not designed for multicore processors. If you don't have a decent videocard, prepared to have major lag.

This game had a lot of gameplay and performance issues/poor graphics optimization. But you know what? It was unique. It had a creepy, slowly unfolding story. It was atmospheric. The pacing was at times glacial, and the actual movement and shooting was often clumsy and repetitive. Still, I can't help but think fondly of this title. I enjoyed it.

This, Penumbra, System Shock and that segments of that completely broken Call of Cthulhu game would have to be my favorite horror games. Too many "Horror" games get it all wrong, like Bioshock, or F.E.A.R where your some kick ass guy who really has nothing to fear at all. Being almost defenseless, feeling constant pressure, Thats what makes it scary.
That said, I think this game gave you too much ammo near the end, At the start, every time I missed I would cringe, you needed every bullet.
