who ever thinks he did this to be cocky is wrong. who ever he was fighting in this video wasn't committing on his punches. he put his hand behind his back so he would commit ant open his face up so jones can knock him out. very smart tactical move
Here is Jones fighting an opponent who he could've beaten in his sleep. Jones absolutely pathetic with this stupid behind the back move. Pure ghetto crap. Jones an embarrassment to the dignity of the sport with these country bumpkin chicken-fighting moves. Stupid.
@jurdoc11 so its jones's fault that the guy hes fighting was soo shit? people want to be entertained, this is what entertainers do. Especially to pull it of in a dangerous sport like boxing when really your life is on the line, and he still comes out with this shit. Hes amazing.
@jurdoc11 Yeah because the crooked ass promoters in that era didn't set up these kinds of fights? Just because he can land this punch with that effect he shouldn't because it is "ghetto" in your opinion? What a moron you make yourself out to be with that comment. He had his style like all other boxers had theirs his clearly worked and made him one of the best of all time. Hold your tongue because you can't hold a candle to his "ghetto" punch, or accomplishments, you are pathetic so just shut up.
Jones got so many knockouts while he's show boating because the other boxer will try and show boat back...and before they even know what's going on they hear Jimmy Lennon Jr. announcing..."....And STILL..."
Thats the cheekest knockout i've seen for bloody ages. He has got a real eye for boxing and when you mix that with the ammount of skill he has it's a deadly combo.
if he would have retired after beating Ruiz for his heavyweight title, Jones would be a top 5 of all time fighter. That kind of speed doesn't stay with you into your late 30s
In his prime, nobody was his rival or equal during that period. Can't say that about anyone commenting negatively about the man on a youtube vidoe. LOL
No he got knocked for the first time and became gun shy. From a story I watched about him he has always been worried about being seriously hurt in the ring. When he was at the top of his game no one could be him though.
Roy as great as he was in his prime wasnt durable enough to eclipse Robinson. When Robinson faced Lamota for the middleweight title his record stood at 120 1 and 2 draws yes thats one hundred wins two draws and one loss.
Considering that this fight is against an Australian garbage collector (no joke--look it up) I call this about as impressive as Babe Ruth hitting a home run off a tee.
History will not be kind to Roy Jones Jr. His epitath will read: incredible talent, never took a chance, didn't know when to quit, no signature win. There isn't a GREAT win in his career anywhere.
@DOUGDIAMOND29 Just my opinion, I agree with you 100%. I'll bet 20 bucks you are over 30. it's very rare people that didn't watch Roy first hand through out his entire prime appreciate him the way those that did.
no way bro. his style has massive flaws that his terrible competition more than compensated for. can you imagine jones beating the likes of joe frazier? i think a great infighter like him would be too much for roy, he wasn't that tough and he hated the inside. and if james toney hadn't lost his conditioning at the time of their fight i think it would have at least been a lot closer.
@DOUGDIAMOND29 he was, theres no denying it......its like mayweather, i hate that little fuck with a passion and im dieing for someone to put him on his ass...but... when he fights i put all my money on him
In his prime he was INCREDIBLE and he knew it! No way you lead with your HEAD hands behind your back like that... even Ali never did that... and then he KO's the guy seconds later! Incredible!!!
I remember seeing roy jones fight in the seoul olympics in 1988 where he smashed the korean to pieces in the final and was robbed 3-2.Even the korean couldn't believe he got the decision.I believe that fight was the main reason they changed the scoring procedure for amateur boxing .Such a shame to rob an outstanding fighter of a thoroughly deserved gold medal. If the korean was any sort of man he'd have given the gold medal to jones and took his well earned silver.
Roy Jones was probably the most gifted boxer ever at least in terms of speed and coordination to bad he didn't have a good chin, well not at the end of his career.
Mike Tyson is pure destroyer! He was so Solid and agressive, other boxers were frightened of him before they even stepped in the ring with him haha! Mike was the best! I mean, who else do you know who would bite someones ear in a boxing match haha!
Uh yes, doubt. Seeing him as a young kid proves that he had great talent, but afterwards it was mostly a matter of following orders from his trainer in a machine-like fashion. He did not have the creativity of people like Ali or Jones.
i can see where u come from, he had speed power and intimidation and it was basically rooney fightin every fight, u can see he didnt no how to think on his own when rooney left, but tyson-rooney was a great team
Tyson had defense too and stamina and was really fast. That is why is managers were able to get him 2-3 fights a year when he was on top because he was never getting hit.
I thought Jones was a heavyweight too. Any way, Tyson is much more than strength and intimidation. Tyson had speed, stamina, dodging skills, etc. Tyson was the youngest and greatest heavyweight champion ever.
If you think Calzaghe compares to Jones, you should follow another sport. FFS, where do these people come from? Roy Jones was arguably the greatest P4P in history in his prime, Calzaghe is a nothing (I'm British by the way). Roy was absolutely unstoppable, and would have destroyed Calzaghe in the first round, if both were in their prime.
sure sure always waht if.... if a man talks the talk he has to back it up ko he called ko thats all i wanna do..joe says just hear to do a job....And with a weak left hand after it broke in previous fight he was told he had to fight regardless. undefeated is all i have to say..
i respectfully disagree, i think Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest p4p boxer, even at that when the sport and training methods werent fully evolved, he could still hold his side in a ring today, his style, his movements was just amazing. Unique head movement and footwork, i think he was unmatched and still is, even by Ali.
Fair enough, and I wouldn't argue with that either. It simply depends what you want, flair or technique. Robinson had flawless technique and some flair, Roy had flair that Ali would be jealous of, and absolutely zero technique (in terms of textbook technique), but that's what made him great, he had so much over any other boxer, he didn't even need technique! I'm NOT saying I think he's better than Robinson, however I am still saying he's arguably the GOAT, depending on what you want from a boxer
yeah i would agree with that, a lot of the best fighters have something that the outbest everybody else, ali had his amazing foot work and his attitude is what made him win, tyson had the agressivness speed and raw power also the character of tyson was just simply scary, its arguable who you decide to call teh best :) but no doubt roy jones jr deserves to be called by some the best fighter to ever lived
I think it depends on the era in which the guy fought. Sugar Ray was way ahead of his time and fought a bunch of guys who would be considered journeyman status today. Ali fought during the Golden Era of HW's and for the most part he dominated but didn't have nearly the 150 fight record that Robinson did. Jones jumped weight just to find worthy opponents for a challenge. If you ask me then I would agree with you and say Robinson dominating lesser competition for such a longtime barely exceeds Ali.
i agree. To be honest i never was a big fan of judging a fighter by his record, i mean Marciano had 49-0 record a perfect record but i wouldnt consider him the best, and i agree sugar ray was ahead of his time, i think he was a prodigy, a genius at that time. A little bit like the Da Vinci of boxing at that time, but truthfully Its so hard to categorise a boxer as the best, one thing is for sure all these guys we named here deserve the title of legend.
I know this isn't my argument since I just posted and I'm too young to know these boxers but ESPN listed this Sugar Ray Robinson as the greatest of all time boxer so he must be good.
you should shut the fuck up about how tarver knocked him out, every Roy jones jr video ive seen youve commented about how hes terrible, hed knock you the fuck out, and thats all that matters
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yeah, he could probably knock me out. So what? I'm not a professional fighter anymore and he's above my weight. If knocking out "me" is all that matters, I guess that says a lot about Roy Jones quality of opposition and his pathetic accomplishments.
