@radicright it is a song about a post nuclear apocalypse. It was written by Bonnie Dobson in 1962. When she released this everyone was suprised because it wasn't the light stuff she had recorded earlier.
I've heard 20 versions of this over the years, even from Robert Plant, and not 1 on the list is bad. Lulu is on my top 5 for the song. What pipes, tho' restrained!
The Jeff Beck Group grooved well with it. (Rose, not bad ..with his kickin' band to help..)
Possibly, Devo & The Human Beings did my fave group-renderings of the song, tho'.
Singing with emotion from the heart.....that's what this song is all about & Lulu does it with class....maybe I'm biased being a Canadian that married a Brit; however, very well done...brings back my teen years. Thanks for the Post.
@bugstrut At that time Scottish, Welsh or Irish accents weren't heard much on the BBC - I don't know why! Same with North of England, though The Beatles started the change to acceptance. I'm Scottish and one of the things about Lulu that grated with us was when she appeared on national tv she had the accent she had on display on this show, but if she appeared on STV or BBC Scotland she reverted to the Scots! I still love her though!
@allanscot1 You can hear that she is a Scottish women it comes out in the singing voice quit clearly , even if you closed your eyes and listened carfully I'm sure you could tell that it was not a genric american interpretion of the song she had a ballsy delivery which was a head of its time, for white female singers and she was no bad looking shame she has been reduced to presenting crap retro shows on the BBC. She was in the same leuge as Dusty Sprinfield Is it true she was a jambo ?
@jasonfury1 Not a jambo, she is from Glasgow and is from a Rangers supporting family! She is a great singer, and it's just a pity she allowed herself to be manipulated into the 'family entertainment' spectrum coz she has a great voice and should have been doing 'meatier' stuff than 'I'm a Tiger' etc. I still love her though!
I haven't heard this version of this song since 1968. She is probably the most unlikely person to sing this song. It is a very good cover but all of them pale to the gritty realism of Tim Rose.
a modern classical style, indeed....at least she doesnt squeeze her voice and scream into the microphone and make fuss like those so-called modern singers ! I like her !
Love this tune!

My favorite song of 1968. I was only 10, but 1968 was a very sad, turbulent year.

Was she advised to lose her Scottish accent?

This song has been covered by a lot of people but Lulu's version is still my favorite although The Bethlehem Exit would be a close second.

Lulu is lovely, and I've been a fan of hers since the late 60's. On this set though, I could do without all the mist.
