Civil marriage serves a societal interest. That is why it exists. That interest has been acknowledged by courts, legislatures, and the people for centuries. That interest is served by the union of a man and a woman exclusively. It is not and cannot be served by the union of two men or two women.

With the Senate already on record 21 to 14 in favor of the bill, todays House vote means that the legislation granting equal marriage rights to same-sex couples is only two steps away from final passage.
