  • great vid def add you as a friend now!

  • Nice Video ,, But I am Useing Logic 9 With Waves Plugins

And Everyday I am Trying To Mix My Vocal With A instrumental

But When i Lsn To My Mix its Just Fail T,T

Can You Help Or Do A Video How To Mix Lead Vocals With A instumental Pllllz

    Useing " Logic 9 "

  • What's that plug-in on the top monitor called that you use for referencing to compare the tracks?

  • @TheIV101 Waves PAZ Analyzer.

  • nice video . i have a question if you have a low budget microphone can u still make the vocals sound good with the mastering? (ive never used pro tools before only mixcraft)

  • @Dakid295 A Shure KSM 32 is not bad. Audio Technica studio mics are decent too...

  • what was the name of the compressor you used on the rap beat?

  • I've been searching for a tutorial like this for almost two years now, thank you!

  • Great video, thanks very much.

  • Wow, thanks!

  • how do you bounce down to 2 tracks?

  • @guitarnick914 You could solo just the tracks you want to be part of the first mix and then bounce. Then repeat for the other half.

  • whats thats spectrum analyzer called?

  • @Burkhardt0121 Waves PAZ Analyzer.

  • I also would like to send you a track to see how it comes out and I wanted to know a price.

  • @flyguy500k Email me for all the details! See the end of the video for the address.

  • How much did you spend on those plug-ins and what waves bundle did you buy?

  • @flyguy500k I think I started with Platinum. I've added a lot a la carte. I probably should have just bought Mercury from the beginning. I've probably spent close to that amount... $4-5K.

  • Pretty cool video. Thanks for the tip on how to master rap vocals. Over the years, I have read so much on special tools and faders to get the vocals to ride the waveform and of course the prices that come with those tools that I did not see how it could be done. It seems that your method of the send it to the compressor should accomplish the same goal. I'm working on an unrelated project now, but when I get to the rap album I am going to try out the method and see what happens. Thanks again.

  • @mnash3 I'm always a fan of finding compression settings that do most of the vocal riding automatically. Sometimes it takes two compressors to achieve good results.

  • @bdub-Thanks for the feedback. That is actually a very important note e.g. that I might need 2 compressors to get it done. I would have been very annoyed working in the project for hours and not understanding why it is not working. LOL... This tip is perfect because I do have a similar scenario where I have some mastered instrumentals and will be laying the vocals on a separate track. For some of the instrumentals, there are no hooks/background vocals, but I'll add them as I work on the project.

  • @bdubrecords

I always enjoy manual rides... lol

  • How does one get in touch with you to send tracks for Mastering, and do you do Mixing also? Cheers, I love the video, very ' to the point '.

  • @Sixalienasa Send me a private message on YouTube, and I'll get you all the details!

  • Very nice I learned a lot with this tutorial thank u so much

  • avaxhome vst

  • nice!! Very well explained

  • i have a latency problem when using these plug ins

  • @Bosstraxx If using PT9 or higher, go to Setup -> Playback Engine. Set the Delay Compensation Engine to Long, and you should have no problem.

  • Hey Bill, can you email me at carmonag@ymail.com - I'd like to ask you a few questions, it might need more than the max characters in this youtube box haha. Thanks Bill. Appreciate it!!

  • hey i got the waves bundle i heard Q10 was the most preferred eq im having trouble making my vocals sound like i want them can you make a tutorial on EQ and COMPRESSION?

  • @Bosstraxx Great idea. I will work on that next. Look for it soon!

  • Wow this was a HUGE help for my mixing Thank you

  • You are the man !!!! lol .... When can i send you something so i can hear how yours sound compared to mine ?

  • Hi i just got Pro tools 9 for windows but it will not start up. When I click to open I get the hourglass for a few seconds then nothing... I've uninstalled, reinstalled, .. tried everything.

  • what is the frequency analyzer called in the background is it waves or protools?

  • @CoverBoyCM That's Waves' PAZ-Analyzer.

  • what is the frequency analyzer called in the background is it waves or protools?

  • Very helpful video. You covered just the basics, which is exactly what I needed. Thanks very much. I do have one question: dithering. Do I put the dither on the track after the limiter and then simply bounce the song down to a 16-bit file and voila? Or is there something more to it? Thanks!

  • @Seraplane PT9 is 24-bit native, so everything should dither to 24-bit. Pro Tools will dither to 16-bit if you so choose when bouncing. PT10 is better, so there's no need to dither between plugins, I think. But I don't have it yet.

  • How much do you charge to master tracks?

  • @americanasshole1 As of right now (early 2012), $40/track, with discounts for full albums. If someone is reading this post in the future, these prices may no longer be applicable, though...

  • you said if we subscribe we get a song mastered for free?

  • @YoungnZTV Yes, email me for more details!

  • Do you sigh people ....if so I would Luke to know

  • @maxxpayne309 No, not right now. Just mixing and mastering -- mainly mastering.

  • can you send me a message with mastering prices? im young and talented but my engineer is self tought and not exactly the best.

  • do it matter what order you place the plug in when you are mixing and mastering, i hear this a lot that the order is very important to the sound of the track

  • @bigdeseil Yes, I typically EQ first so that the compressor is not affected by frequencies that are no longer part of the mix. Limiting is definitely last.

  • how do you set up the PAZ analyzer to remain on the screen the whole time, even when your opening other plugins on the tracks and such?

  • @jbundpuremindstudios Click the little red bullseye in the top right of the window. After that, you can open up other plugins, but it will stay up.

  • could i pay you to master tracks for me?

  • @JesseRoyle1 I just sent you my email address. Let's talk about it!

  • I was wondering if You could master a track for me?

  • @JesseRoyle1 Where did he get the "Reference Track" from? is it the output of a plugin? or was it the song Already mastered?? I'm so confused about something So simple

  • thanks for the love of music

  • pretty cool

  • great tutorial you nake things really looj simple even thoufh its not

  • The meat, I have the hardest time getting everything to sit perfectly

  • will these plugins going to work with cubase 5???...wave plugins work with cubase????

  • @niggasingh I believe so, I think my producer has it, and he uses Nuendo, Nuendo and cubase are both by steinberg and essentially the same program

  • @niggasingh yes, I use Waves in Cubase 5 ;)

  • @bdubrecords will these plugins going to work with cubase 5???...wave plugins work with cubase????

  • @niggasingh I think so, but that's something you'd definitely want to email Waves about before making a purchase.

  • i dont understand the point of bouncing it and then mastering it. Couldnt you just add the plug ins on the stereo out?

  • @StoryWB Yes, I do it that way now.

  • @bdubrecords By far this best mixing/mastering engineering video I've seen so far, and some really key pieces of information. How about a 'in the box' mix/mastering video on rap/rnb? :p

  • @StoryWB you shouldnt master in pro tools. daw have limitations such as 24 bit (pro tools hdx has 64 bit bus but its 10 grnad) you should master in something like apples wave burner

  • Wow! Thanks MAN!!!!!!!

  • Mr.Bill, please make a video tutorial mastering "in the box" using a sonar 8 software!! :'(

  • Mr.Bill, please make a video tutorial mastering "in the box" using a sonar 8 software!! :'(

  • i was wondering ..are the mixdowns the same in adobe audition and protools if you use the same plugins? my question is will the sound be the exact same

  • @raydatroubleshooter Theoretically, it should be the same, as long as all the settings are identical and the plugins are identical.

  • @bdubrecords , what kind of soundcard would you recommend for proper mastering having flat frq response?

  • @5m1nutes Most sound cards don't color the sound, so it's not that big of a worry. The bigger deal is the signal to noise ratio and the proper inputs and outputs that you need for your mics, instruments and monitors. I always recommend an external USB or FireWire device.

  • @bdubrecords , 10x.

  • Don't know if it's been mentioned in the thread, but my issue in mastering is getting the track to a good enough level (against a reference track) without it clipping. I don't have a lot of plugins, so i use a gentle eq and a maximizer. It sounds good, but always clips when I listen to the bounce. Any info or links you could send me???

  • @abovestudios Great question. Keep its maximum level to -0.2 dB to prevent this. And make sure your master fader is at zero. For maximum loudness without distortion, you need a really good limiter. Waves makes some great ones, though they are a bit expensive...

  • This video is very helpful. Bill what would be your settings on eq'n a rap vocal?

  • @jnasty23swag It varies, based on who is singing and what mic they're using and how it fits into the rest of the mix. With modern rap, I typically add a LOT of highs, shelving from 4 kHz up and then use a de-esser or multi-band compressor to tame the sibilants.

  • ... a sound that jumps and ducks several times within say a tenth of a second, and is quite irritating to the ear.

  • @dennismstamps If the buzzing is clipping, there is a De-Clipper plug-in with Adobe Audition that does pretty well. Most times, that kind of overmodulation is not fixable, though.

  • Thanks for those suggestions; I will definitely check them out! One other question for you though, and this may be a bit of a stretch but, is there any software/plugin you know of that deals with "buzzing" audio? For instance, a person speaking into a microphone hits a loud syllable, and it causes the audio level to fluctuate many times in a very short period of time. Not sure what may cause it, whether it's the person's voice, the microphone itself, or anything else? The end result is...

  • ... frequency peaks regardless of the overall volume at the given moment. Do you know of any other plugins that do this kind of thing?

  • @dennismstamps A friend told me that there's a dynamic EQ plugin, perhaps by McDSP if I'm remembering correctly, that might do what you're talking about (reduce people regardless of overall volume). Sorry I don't remember exactly. Check out avid (dot) com/US/categories/Audio-Plug-ins/Audio-Plug-ins-Pro-Tools

  • @dennismstamps Also, the Serato Rane Compressor (in Dynamic EQ mode) has a "relative threshold" setting which is wonderful, but it's only TDM.

  • @iCruzTv In my experience, I've found that the most useful plugins aren't included in any of their bundles (except for Mercury). Watch for a sale if you want to buy the SSL, PuigTec, PuigChild, L316, etc. individually, because they're not cheap!

  • ... prominance limiting or prominance compression, without costing thousands of dollars? Any help is appreciated!

  • I'm working with a piece of audio and I'm wondering if you could help me out. The audio in question is filled with sporadic and wide-spread prominence peaks that make it quite difficult to listen to. EQing doesn't do any good in this case because the peaks are all over the place. Compression/limiting is also no help because it only manipulates the overall volume of the track, and doesn't do anything about the peaks at certain frequencies.

Do you know of any plugins/tools that perform...

  • @dennismstamps The Waves L316 is a 16-band limiter and can deal with those peaks quite intelligently...

  • @bdubrecords From watching the video, (correct me if I'm wrong but...) the L316 only seems to kick in during the loudest moments/transients of the audio, in other words, there might be shrieky/jagged audio sitting at say, 4 or 5 dB below the height of the transients, and the plugin won't do anything to that part of the audio unless it's set to a very aggressive setting, at which point it would overly squash the audio track as a whole.

I guess what I'm looking for is a plugin that deals with..

  • @dennismstamps Because the L316 deals with frequencies independently of one another, a spike in 500 Hz, for example, could still be attenuated, even though the overall level of the track isn't that high. As far as "squashing" goes, the L316 is by about 1,000% the best limiter I've ever used. You can do pretty extreme things before it starts to sound squashed, if the settings are right.

  • WHATS ON YOUR MASTERING CHAIN?

  • @boderrickshorter Typically, I use Waves SSL or PuigTec EQs, the LinEQ, PuigChild or LinMB as needed, then the L316 to finish it off. There are plenty of others like the Center plugin that I have at my disposal for special situations too.

  • @bdubrecords thanks but im having a major problem im using a tlm 103,avalon compressor, yamaha 8" monitors a imac ect........and i got the entire waves bundle my recording levels are great but i cant get my vocal to come to the front like you got yours any help

  • @boderrickshorter Cut below 90 Hz on your vocal and give a little presence boost at the top end. If that doesn't work, you can carve out a hole for it to sit in by cutting 2 kHz in the instrumentation.

  • @boderrickshorter You can also use a side-chained compressor, keyed to the vocals, to reduce the instrumentation gain by a dB or two when the vocals are present.

  • Very informative video, thank you.

  • Hey, a little off topic but what setup are you using to send video from your laptop to your TV? I would like a similar setup for mixing and mastering so I can have the mix on my laptop screen and plugins on my larger screen.

  • @bbmarcon I'm using Apple's mini Display Port to HDMI adapter, that's all!

  • help. we just installed PT9 and when we play through it it sounds great BUT when we start recording it sounds super staticy

  • beautiful! this is one of the most brilliant and easily understood mastering tutorial i have seen so far! I learned a lot! thanks bdub!

  • What's the name of that programs your using to look at your references? The two on your larger monitor.

Thanks it'll really help seeing that I'm teaching myself how to Engineer.

  • @ShawtyVez3 The useful one is Waves PAZ-Analyzer. The other is just for looks. PAZ shows you everything it does and more.

  • is it possible to master an audio track that I've made outside of pro tools?

  • @KitMusicDojo Absolutely. It works on any audio file(s).

  • WAT DO U MEAN BY A REFERENCE TRACK? THANX CAN U PLEASE EXPLAIN?

  • @diamondkavemedia Great question. A reference track is a commercial song by an artist that sounds like you want to sound. I reference popular rappers' song to know how the EQ and loudness should sound when I master for rappers, for example.

  • could you do a tut on how to eq rap vocals with waves.. i have waves but dont understand how eq works

  • @wdb4eva Will do! Thanks for the suggestion.

  • @bdubrecords thanks

  • nice vid man..really nice

  • im totally subscribing bc no one else explains this stuff better than u. if u had a protools 9 how to dvd i would so buy it.

  • What a great little tutorial!

Waves gives good manuals for each individual plug-in, but figuring out how to use them together is another matter. There's very little info out there, so thanks for sharing your experience.

    cheers

  • you sexyyy home boy so you can run and tell that!

  • does pro tools 9 comes with all these plugings?

  • @aliedurand No, these are Waves plug-ins.

  • is it easy to put plugins to pro tools 9 and do most plugins work?

  • @ThisIsJakeup Very easy to set up. I used Waves' installer, and they were there next time i started Pro Tools up...

  • yo dude i like your tutorials but i was told from studio engineers that it's not a good idea to master with head phones because you can't hear the bass freq well is that something you agree with

  • @headbagger63 I use headphones to spot check things that I might not hear on speakers, but there's no substitute for high quality studio monitors.

  • @bdubrecords thanks man you awesome

  • not bad i feel like theres an over use of plug ins though

  • Help! Is it possible to get audio out of my PC internal speakers running Pro tools MP9 using the fast track pro? When the fast track is connected, I can only get audio through the fast tracks headphones? Please, please if any one knows the answer to this.....thanks.

  • @TEZZOR8 I believe Pro Tools M-Powered only works with M-Audio hardware.

  • @TEZZOR8 me and my friends are able to listen to the tracks when we plug computer speakers into the mic.

  • U FUNNY MAN BUT TAUGHT ME ALOT

  • Youre one of the Best masters Ive heard yet on Youtube, Keep it up. i might have to send you one of my mixes or two for Mastering; Mixing takes up most of my Time..hardly have time to Master.

  • Me again do u know when you will do the rap tutorial..??

  • love the tutorial..... the rapper sucks tho...

  • First off, great video and thanks! I'm just curious about one thing. I noticed that you have dither set on both the lineMB and the L316. Is this optimal? I thought you should only dither once (or if you are reducing the bit depth).

  • @slam419 Great point. I thought Waves documentation recommended dithering to 24-bit each time, but I may be wrong...

  • Great tutorial, real informative. Did I hear you right? the first mastering is free? . regardless, instant sub...Thanks for sharing your knowledge..

  • in the rap master how did u set up the compressor to key off his vox im tryin to figure it out...

  • @greenmeaniebandits I'm using the compressor bundled with Pro Tools. Hit the Key icon and then drop down the list on the left side to choose the key source.

  • you are.....off the chain. Oh yeah, I learned something.

  • What's the plug-in right next to PAZ Analyzer? I mean I know it's a VU meter, is that Waves too?

  • @Jesteminny1726 No, that came with Pro Tools 9.

  • @Jesteminny1726 Thats the Bomb Factory Meter Bridge plugin, it comes with Protools ... use it to place on your submix, to check for obvious RMS levels or just use it on the Master Fader when youre Mastering.

  • Annddddd....you have another subscriber. I actually learned something.

  • What is that plugin you use on the right of the big display? The one that shows the frequency response. Thanks!

  • @ThePotatoeShow1 That's the Waves PAZ Analyzer.

  • hi..i was just checking to see when u will do the tutorial with the same plugins on a rap song with kick and 808

  • hi..i was just checking to see when u will do the tutorial with the same plugins on a rap song with kick and 808

  • i meant doubler

    lol

  • @greenmeaniebandits I don't remember exactly, but you'll want to make sure it's hard panned left and right and of course vary the delay and/and pitch. Sorry, it's actually been quite a while since I've done it that way. Most artists just re-record the track again and then pan the two takes hard left and right.

  • hey what are your settings on supertap delay to achieve that doubler effect on the rap vocals thats the exact sound im looking for and as much as i mess around with it i cant achieve that sound..

  • Thanks for the vid!

  • i want 2 knw what a best effect or filter 2 rap verses

  • i want 2 knw what a best effect or filter 2 rap verses

  • i want 2 knw what a best effect or filter 2 rap verses :)

  • nice, i just love the doubler effect on vocals some times, it realy adds nice warmth

  • Thank u very much Bill.....God Bless u...

  • @bdubrecords I'm definitely a noob when it comes to the vast world of mastering, but I was wondering why you didn't use a multiband compressor when sidechaining the vocal to the beat. wouldn't a regular compressor lower all the frequencies and not just the ones conflicting with the vocal and are there any techniques or products that can lower only the conflicting frequencies in the mix and allow the vocal to stand out. thanks

  • @deejaythrill That's actually a great question. I would have done that if I had a multiband compressor that allows for a sidechain input.

  • This is one of the best if not the best tutorials I have seen on youtube. I know this has nothing to do with the video but that fantom X8 is one of my favorite keyboards of all time...LOL! Thanks for the video.

  • @mrrobmw Yeah, I love the X8. Funny story.... the day after I bought it, they announced the G8, but hey, the X8 is still rockin'!

  • THANKS, GREAT TUTORIAL :)

  • thanks.....

  • sorry didnt mean to comment that many times I was using the youtube app on my...

  • Great tutorial sir..can you do another tutorial on how to master a rap song using the same plugins plz..

  • @jb9338 Yeah, man. I'll do that soon!

  • thanks man ive been useing waves for 10 years now and upgraded to mercury bundle almost 2 years ago. so many new fx to go thru i stuck to what i knew mostly you showed me stuff i didnt even know i had. thanks again keep up the good work

  • cool video.

  • Good tutorial bro, for the first time I just made a very good and rock solid master thanx 2 you! thx

  • Thank you so much for you taught me very useful information.hello from turkey

  • is l2 do the same thing as l3..same effect..cuz i am using waves l2 on almost all tracks that need maximizing ? I am gonna try l3 now.
