  • Not only could be the best C/W song ever written but the best song ever written period!!

  • See him grindin' his jaw... It's that crystal method

  • this could be the best country/western song ever written..

  • ray wylie hubbard wrote this song

  • @usarmy022 No Ray wylie Hubbard covers this song. James wrote it for the Saint Mary of the woods album.

  • If you dislike this; you are politically correct and have no roots in the fabric of America. Eat a peach......

  • @blackirishdave LMFAO

  • jdg,,you're an idiot..or not...where can i listen to your songs, that are better than McMurtrys'?

  • That's one great big ol pistol, 50 caliber made by bad ass Hebrews

  • hell yea

  • Basic day In Down here in Oklahoma lol .

  • @ParasiticDaemon No way, Ray can barely play guitar!!! This one "moves" and doesn't drag like the version of Ray's I just saw.

  • @ParasiticDaemon Ray is cool

  • I live in Durant Ok. i know the area he talks about very well even know where he talks about in Ks.as well since i grew up south of Wichita. The area i live now is full of meth n the people he talks about. The greatest cw song ever is not what u think it is its a song called Dan Blocker by Gorf Morlex now thats a great song give it a listen.

  • @jdg3273 Agreed I have family in Caddo, OK has always been the place for Meth for several years! I know that it is not a reason to be proud of but the Indie casinos have changed the area a lot, but in my opinion the Comanches deserve every damn dollar they get!

  • @jdg3273 "Dan Blocker" greatest ever? Surely you jest. I could've wrote that when I was 8, but I would not have because it's not even a song!

  • @altclyti lol

  • I like this Hillbilly! he can get with it

  • Uncle Slayton is a beast!

  • That's America in decline, baby

  • @Moose6340-No remember David Allen Coe's version of "You Never Even Called Me by My Name" written by Steve Goodman is the greatest C&W song ever. He said so and everything. So Jimmy's song can only be second best. But undoubtedly it is the best dysfunctional family song ever.

  • @LAMBKILLER You Never Even Called me by My Name was the greatest C&W song ever. This song has been elevated above that to the Greatest Song Ever. Much higher :-D

  • I love Johnny!

  • Saw James last night in Salt Lake City. Again a KILLER SHOW. This guy is the real deal. And being from Oklahoma originally, I can attest to the mood he paints in this tune.

  • Love it !! Anyone know what that tuning is ?

  • He can play!! 12 stringer

  • What's the tuning?

  • rwh version chugs mad ass cock

  • 6 min in ... "this's the good part"

  • Saw him and his 3-man band play last Friday night, New Orleans. great show.

  • This song rocks!!! I

  • Boomer!!!

  • @cpljones69 GOONER!!! Go Pokes!

  • @millertimebeast

    thats kinda ...gay

  • @cpljones69 Sooner!!!

  • 1st time I heard this is when some friends "Outlaw Jim and The Whiskey Benders" did a cover of it! Love it! Check them out if you want. They have some originals...but anyway. Just wanted to say I love this song. I can see it as he sings it!!

  • You know, the thumbs ARE kinda close to each other. Maybe those four people slipped and gave James a thumbs down. Song writing S.O.B he is.

  • Love his guitar style...

  • Guess they're missing out on the "rural point of view".

  • 4 veiwers are from the city!

  • OK, so we've got boozing up the kids to keep 'em quiet on a road trip, moonshine, crystal meth, guns, 18-wheelers, neon, lingerie, halter tops, and incest. THIS IS THE GREATEST SONG EVER.

  • @Moose6340

    Fuckin' A, Bubba.

  • @Moose6340 Yep, I would say that family puts the 'fun' in dysfunctional.

I've seen him twice; he never got out the 12-string, though. This is nice.

  • @Moose6340 Don't forget the cryptic reference to Uncle Slayton having to leave Texas.

  • @Moose6340 I think that about covers it.

  • Ashamed to say I only became aware of this song when I saw Bill Sheffield perform it at Bronte Blues Club last night. Not only did he credit James McMurtry with the authorship; he also stressed how much he admired McMurtry as a songwriter.

This song is an epic. A wonderful evocation of working class life almost anywhere.

  • My guess is that he remembers all of his "babies" names. I suspect the 'thumbs down" was because it talked about sex, drugs and guns - you know reality!

  • Love this song. What kind of person (or four persons) turns a thumb down to THIS?

  • Just heard this song of Radio Margaritaville. Great song. If not for Radio Margaritaville alot of people wouldn't hear this great music. Because local radio stations play junk. Thanks to Sirius or Xm peoplecan discover great music.

  • from one OKIE to another...........yyyeeeeeeeehhaaaaaaaaawwww

  • The funiest part of this is that I grew up in OK & I swear this describes so many people! Except for the kissin' cousins. And this is just kind of how we tell stories.

  • The funiest part of this is that I grew up in OK & I swear this describes so many people!

  • saw him in madison and it was incredible

  • @johnoconnor51 I saw him in MADISON, too! At The High Noon! AWESOME!

  • Seeing him TOMORROW NIGHT in Madison!!!!!!!

  • well you can't catch me/oh baby you can't catch me/cuz if you get too close...

    oh wait, wrong song.

  • nrbq - just a little bit similar - much better song though by mr mcmurty. very clever songwriter and he can rock it.

  • This song is good, but the music is totally ripped off from NRBQ's "Howard Johnson".

  • Everything about this song is BADASS.

  • We gonna have us a TIME, we gonna have us a time!

  • Banging that twelve string.....never could play those .Hell of a job.

Jesus, I've been amongst 'em and in all of those towns. Half the population lives on crystal or by selling it.

  • wow

  • wow!!! I gota learn this...

  • Best tune i have heard since Jimnmy

  • I never get tired of this song, James kicks ass on this one!!

  • @musicfog your right. I heard rwh do it long before McMurtry. See what assuming something gets you? Still awesome song.

  • @talktohimwitha2x4 James McMurtry wrote this, RWH does a cover of it, actually

  • @talktohimwitha2x4 was definitely James McMurtry that wrote this song.. RWH does a ... much less technical cover of it

  • Chickin' pickin' on an ol twelve string. Love it.

  • WOW! Dead on social commentary in a most incisve fashion! Is anybody doin this anymore?

  • Uncle Slatton, my kinda guy.

  • A fantastic song, suberbly performed! One of the best vids on youtube!!!!

  • James is one of my idols

  • James McMurtry is a STAR, and he powered me across the USA in 2009 in the RAAM

  • A real "human being", down to earth and intouch. I saw him at the Bluebird in Denver last summer. Great show and a class act. I get it and dig it too! Thanks for the reality check through your lyrics. I recommend ALL of James music, you'll never be disappointed. He reminds me of me when I was young and wish we could hang out and chill together. I got a few stories of my own. Just saying!

  • screw "oklahoma" this should be the state song. listen to it every time i hit the turnpike after missouri and only have 2 more hours to go.

  • I'm still looking for his tuning on this one. any ideas guitar players? what a great song

  • @KtomcatChas Double drop D (DADGBD) with capo on 2nd fret, song key is E. Make a partial D chord form on strings 3 & 2 with I and R fingers, hit pull-downs with middle finger on bass strings 5th fret (watch a lot of vids). He uses these moves on a number of rockin' songs in D and E. Basically it stays on E for 3 bars, then a G to A turnaround move on the 4th bar, repeat, 2/4 feel. You have to really keep that right hand movin' and remember the words. Good luck HTH!

  • @joeloftusblues Thanks! I was just watching this and wondered the same thing on the tuning. I thought that was it but it's nice to know ahead of time and just get after it.

Timing has got to be a bitch singing that till you REALLY know it!

My wife is gonna so hate this song before I get it down pat.

    Merry Christmas.

  • It's such a shame, the American idol zombies will never know J.M.

They are missing out on a REAL deal..

  • maybe the best to come out of oklahoma

  • @jcs2l75 umm, woody guthrie? chet baker? but yeah, he's good.

  • What tuning is he using??? I'm dyin to figure it out!!

  • 'this one goes out to the first united crystal methodist church of oklahoma' FUCK YESSIR! GET THOSE LEGS TWISTIN ROUND LIKE CRAZED CLOCKWORK!!!

  • this is the best of this song choctaw bingo without the band, wow does he know how to play that guitar and the grimaces are some of his best, i have seen him live twice in eugene oregon and he is a legend and the best story teller of our times.

  • LOVE this. First I'd hurt of James McMurtry... looking forward to finding out more...

  • This guy knows how to get down

  • Amazing lyrics, tight guitar playing.

  • Thanks for the video, James. It kicks ASS!!! You are the best lyricist alive today IMO.

  • Lyrical storytelling, kick ass!

  • Browning Automatic Rifle

  • Back to the BAR,in the pacific theatre in WWII,the Japanese would wait for the emphatic sound of a BAR clip being ejected,,,,,,,and rush the rifleman between reclips,so the US grunts learned a little trick!!!They caried an empty clip and would fire a few rounds and toss the empty clip to the ground...the sound would bring an onslaught of enemy...haha...the clip in the BAR was not empty and ejected, the sound of the empty clip was a great trick..to "bring em on in a rush...alas..EZ kills!

  • @cubensis4059 you have the BAR mixed with the M1 Garand Friend.

  • My Uncle raised the flag on Iwo Jima..2 tours in wwII,2 tours in Korea....and a tour in Nam..all I can go by is his words.I would hope that a professional killer knew what gun he was shooting,6 round BAR....before the 20 round clip!!!When the Garand arrived it was still NOT his choice.

Porter you know your guns man...so some trivia...what did every kid in vietnam write home and ask for???hint...was not issued by the U.S military.

  • @cubensis4059 Toll house Cookies?? I don't know, but i'm perplexed by your Incredible Uncle who raised the flag on Iwo in 1945, than had the courage to fight 2 more wars for 20-30 years, quite an impressive service career ;)

  • @cubensis4059 they didnt have tours in ww2 you servered until you were wounded and returned to the states. So lemme guess he prefred the 6 round bolt action springfield. the BAR only had 20 round mags

  • @PorterRP9 the M1 had 8 round stripper clips i think he meant the springfield

  • @ford762 the m1 didnt have stripper clips, a stripper clip just holds the bullets, it is where the shells are pushed into the rifle, leaving the clip behind, striping the clip, and where did you get 6 rounds in a springfield? maybe if you carry one in the chamber, but it is known as a 5 round rifle, you dont count whats in the chamber

i dont know if you was messing wit cubensis, because he removed his comment, but yes, no tours in ww2, you served until wars end, killed, or badly wounded

  • @ford762 the m1 had what is known as a block clip

  • @cubensis4059

you're thinking of an M1 Garand, not a BAR

  • I love this tune, original, pure Americana!

  • enjoy

    McMurtry and McMurtry

    each

    tell a good story

  • its not the 50 hmg it the 50 bmg if your gonna correct somrbody get it right

  • fuck suck gobble nibble chew im a viking..............how boutyou//???

  • Baxter springs is one hell raisin mother fucka

  • Love this line from above "Texas is one of 3 states that are in the black" - that is because for thier school budget they sent $120/per student to each school district from the Obama stimulus money!!!

Tarant county, Fort Worth being the county seat gets more federal money than any ohter county besides two! They love that federal money.

  • I sure like him, he is probly a charcter

  • THE BAR had 6 round clip and a 30.06 projectile.I love a BAR,,,shot a hole in a truck with one,,,lol.....I love this song,I listen to it every morning,I can relate

  • During the war they had 20 round mags.

  • no it didnt it had 20 round, unless your thinkin about the huntin version.

  • moron, there is a BAR and there is a BAR for hunting, like the one you used. Thankfully, the entire gun is so long that rather than putting the barrel under your chin. Thank the lord for long assed rfles, saves our children from blowing off their chins. The Army Bar, used a twenty round clip and a hell of a recoil spring, made by John Browning one big assed gun designer, he delivered the HMG-50 which carries his name, not to mention the M-1 rifle, called by Gen Patton the "god of battle"

  • @bigsoxfan2 J.M.Browning did not design the M1 That was John C. Garand (hence its name the M1 "Garand") And the HMG-50 is actually called the Browning M2. Also there is the M1918(A1, A2) BAR (military) and the B.A.R./ B.A.R. II (modern sporting rifle, nothing in common with the other BAR other than name). And its not the length of the rifle that "saves kids", if someone is determined they can work around a long barrel. Teach your kids how to handle firearms and they will be safe no matter what.
