hey jarde, i was wondering, whats the best buy fish eye lense i cant get for Nikon d3100? i love to soot bmx and skating photos. thanks ahead of time.
Jared, I think Im struggling with using a 2.8 and depth of field loss. I do see some people still getting decent depth of field at 2.8 but not sure why that is. Hyperfocal length maybe? I would like to see something about DOF on this level not just the simple explanation but something that goes into distance and how it affects DOF
Where's Greg? I think it's better to have Greg on the show than to have 2 persons having the same positive views on the pictures. This way we can all learn from mistakes.
I have the d3100 and love it. I was wondering what where the other settings besides the iso, f/stop and shutter speed? As in what were the focus modes and metering?
Nice discussion, my only thing is the subject. I cant quite catch what interesting about him, just looks like some how he is detached from his surroundings and is just some tatooed guy smoking who enjoys smoking and likes body art.
I use bounce flash all the time... If you do it right it looks like natural room lighting, because the light is bouncing off of the ceiling where it normally comes from in a room anyways. I bought a $130 flash so I could use my 2 existing lenses instead of spending $1500 on a f2.8 zoom. I haven't been in a situation where I felt I needed that f2.8 when I could use my flash. Then again, if I had the money and the need for a nice lens I would get one.
Fro why don't you use the flash bounced off the ceiling ??? It could help you lower your ISO and still able to zoom in at different F stops !!! Any particular reason ???
@thumelen the point of the original shoot was to show how you can take nice portrait shots with the most basic gear. watch the other vid for background.
@thumelen because bouncing off the ceiling does not always look that good, you end up with a brightly lit top of the head and a shadowed face area. That and to me unless your going to do a full light set up its going to look pretty plain.
Fo, no, FRO SHO! I got a 28mm 2.8 vivitar ais lens for my d3000 and automatically started getting the shots I missed so dearly from my Pentax ME Super with a 50 1.2 and 28 2.8, lovin' it!
Believe it or not the sony dslr a230 is a good beginner dslr. It's cheaper and will do the same things except for live view and video, but all of the basic functions you would expect a dslr to have.
Jared, I am soooooo happy to see you put down the 2.8 or nothing argument.
2.8 is the best and there is nothing that beats those fine lenses, but kit lenses can get the job done. I could be discouraging for beginners if you tell them that they will ahieve good results ONLY if they have a 2.8
@kauxkaux The 2.8s are only used for certain situations that are able to have a shallow depth of feel. One part of that argument I do support is being able to change the aperture which kit lens can't do. Beginners in my opinion shouldn't lice on the kit lens, but they can get good shots still with the kit lens.
Hey Jared, when shooting portraits do you select a specific focus point, like the central point, and use that point to focus and then recompose or do you let the camera do everything? I always wonder which is the best way to select focus when shooting portraits.
I've been shooting full manual since about 2007 when I got a Kodak 4MP "DSLR."
I found it so much harder to shoot on that thing then my Canon 60D. Now, I was shooting M right out of the box, and it really wasn't too hard.
I honestly think, that if you want to be a better photographer, go invest in either a old film camera, or a really old cheap DSLR. It'll make you think about ever shot, instead of just snapping off frames. Try it out!
You mention in the video that you owned & used a Nikkor 17 -55 F2.8 lens. How does it compare with Sigma's new 17- 50 OS F2.8 lens you have been recently using. Reading many reviews I get the impression the Nikon lens is a bit sharper than the Sigma especially on the edges and wide open. I think the extra 5mm telephoto length on the Nikon is quite an advantage when used as a portrait lens. As you have direct experience in using both, your views on the 2 lenses would be very useful. (D7000 user)
@Gordonafloat I have viewed your review of the Sigma in which you do say the Nikkor is better; but you don't spell out the full advantages of the more expensive main brand lens. VR would be nice but to my mind is not essential as I usually have a tripod/ monopod with me for stationary subjects in low light. Would be great if you could borrow a 17- 55 from Allan's to do a full review on. I have heard that the latest DX sensors actually make the 17-55 high quality optics even more relevant now.
@swagonmystep2345 I had this problem, I got the Nikon D7000 It's cheaper and just as good as the 7D in some ways the 7D is better and others the D7000, I got mine and love it, great ISO can shoot to about 5000 but obv expect noise shutter speed of 6, nice and fast, its heavy but not too heavy, magnesium alloy body with weather and DUST sealing :). Also with the extra money you can save get some good glass. 50mm 1.8G i think the new one. yeah hope this helped.
Thanx for all the info! Bought a 35mm 1.8 today for my D3100 - it shows a lot more detail than the kit-lens. Just have to be careful with the sometimes low depth-of-field and the missing VR! But I guess, I will make great shots with it! And in addition: it´s a healthy lens, it keeps you moving! ;-)
@theraginggiblets Still figuring it out! When I´m shooting RAW and tweaking the files with View NX2 getting very nice shots too! Using the 35mm 1.8 I realized, that I, if at all, need not add much sharpening later. The image is either tack-sharp to begin with or it has motion blurr because I didn´t watch my shutter-speed. I´m mainly using it in AV to keep an eye on the F-Stops (DOF!! It´s not a wide-angle-lens and the D3100 is not a point-and shoot, I always have to remember that!.. ;-)

i completely agree. i bought the canon 50mm f1.8 lens for $90 and, despite its price, I use it way more than my 18-125 mm kit lens (Canon 60d).
