Was this taken from BBC 2's telethon "Goal TV" way back in the last 80's early 90's? Used to have a recording of that but lost it somehow. Quality match. Tigana...Tigana...Platini...GOAL!
Amazing match and it seems that the game is not played on this level any more : true it is more physical but that's about it (run & gun), less and less skill, creativity and intelligence in the game.
@MeMrecious you want a classic? try Portugal-England (3-2 too) during Euro 2000, JUST EPIC, considered by many as one of the best official games from Portugal in modern football, of course there was recently Portugal-Spain 4-0 but it was just a friendly game.
I think that France just was lucky in that game. I explain: Nené played the game and didn´t scored a goal??? You must listen to me: Nené was a terrific striker!!! And in that game we saw a big competition with two magicians: Platini and Chalana ("Chalanix").
@MartiW Portugal, two times semi finalist at Fifa world cup, one 3th place and one 4th place, two times semi finalist and one final at euro cups, and ireland...?
This has to be one of the greatest international matches of all time. I was a 16 year old youth at the time and it was on my mind for months after. Breathtaking football from both sides. Thrills and spills galore. THIS is what i'd call the perfect advertisment for the beautiful game
@MeMrecious Unfortunately for Portugal they always are the beaten team in the classic matches. Nothing to show for being sporadically good. Forever the bridesmaid.
This clip is from BBC 2's Goal TV: more than five hours of football with one five-minute break - for Chile v Italy from 1962, the famous 'Battle of Santiago' in which off-the-ball incidents easily outnumbered on- the-ball incidents.
@MeMrecious But this is nonsense. Which classic match was Portugal involved in in 2006? It was anti-football (v the Dutch, v the English, v Angola). As was Figo's walking off the pitch in 2002. Most other tournaments, Portugal didn't even qualify. They are a decent, but ultimately average team.
Most classic match I've seen? Romania - Argentina, 1994. Portugal weren't even in that tournament - no doubt a conspiracy against them (or perhaps they just didn't qualify...).
@MeMrecious Who says I support England? In any case, I don't know what that has to do with the fact that Portugal plays the filthiest football around. The 7:0 was indeed impressive, but then it was against North Korea; let's see if they can play with the big boys. I doubt it.
@MeMrecious Nuno Gomes was sent off for assaulting the referee and a second player was banned subsequently. It was the filthiest performance by a team I've ever seen (and then the Portuguese played the Dutch in 2006 and managed to outdo themselves yet again).
I was at this match. Best match I've ever seen live and you can have your Platini but Jean Tigana was the man of the match. A midfield dynamo who ran miles.
@TheMirjana is difficult to tell you because there was a super team... i think this is the team more difficult to tell you this... i can tell you that probably Gomes, Chalana, Nené, Jordão and our great goalkeeper Bento.
TIGANA, TIGANA, PLATINI, GOAL!!! I remember being 16 years old and leaping off the sofa and rolling on the floor to this goal . . . and I'm English!! The sheer pace of this game is astonishing. The passing is beautiful. Awesome. Thanks for posting this. Absolutely briiliant. Let hope the World Cup delivers . . .
@MeMrecious - so that would be why the linesman flagged Fernandez offside early on, aye, right. Portugal usually beat themselves so many times in major tournaments that the other team doesn't have to cheat.
I remember ! it was amazing !! and there was a little boy on the side whitch give the ball at the players : it was...

@MeMrecious It was hand-to-ball, that's why he gave a penalty.
I'm not sure what Henry's handball has got to do with it, seeing that it happened over nine years later (and I'm not French).

@MeMrecious I've rarely seen a clearer handball than in 2000. It was the correct decision --> penalty and a sending off.
