I actually prefer this to the Exile version. And it's not just because it's different and I've heard the other a million times. I just like the beat and bassline a whole lot more here. Plus Watts and Wyman actually play them on this recording as opposed to Jimmy Miller and Mick Taylor on the Exile version. I'm also not big on all the organs and stuff on the Exile version, I mean, it doesn't sound bad, but I think this sounds more like The Stones. I still love Shine A Light though.
First recorded in March, 1968, then a second take was made in March, 1969. Mick Jagger wrote the song about Brian Jones, after he died it was rewritten and retitled "Shine A Light", and released in that form. "Get A Line On You" itself was never released.
Vocals : Mick Jagger Electric Guitar: Keith Richards Slide Guitar: Brian Jones -or- ? Bass: Bill Wyman Drums: Charlie Watts -or- Jimmy Miller Keyboards: Leon Russell
as much as i hate to say, I dont think this was meant for Brian, although it really should be, its the least Mick could have done after the way they treated him... but i think its about Keith, Mick never liked Brian! although i still resemble this to Brian everytime
@rafaultimate69 as much as i want to believe you.. and still is Brians song in my eyes... can you honestly see Mick and Keith being that heartfelt to do this song for him?? they didn't even turn up for his funeral! they kicked him out his very own band that he created..... i think its us fans of brian that have dedicated this to brian.....
@Spiderrico123 ok just read what's on this site and you'll see it's for Brian: songfacts and search there for shine a light, and read it.
And it's obvious it's for Brian, they did liked Brian. And they only had to kick Brian out of the band cause he was in no conditions to continue recording and touring due to his drug problems!!And yes he created the band, but he created it with Mick and Keith, and it was time for Mick and Keith to lead the band, replacing Brian, who was in an awful shape.
@rafaultimate69 Brian was replaced because he could not get a Visa to play in The USA for The Stones 69 tour due to his drug convictions in England. Brian was jamming with Mitch Mitchell and had several things working and even had some live gigs in the works to play in Germany...Brian owed some people some money and they ended up Killing him by holding him under water..look up Frank thoroughgood and you can find out what really happened to Brian.....
@goonchistaw I have always understood this to be about Jones, given the timeline of the original words (1969). I think that's Mick Taylor on there. But, I could see it applying equally for Keith.
@DWGarvin i got most of my information from a book by bill janowitz & andy johns
simply called exile on main st & it explains the origins of the songs , it doesn't mention brian @ all, as for whose playing, it sounds like mick taylor . but as you point out it could be richards

According to Wikipedia this version was recorded in October '69, and Mick Taylor had joined the group by then. (correcting my earlier post).

The keno.org website lists Mick Taylor as the only guitarist on Shine A Light. I assume it's the same with this version.
