Ah, the American Can Corp next to the Jersey Lilly souvenir shop that made the cans for Pearl, Billy Beer, J.R. Beer and dozens of others. Were they sold to China, too?
A lot of it is not there any more. The warehouse is gone. The Judge Roy Bean replica Jersey Lilly shop appears to be gone. Looks like the trolley cars are gone. The main building looks gutted.
I hate it how YT eats comments. I'm sure I had something to say earlier on. In lack of the bring-back machine. Your story made me delve deeper into what would be sufficient to live on, a healthy, happy simplicity.
Yeah. Those folks told me that there are still bums and winos in the neighborhood, but my observation was that the bums are better dressed now. The "cafe" that used to be Pearl's tractor-trailer garage is actually a culinary school. Pearl Brewery used to be the starting point of San Antonio's Cinco De Mayo float parade which have me the catbird seat from the roof of my warehouse 'home.'
That 100-and-something year-old brewery had lots of ghosts and I got a picture of one. Also found a Nazi connection up in one of the dome anterooms. I hope the Chinese like the national beer of Texas. It'd be a shame for them to sell it to Botswana or Yemen.
I used to sing the Pearl beer song when I mowed the yard back in 1969. "Everybody does it in his own way, doing what he does, the best he can. And when you've made it, make it Pearl beer, and when you've made it, make it good Pearl beer. . . ." Another classic video, marquisdejolie. I can picture you driving around that couch.
The place came with hot and cold running winos since there was no lock on the door. And since employees were allowed, even encouraged, to drink on the job, some of those guys would stumble in and sleep it off on my couch. I miss Pearl.
The beer was okay and it was free to the employees. They were encouraged to drink it on the job. I had a lot of happy, staggering, pot-bellied co-workers there.
Cool tour.

Sometimes I got dressed on the way to work. If I overslept, the guy I was relieving just shouted from the guardshack into my window.

Awesome, no need for a phone that way.

Interesting you ran into the new owners. Not many people trusting enough to let a stranger check it out. Did you give them your YouTube info?

Naw. I kinda keep my Youtube follies a secret from people out in the real world. Wouldn't want anybody to think I was a nut or something.
