I would say boyd probably isnt in the top 20. I honestly dont think he is that skilled of a voilin/fiddle player (although I do love his jam style and unique sound). But certainly Dave, Stefan, and Carter are absolute beasts when it comes to technicality...Love me some DMB!
They all are. Coffin, Tinsley, Ross, Beauford, and Reynolds are all probably in the top 20 on th e planet at their skill. Dave learned it early. Yea, you gotta be good...but surround yourself with complements. Ironically hes probably the least talented musically. Ok voice, very good guitar player. However, phenomenal song writer and lyricist and probably the most likeable person ive ever heard in concert. Hes funny, entertaining, spontaneous, original, creative...never condescending
Man its possible to mis someone I never met because their artistic expression influenced or impressed something on me that I either had been lacking or had finally received after a long time of searching. Man, not trying to sound to philosophical but I know its possible. I'm with you on that one. Ive seen DMB on only two occasions with definite plans to see their 2012 tour and both times I walked away shaking my head nearly exasperated and damn near emotionally drain but sooo fulfilled. TOUCHE'
Friends ask me . Are you a dmb fan ? What do you think of them ? And i answer the way i have for the last 16 years . I love a lot of new acts out there today . Some are very talented . But nobody touches the dmb . In all areas of a written song , and of a stage performance . They have been the best of their contemporarys for years .
@sanasteve In April, 2009 I saw DMB for the 8th time and even though LeRoi wasn't there it was somehow the best show of theirs I've ever seen. I can't remember what song it was exactly, but I had to wipe away a little water from the eyes, ya know. Since he passed I've asked myself on several occasions, "How is it possible for someone to miss somebody they never even met?" I don't have the answer to that but I'm here to tell ya it's possible, that's for sure.
Obviously Jeff isn't Le Roi, but good lord, this was outrageous. The death of such a tallent is a huge loss, but without a doubt they found the one guy who could possibly have replaced him.
Simply amazing! It blows my mind how carter's able to play such an agressive drum without taking over jeffs solo. The guys practically playing a solo that fully supports the real solo. What a rare gift and what a well working band.

I discovered the band lastly at PBS Vermont, I liked at the first seconds, genious, brilliant saxophonist and Dave Matthews he is just a so genuine guy, I love.

What an Animal that Jeff Is!! He plays really good!! They Really enjoy their work.. it is the best album ever. If i have to choose i will choose, Btcs, Crash and big whiskey. The Dmb attitude is back!
Jeffs last name is spelled wrong.....shoulda been "Coughin"............cuz his playing is siiiick! He's a great compliment to what Leroi had established in the band. I'm 27. Favorite band since 4th grade. Nice close ups on Tims solos.
is the flautist from bela fleck and the flecktones? I love how people from dmb and the flecktones are good friends. the two bands couldnt be and more different but they mix so well. I would even bet that futureman and carter would make an incredible duo. that would be worth watching
I respect all of these guys for their talent and dedication to the craft. Jeff Coffin is indeed a beast on the sax, but I would have to say that if anyone controls the band musically during a live show, it's Carter.
This is impressive work by Jeff Coffin... it doesn't surprise me though, this guy is a SOLID musician! you want to hear him blow you away, check out his solo on "You Never Know" from last year's Alpine Valley gigs. He instills a lot of control in his solos, much like Roi did... control of energy, control of length of jam, emotion of jam, etc... he even gets Dave to hold off on the outtro vox for another group of progressions to finish making his statement; check out YNK 7/19/2009
@ttttupim I have to agree. I LOVE LeRoi and I think he was a FABULOUS saxophonist and I miss him terribly. However, there is just no denying that Coffin is the best in the world. I almost wish the two were in the band together!
Well, when a musical part has already been prepared (LeRoi created the sax groove) it's much easier to create a better solo, and unfortunately we aren't able to hear what LeRoi would have come up with.
@Arminian100 best saxophone player in the world? i think there are enough sax players in the world to say there isn't a single best. its art. hes definitely a top level musician, better than leroi technically. but i still love teh way leroi played. coffin's work with the flecktones is really inspiring though.
