Its funny. If a 10-20kt bomb went off in NYC today by the hands of a Islamic group, We would think about building a mosque near the area a few years later.
Yes, of course. A dozen! cities were bombed but the USA are devastated from coast to coast. In the 1950ies! And the house would be completely destroyed despite the fact being located 50 miles away from NY and from ground zero. Not even a 20 Mt. air burst would destroy a well-built house at this distance. Your "estimations" are far more unrealistic than this movie.
Get at least some basic informations about nuclear weapons before writing such bloody rubbish!
All those survivalists tell you to buy a gun - I thought it wa for self defense - Never occured to me that the guns were for use on the HYSTERICAL FEMALES
That is some seriously bad writing at times, along with some really over the top hammy acting. And if there was a nuke, no way would a warden who had any kind of knowledge about radiation be out in the fallout...
The movie reminds me of "leave it to beaver" meets "the day after", with a bit of the sensibility of "reefer madness" thrown in for good measure.
Interesting Flick. Typical of movies made in the 50's. In the movie they constantly spoke of the country that attacked America with an Atomic Bomb, however, they continuously referred to them as "The Enemy".
Yup, it was on ABC, and after the nukes scene, the rest of it was show without commercials. After the show, Peter Jennings had a "town hall meeting" concerning nukes and the arms race and how living under the shadow of the bomb has affected them.
Best atomic movies made are Day After and Testament.
@Wafflepudding Okay, yes, I don't know what I was thinking Threads in sheer "reality" in it's scope beat out both The Day After and Testament, so it would be
@CrudeDude: "'The Day After' is also very scary! Was banned in the U.S."
No, it was not banned. That's ridiculous. It aired on commercial broadcast TV. Our class watched a video tape recording of it several days later in civics class. Somewhat controversial, yes; banned, no.
LOL There were not as many things that would be effected by EMP but I did notice the radio and radio station kept working. Clearly their cell phones and PCs were fried because I didn't see a single one. :) LOL
@callofdutyzombie95 I was wondering about that myself! Maybe the radio was a tube model? Then again, the EMP would have taken care of the power plants.
Does anyone think it a bit too convenient that she just happened to be in the basement( a known shelter) when the sirens went off and the blast occured?
Dont you mean fiesta ware Oh and she never made her "appointment" to get her hair done and worse of all those damn commies made her miss her soaps on the radio!
The best part is when they're playing music on the CONELRAD frequency. Do you think this would be the case in the event of a real attack. It would either be continuous information or silence in between messages to prevent triangulation by the enemy, which is the whole idea of consolidating the CONELRAD system to two frequencies anyway (640 and 1240 AM). For those who don't know, CONELRAD was replaced by the EAS on radio (the FAX like beeps you hear once a week).
@mpwelk They replaced it with EBS first. It had its own set of problems, including the time in 1971 when they sent out an attack authenticator word via teletype on accident, and stations began signing off and directing you to EBS primary stations for information on the attack. EAS replaced EBS which replaced CONELRAD.
This was, ironically, the final broadcast of "THE MOTOROLA TV HOUR", an alternate-week dramatic anthology series [with "THE UNITED STATES STEEL HOUR"] appearing on ABC's Thursday night schedule [9:30-10:30pm(et)] in the 1953-'54 season. This episode originally aired live on May 18, 1954; the Motorola commericals were omitted. Incidentally, "next week's 'U.S. STEEL HOUR' presentation" {mention of it also omitted, at 49:50} was "The Great Chair", starring Gary Merrill and Lori March...
Yikes, this is like the 1950s version of "The Day After!"

@MrJacMac1986 a-bombs back then were not as powerful as they are today. 50 miles would had been far enough to exscape the blast zone.

Technically true, but planning for the H went way back to Teller and Fermi in 42. They got the idea out of Hans Bethe's research.
