  • Haha I love reading these comments after watching the episodes, you guys are just great.

  • ahahah soooo happy the actor playing her brother is the same who plays Frank Churchill in Emma ! I just watched it and was so fond of him haha !!

  • Although I am sure John and Margaret will be very happy together, their marriage will have a couple of problems to sort through. John's mother and sister don't really accept or like Margaret and considering that Thornton is a bit of a mama's boy, this could lead to quite a few sparks flying. It's nothing that can't be dealt with though, and both of them are definitely capable of working it out. :)

  • Love the way he gives her that piercing gaze at 5:45 when he says, "Here in the North, we value our independence." Sent shivers through my spine, it did. :)

  • It seems like in each episode Thorton is shown as a slighter friendlier person to his workers!!

  • Heavens above, Mr. Thornton is handsome...

  • Oh Mr. Thorton! I want you in my life!

  • great music

  • If you read the book by Gaskell, you will understand the charactor of Mr. Thornton much better. Of one side he is a tough brute and other side he is so caring and affectionate. Richard Armitage is perfect. This series does not entirely follow the novel.

  • "i would like to play the overbearing master"

Yeh, I bet you would hahah

  • @fdtk77 he says he would like to, but he doesn't-- he doesnt dictate what they do with their money or in their spare time. It's a redeeming quality, which highlights that though he is strict and stern in the area of work, he does not overstep his boundaries. He also imagines that ms hale thinks he would be an overbearinh master and it's a turn of phrase where he says he's sorry to disappoint her.

  • i don't understanwhy he says "i would like to play the overbearing master". english is my second language so I'm probably missing the point there. i've looked for the meaning it's something like domineering or authoritative master and it really doesn't make sense, except that it sounds really thrilling when Mr. Thornton says it(:

  • you guys think that that is sexy when he steps forward? i thought it was creepy as hell

  • @lordsmashrulz Creepy? I thought it was cute.

  • Hell yeah he'd like to play the master. :P

  • I love so very much the way she says "your mother has given me the number of her dr." then he asked in the most intoxicating worried voice I've ever heard "are you ill?!?" love it!!

  • Alright the man has a commanding presence, most arrogantly so, I'd say from his features, but come on, melting, fainting, knees buckling etc?

He seems like the type of person you could only enjoy quarreling and bickering with. He looks like a cynic, and trust me, cynics are otherwise not uplifting company.

And before the attacks start, I've drawn as much insubstantial conclusions as you have, based merely on his looks and role in the show, so let the discussion be in the spirit of fun.

  • @mysterychemistry I see what you mean. But sparing is sexy ;D

  • @marybarton2011 no doubt. and I'm first in line for that, but if the only sweetness is to be found in sparing and he's just an inflexible hardened cynic after that? would you want that?

  • @mysterychemistry Being a huge cynic myself, I have to say I really would like it. I read the book, Thornton is actually as much of an idealist as Margaret, it kind of shows in his treatment of children in this series. I think he's the bigger softie of the two :)

  • @marybarton2011 well, spiffy. he's a fictional character. and he does have redeeming qualities. but in real life? his cynicism could weigh you down.

  • @mysterychemistry Perhaps. But I might not complain if he came right out of the screen hehe. Read the book, you will see, he's not to very bad.

  • @marybarton2011 well, even if he wanted to be his cynical self, the writer wouldn't let him. wait, are you telling me that you are charmed by the actor because you identify him with the character he plays? now, I understand all the swooning going on in here. :D

  • @mysterychemistry RA is perfect as Thornton because he matches Gaskell's physical description of the character. But in this case, I was thinking about Thornton's cynical personality. I do think RA is beautiful but I am saying that Thornton, the character, as Gaskell made him is a softie. Really. The book will convince you. Thornton is like Darcy, a little more expressive.

  • I so wish I could buy the score to this show. It's so very beautiful.

  • @4:45 If I turned around to see him standing there...I would just melt. Right there.

  • Wow i thought it would be boring to watch this a second time but it's suprisingly nice. And yes it's so cute when he says: are you ill? Damn this man is fine oeff!!

  • Men, please watch. And learn. THIS is what women want.

  • That man would fucking dominate any woman in bed. What a hottie.

  • Margeret is f*cking beatuiful per say.

  • i love when he says "you're ill?"

  • opposites surely do attract

  • he must be what? 6 feet 2 or 3? OMG he is HOT

  • @Persiansweetcat1 IMDB says 6'2"

  • @47thUsername HOT :)

  • Episode 1 part 6 is missing from the playlist. Make sure you don't miss it!

  • aww the way he looks when she mentions the doctor and thinks shes ill :') this programme just does not get old for me he's gorgeous :P

  • All the women who say men are pervy need to read comments about Mr Thornton posted on here by other Women. It would seem women are just as pervy lol.

  • @shaqdaddy11 Two words: Period. Costume. We're suckers for it ;)

  • @bowtoyoursensei0 well im glad you admitt your pervyness for period costume's lol.

  • @shaqdaddy11 Some call it pervyness, some call it passion. As a historian, I take the high road :p

  • @bowtoyoursensei0 Lol women, always so at ease with words.

  • I love how he's looking at her like he's so surprised to see her converse with the workers unlike fanny and all them uppity females. He's so mesmerized by this woman. Out of all the woman in milton, he's in love with her. yes.

  • And where did that cotton for those mills come from...

    (cut to Roots)

Kunta Kinte: Now Kinte be choppin off MASSA'S foot!

  • @Nonamearisto wtheck are you talking about?

  • @Nonamearisto The cotton was imported from the American South to Britain (among other places).

  • You can be my overbearing master anytime, Mr. Thornton. Please and thanks.

  • most beautiful opening with the shots and music. love love love. <3

  • "I would have liked to play the overbearing master."

Oh my...it looks like Mr. Thornton is into the kinky stuff...

  • "You won't stand a chance - there's loads of girls after him" Haha, If only Bessy knew

  • I love the scene @ 1:30 because to me you see a little more of Mrs Thornton's character. She's stern b/c of a lifetime of hardship but she values the love mothers have for their children. It's shown in this little action and the way she tries fiercely protect her son. That's why this movie is so good... subtle character development for every character, not just margret and thornton.

  • The way he says "You're ill?" and immediately steps forward with concern... I just fell in love.

  • @deadzonefan13 I know! I thought he was going to feel her forehead...<3

  • @goddessofmanga Have you ever worn a corset made especially for you? You might be surprised how comfortable one can be. I can fetch my dropped items off the floor with no problem. No reason to tho, if a willing gentleman is around. :D (But don't tightlace. That takes practice and time.)

  • I like how she writes that she has seen hell and it is white, then Thornton comes walking through. Does that make him the devil then? ha

  • Love the sound track , gives me shivers! :D

  • OK SO FAR I KIND OF LIKE THIS

    I REALLY LOVE MR.THORNTON NOW

BUT NOT MORE THAN CAPTAIN WENTWORTH

    FROM PERSUASION

  • @75uscan yes i am absoloutely in smitten with captain wentworth! but thorton is veryy handsome also.

  • Isn't that the girl who played Anne Boleyn in the Tudors?

  • goodness gracious the music is stunning

  • most profound words 2:23 Mr. Thornton to the other Mill owner "It's their lives and our livelihood your playing with"

  • the industrial revolution - the beginning of the end......

  • anyone else thinks he looks like abe lincoln??

  • @x0x0nicoliex04 ha ha ha, I was thinking "he reminds me of someone", you got it!!

  • His face when he thinks she might be ill...oh my!

  • He has such a height over margaret. It is quite romantic.

  • @claritycentral ooh someone else who thinks height plays a role in that <3 :)

  • @claritycentral being tall is romantic? :/ wtf

  • @johnmair A woman knows LOL.

  • @claritycentral its not romantic...i hate being short...u can't look into ppls faces :(

  • It is so freaky how he jst appears.

  • OH MY GOOOOOD MR. THORNTON'S VOICE IS SO DAMN SEXY! ♥

  • I love Margaret! Her independence is so attractive.

  • his nose is so sharp....

  • so has anyone else freaked out as much as i have when the heard richard armitage was gonna be in the hobbit movie?

  • @movieluvr69 hahah yeah me too, he's such a tall handsome man and he's going to play as a hobbit, a dwarf people?!? I can't imagine how he looks like

  • @movieluvr69 Yes! But how could they cast him as a dwarf, of all things? And his voice is so much like Sean Bean's (the guy who played Boromir in LOTR). I can't wait to see what they do with Richard!

  • @movieluvr69 I'm actually excited. I live in America and I'm a huge fan of Richard Armitage. I think him being in this film will give him the well-deserved exposure he needs in the states!

  • At 6:03... "Sorry Miss Hale, i would like to play the overbearing master... " My response? "oh, yes please!"

  • @3ducks4me LOOOOOL

  • omg when i saw this silhouette at the end of the 1 ep this man is ooooooooooooooohhhhhhhh great

  • Gosh, this Richard Armitage is a great actor. I can't believe I've never heard of him, or this miniseries before. He doesn't have to say much, you can see everything in his face. I agree, we don't see this kind of actors in America. I think the difference is a lot of British actors actually went to drama school, and not got into acting just because a pretty face.

  • @boya307 Right. That used to be the case with most American actors; the great ones of the past studied for the stage and screen. I wish that would be the trend again. I also wish Hollywood could stop being cheap and let the best writers come forward instead of living on remakes and comic books.

  • Hey that's Rupert Evans who plays Frank Churchill in Emma!

  • l would like to play the overbearing master...hehe love the way he says that ;p

  • Mrs. Thornton fits perfectly, she is awesome. And John is gorgeous!

  • Ahhh, the sudden flash of care and worry that spread across his face when he said "You're ill" - I'll just go ahead and melt now :)

  • Thank You soooo much for posting. Its my first time seeing this and I'm loving it. Thanks AGAIN.

  • love Richard Armitage in robin hood!!!!

  • o, i love this so much, one of my favorite of BBC series

  • When he says that he "would like to play the overbearing master", is it my imagination, or does he have kind of a mischievous little smile? As if he was thinking about another way of "playing" with Margaret...

  • Where have I seen the actress playing "Bessie" before????? It's driving me crazy.

  • @marginallymental bleakhouse? she plays esther, the main girl

  • @miriorodergo, yes! Yes she did! And she married the wrong guy, IMHO!

  • thornton's mama's voice haha

  • There are a few little scenes missing from this version of North and South which are on my DVD. After Mrs Thornton tells the mother she can keep her place if she can get another child there in an hour, Mr Thornton tells Mrs Thornton she knows how to run the mill as well as he does.

  • @xxAmyyy Yeah! I've been noticing scenes missing throughout! I haven't purchased this DVD yet - which DVD did you purchase? I want to be sure I get the full version.

  • @ruairaidh sorry for taking so long to respond. I got the regular region 2 one from amazon. It cost about £5.

  • is that frank churchill???? her brother, i mean

  • @sugarbungie

yes it is-- that was my first thought when I saw him :)

  • @sugarbungie omg u mean from emma? i think it is! looks like him!

  • Mr. Thorton is really not that bad. Margaret's too hard on him at first.

  • 4:53 Mr Thornton was worried when he thought Margret was ill,aw bless :P

  • at 5:06 he remimded me a bit of Abraham Lincoln. lol ; )

  • @germangirl4017 omg when i saw his silhouette towards the end of the previous episode, it looks exactly like abraham lincoln!

  • when will the "love" part of the story start??

  • @salhaj100 Oh but it already has started! Hee hee. Just look how concerned he is when he thinks she might be ill. It's understated, but still there....

  • I love how panicked he sounds when she says she got the name of a doctor, such loveand care he has defiantly got that charm factor lol :)

  • @vixenvicky91 yeah,I noticed that too.He seems really worried about her health.

  • Mr. Thornten is so hot hot hot!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I agree!!!!

  • Thank you *very* much, indeed.

  • I love the BBC period dramas and discovered this one on a recommendation from Netflix so decided to give it a try. Wow! This quickly became my favorite since the Colin Firth version of P&P. Oh, and since everyone is commenting on the music, I love it too! The music is similar throughout except during the final moments of the series. Wait and see - you'll love it too :-)

  • I love the music

  • Poor Bessy!!! lol

  • the score is beautiful

  • I absolutely completely totally fantasically a-d-o-r-e period drama.

  • At 5:27 Margaret asks Mr T about how workers spend their money and their moral duty. What is she getting at? I don't get it? Why should an employer care how workers spend their money? I'm confused.....

  • She is a member of the lower gentry from the south of England, which traditionally had been very involved in social welfare efforts toward the poorer members of their parishes, etc. At the beginning she states she visits families in her father's parish, etc. Southern landowners worried about the morals of their tenants, farmers, etc.

  • Thank you very much for your explanation!

  • i found this show whilst listening to a music video by Amanda Marshal - Beautiful Goodbye, now I am hooked..line.. and sinker.... have to go and buy the series now.... thanks for uploading it.. I really enjoy these period dramas.... and Thornton being so devilishly handsome... well, that just makes it more enjoyable....;-)

  • lol i love how she says: "Your mother was kind enough to give me the name of a Doctor."

and he straighten's up and gets this protective/worried look on his face and in his body language then says: "You're ill?"

    So cute <3

  • @imnotlikeothergirls5 Yh! i was just thinking that! xD xxx

  • @imnotlikeothergirls5 I know. :) so sweet. he was probably thinking I just found her and now about to lose her. Dear Lord noooo!!!

  • That overbearing master line, hmmm, is it creepy that I find that kind of hot?

  • @adjectivesarecool : Na i thought that was incredibly hot as well lol!

  • I swear I´ve seen this series about 30 times! Yes, that´s how bad it is.. And I have it on DVD as well, mwhahahahaha!

My alltime favourite period drama. <3

  • I LOVE the music in this series :3

  • There is some reason for the way the mom talks to Margaret. Margaret is a snob. She puts on airs and thinks she knows everything. She has no idea how business and commerce work. If she knew anything, she would get what is going on.

  • i agree. Margaret is kind-hearted, but she is disregarding the business side of things... She waltz in like she knows everything. I do appreciate her considerations to the workers though, but before she can solve the problems, she need to hear from both sides and not so quick to judge on who's right and who's wrong. But Margaret is not perfect and i think that's why she's a likeable character cuz everyone has faults no matter how seemingly perfect they are on the outside.

  • Ok I have to say..I come back to this part for the music when I feel sad. Anyway, I read on wikipedia that BBC expected this to fail and it was one of their biggest series to date. That'll show em!

  • "YOU'RE ILL"

    LOOK AT HIS FACE! *sigh*

  • "I would like to play the overbearing master" whhhhyyy did I put that statement in the gutter?

I consider myself well educated, but when he said that with the little twinkle in his eye. My mind went right to a sexual fantasy! Ashamed...

  • kinda hating the mom. I mean gotta love her and her steel nature..but yeah hating her

  • i could fall in love with this movie just for the opening theme ;)

  • @olooshia Thats what I said on the last part lol!

  • sorry for doubling but then it just proves how grat the them is right? :)

  • Definately! I watched the sixth part of the first episode with the music probably ten times. It is just so great!

  • Do you know where to find the score for this series?

  • her brother is Frank Churchill!! haha

  • Can't they afford masks for the employees to cover their mouth, where does all the money goes then??

  • @Bufurzone i think they didn`t really care about the health, you know. i don`t think they saw them as other human being. the thinking of equals and stuff is modern. and i don`t know how far they know about how the dust was killing the workers

  • The opening music is truely beauiful. Can anyone tell me what it is?

  • it was written by Martin Phipps especially. He's the BBC equivalent to John Williams.

  • Thank you for posting this. We don't get these kinds of films in America. (No boobs? No explosions?) Art is dead in Hollywood.

  • it really is, thats why i love bbc!!

  • @1dumbbird I know this is so different from american movies..

  • @1dumbbird Because America has yet to figure out that true romance doesnt need teeny bop music, sex, and boobs lol. All we need is a good plot, a blossoming love, and some BEAUTIFUL MUSIC!

  • Some of us in America have realized it! I am an American down to the core, but I absolutely love BBC period dramas and such. I get so sick of the cliche "teeny bop" chick flicks!!

I am a huge fan of Austen, Dickens, and Gaskell!

Thank you BBC for making this and you lindamas1 for posting it!

  • Ditto.

  • same here! BBC is awesome

  • @icesk8ergal1123 Amen ! Me too. I hate that American channels don't show these shows. I have to come on youtube to watch them xl

  • @icesk8ergal1123 I completely agree....I'm American through and through but I love BBC Drama's...my mom and I both. They are so much more entertaining and well written than a lot of shows......thank you Dickens, Gaskell and Austen!

  • not to mention a smolderingly good looking leading man... ;)

  • Yes, that doesn't hurt : )

  • @jepenner

    Totally agree!

  • @jepenner god i flippin love him. he was amazing in Robin Hood <33

  • @jepenner Smoulderingly.

    Get a dictionary?

  • Comment removed

  • @talidina2 Would you really want to wear corsets ? I like to move around. P.S. I liked your comment though.

  • @talidina2 AGREED. men always look handsome dressed up like that and us girls always look better dressed up to!! and you just descibed everyones feelings for that man's hotness XD

  • @talidina2

aye aye Capitan! I couldn't have said it better myself!

  • @talidina2 lol! I must say I quite agree! if men would only dress like that!!! but people are to obsessed with comfort these days!!!

  • @MmeLucySnowe Men still dress like that it called a suit of clothes and if a man does not own a suit of clothes these days he is not a man. No purple, orange or yellow but a simple western Brooks Brothers style suit of clothes. PERIOD!!!!!!
