I know this trick! You use tape or lick your thumb and when you open your hand the item is gone...the item is behind you thumb, (Warning: This isnt a "CLOSE" up trick!)

Better than tape is a bead of wax on your thumbnail. I use surf wax. That way I can let them see the toothpick. Then I can push the toothpick into it before flicking my thumb back.
