@ThisBodyLikesMusic I've always been a fan of "Surf Music" and remember this song when it came out when I was a kid in '64 just as the Beatles appeared. Since then, I have always worried if there was "more to this song" than met the eye (or ear). My understanding is that this is a Cuban melody and commemorates the town where the Cuban Revolution was launched as well as where Teddy Roosevelt and his "Rough Riders" landed. I'd love to get a note for note transcript.
this song is as cuban as cigar is, but he plays the song with an spanish sound and it feels pretty good. never here of johnny fortune before. He is great.
Regretfully, Johnny passed away in 2006. I was lucky enough to know him (playing drums alongside the man in the Radio Cowboys in the early 90's). A salute to the "unsung master" of guitar.
i have a version of this song by TIM TAM AND THE TURN ONS. it sounds almost exactly the same. did the same recording get re-released with a new band name?
The Sudetta family used to live here in Newton Falls,Ohio. My older Brother went to school with John. I remember when he released his first record "Alone and Crying" In fact it is probably in the old pile of 45's from way back then. I went to see him at a hop back in San Bernadino back around 63-64
I knew Johnny fortune also. I took lessons from him for a year or so, and after that we would just talk and jam in styles music. He also taught Buckethead for a bit. If you ever see Buckethead play country style guitar, Johnny is the one to thank for that.
Johnny was my Uncle and my Granddad was his brother . My Grandma was married to the drummer Granddad and this song was recoreded when Uncle Johnny was about 20. his brother was joseph and he played the drums on this album and he was 14...thay so kick ass and i im so proud of them both...thay are both gone now and that is such a kick in the gut...thay both made some kick ass music and thay are both greatly missed!!!RIP
@dindints Hey it's been a long time since I checked this siht You knoe Johnny taught Sammy Hagar to play too and we played a traveled together with Terry Staffored for alond=g long time {Suspicion{ I sanf=g the ooh oohs I'm so hppy to know hsat he is remembered I hope Joe ans drummer {mu husnand 25 years was too} I remember Styls as well as Harris Music in Ontario Met John and Joe at Narods in Chinomwhen John asked me tosit in ad he thought I was great sounds concieted please reply
Johnny and I played Soul Surfer at The Buckhorn Lodge one night back in 1994. While Van Halen's sound engineer looked on. You can catch a climpse of Johnny and myself under my profile. I've also started to create a myspace page for him. What a loss to the music world.
This piece gives me goosebumps to this day! I'm really into the Spaghetti Western guitar sound and Johnny was a true original! I can only dream of having Johnny's talent, but I'll keep chopping at it and I thank Johnny for that big chunk of inspiration! Rest In Peace Johnny and Joseph... May we keep your platters spinning into eternity!
The saxophone reminds me of The Zoombinis.
Awesome song, though.

Wow, I took lesson from Johnny for 5 years. He is such an amazing guitarist. Huge influence on my playing. What happened to him?

The Surf sound always lent itself very well to the Spanish themes. This is a classic.
