Bad documentary. Firstly, yes the world republic does come from the latin word res publica, meaning "thing" or "affair." Meaning "public affair" or public thing. That "thing" is not the "law" as this documentary claims. Politics is that very "public affair." Politics not for the elite or few. 2.)What usually characterizes a republic is that power is given to representatives by the people and not through inherent birthrights. This process if democratic!
@DannyG1533 I need more proof than a quote from a piece of commie propaganda. & more than a person who doesn't know what the terms democracy & republic mean can provide.

The "Father of the Constitution," he was the principal author of the document. In 1788, he wrote over a third of the Federalist Papers, still the most influential commentary on the Constitution.

REPUBLICANS ... B.S. ... want to negate Democracy, of the people by the people ...
Just a question whats the point of this? "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America to the REPUBLIC" You can stop there. Seems obvious that we are a republic
Obviously when people refer to the US as a democracy they mean a representative democracy, not direct democracy. Yes, it is a republic. It could also be described as a representative democracy or a liberal democracy. So technically there is nothing wrong with describing the US as a 'democracy'.
the positive thing (from gouverment view) about democracy is, that nobody is to blame for anything, because till people start to get it, whose fault this and that was, the person responsible is not president anymore, some other puppet is then. so the regime everybody might be angry about and stand up against is out of line anyway, so nobody makes revolution, because "someone else" seems to be in charge. but they are all puppets of the real bosses anyway.
We already have an oligarchy what we need is a revolution. It has been far far too long. I fear that it may be too late with the government's monopoly on all the most advanced and powerful weapons. We have been complacent and stupid. There is only one party in dc hellbent on increasing government power until we have cops on our doorsteps arresting us for drinking water.
You're average person, by nature, is not evil. Almost everyone I know is perfectly honest and hard working. He is mistaken when he says anarchy is a bad idea. In my opinion anyway.
I dont see what is so controversial about this... I mean, i thought it was pretty well known that we are a republic rather than a democracy. And there isnt really much wrong with that either. A democracy is a nation where the people vote on every decision made (for or against a bill, for or against a budget change, etc), whereas a republic is a nation where the people vote for people they believe best represent their ideas to do the voting on these decisions for them (sounds like the US, no?).
..that is what Obama is heading us for! When the Taxes run out? He will then have only one thing left. People's Estates. And that is how = Generational Theft begins. OVER TAXING everything one leaves to their loved ones. This is the future of our children and grand-children! Cause Obama thinks WE THE PEOPLE need to fund his pet projects and that takes all our CA$H and anything else we have earned ~
People need to remember this when they are saying their "PLEDGE" of allegiance, one nation under "GOD"? no it's a republic, one nation under the LAW!! which is how I say my pledge. I only question what we say we want our "small' government to referee. I would rather it referee healthcare than warfare.
What I'm wondering is, when are we ever going to get over this illusion we call a Government? To all you ingorant Patriots out there, read a book! Maybe you'll learn that our Government is using the cornerstone of all leadership, and that's mass manipulation, only to benefit the major corporations that run our world today! All the Government wants is your money, people. I'm just waiting for America to finally awaken and realize this. The only way we can wake up is if you believe we can wake up!
Why does everyone think that anarchy will fall into a "he who has the biggest guns wins?" When I would ask, what do we have now? Does not government have a monopoly on the use of force? Can they not just do whatever the hell they feel like now? If all people are truly free can we not hire a private protector to protect our property when we are away? Ever try to fire a gvt employee for gross incompetence?
In a civil society gvt is really superfluous, and draining on producers.
The greek word krátos, generally anglicanized as -cracy, as a suffix, means power, government or leadership. The greek word dêmos, or demo in english means people, and thus the meaning of the word democracy is; "peoplegovernment" i.e government by the people.
The word republic however does in no way allude to a system of government, but rather to a state without royalty.
Thus a state can be a republic governed by democracy...!
this is a terrible documentary, some parts of it are good but it gets some of its basic political concepts wrong, the righter should have actually read how the Greek democracy worked, they had trials you couldn't just chase people down and linch them. rome didn't turn into a democracy, it went from a republic to a oligarchy terrible miss representation in this.
the makers of this video were completely unfamiliar with the ideas of murray rothbard, benjamin tucker, and the anarcho individualists and capitalists. we do need someone to violate our rights in order to protect them.
There can be natural rule and spontaneous order. People are not inherently bad. Do people not break laws because they are illegal or do they not break laws for other reasons?
Why do I not go up and punch this person or that person? Is it because it is wrong?
We need to be more on the anarchy side of things, not the tyrannical side.
@mysterycycle communities. You cant have a nation function in this way, but locally, it is possible to have "law" supported purely with the presence of a community.
Nice video, but actually, so far as can be seen from the video, there does not seem to be such a thing as a stable form of government.
This video rightly point out that anarchy, monarchy and Democracy are transient state of government. However, it fails to realize that Republics don't endure either, unfortunately.
History shows that republics usually end up collapsing into oligarchies, which eventually prompts revolt... it's one big circle.
@sylverdrag Then the goal is to always strive to maintain limits on government power. Every time we fail at that, we get one step closer to oligarchy.
And that is why socialists must be stopped at all costs.
@sylverdrag I guess the answer to that question is up to us now isnt it? Another good Question could be what as human social creations or creatures should we fight for. Our Freedoms? or Our Preferences? (do remember that one mans preference is another mans dislike). Or how about the question what should we impose on our fellow human creations or creatures to better the interests of the whole?
@sylverdrag I believe in freedom so that's why I will defend my position on believing in a Republic. "But can we keep one" is of no concern to me. Why ponder if we can keep one while you can spend more of your time defending one. Unless you believe in imposing what the majority prefers (remember you have to be consistent if you believe this, no matter even if the majority rules against your favor. No switching to republic because its convenient for you then). Freedom=Republic
What's up with these neocon hysterics who use CAPITAL LETTERS and can't tell the difference between a government bailout and nationalization. When Fidel nationalized business they had no way out. Rescued US firms that can buy their independence anytime. GM can buy back the preferred stock the US taxpayers took as collateral for our investment and AIG can pay back the billions they took to save themselves from their own folly. If this is Socialism, the Democrats aren't very good Socialists.
what exactly is a neocon? people throw terms around, like conservative, liberal, etc., but they don't define the words.
You clearly need to have a lesson in history and what terms actually mean and what it is to be a socialist.
Banks can buy back their independence? Really? Like when they were forced to accept the money if they didn't want it? Propping up a failed business, forcing out a CEO for a bailout, and you say that isn't socialistic?

@nearamil A democracy cannot be an oligarcy by defenition. A republic can be both since a republic only means that the person or person´s in power are elected to power and not by hereditary means. Monarcy is usually used to describe a hereditary ruling system. Whitch means a republic is the opposite to a monarcy, it does not mean annything else.
@nearamil not a democracy just an oligarchy. It was a democracy from the late 19th century to WW2. After WW2 the military industrial complex gave DC total power over the people the first sign of an oligarchy. Why do people think we can't overturn weed prohibition? because we don't have the power anymore. People putting their faith in the president or other politicians is proof. Only part of the system that is democratic anymore is the presidential election.
@nearamil how many laws do you know of overturned since 1945 by the people? none. We are the new british empire. Federals do whatever they want and we are powerless to stop them. We pretty much already have gun control it's just a matter of time until they force us to turn in the trinkets we're left with. If only more people understood life. We do have people of this caliber in our government and they need our support. We need to realize that the presidency is insignificant next to the congress. Take back congress and we have won the battle.
First- Not all authoritarian regimes are far left. The fascists are far right because they are reactionaries who advocate for conservative principles.
Second-Democracy isn't mob rule, democracy is more than a literal majority rule. Democracy in it's modern form is majority rule with laws that protect minorities etc.
Third-There was a misrepresentation of anarchism. The cuban revolution was not by anarchists, and anarchy isn't just a way to gain power.
"We are socialists, we are enemies of today's capitalistic economic system for the exploitation of the economically weak, with its unfair salaries, with its unseemly evaluation of a human being according to wealth and property instead of responsibility and performance, and we are all determined to destroy this system under all conditions."
