Heating bills are aroung 300-400 per month for a average size house, 6 month heating season, do the math. The women here are all looking for their own rich slope worker. 20 dollars an hour is min. wage  for Anchorage. You might be able to afford a crappy 300sq ft condo in meth town. Anchorage was a fantastic town in the late 70's early 80's. Lots of gangs now and rapes.

I love Alaska! Been around the world a bit and in my 59 years, it's the only place I ever visited that I got off the plane and felt like I was home. Warm friendly people, scenery that has to be seen to be appreciated, words fail me...the winters are harsh but you get acclimated. So much to do and see, so many outdoor activities, I could go on and on....Gwennies has the best sourdough hotcakes on the planet too. :)

Alaska is a terrific place to be sure. So much to do and see, the locals are warm and friendly. I too love Anchorage and the surrounding areas. Best home style food in town imho is Gwennies Old Alaska Restaurant....biggest sourdough hotcakes EVER! :)

I personally hate living in Alaska. It's a beautiful state, and I would love to VISIT it often, but living here sucks. Mostly because I feel that there is nothing to do. I'm not much of an outdoorsy person, and you have to be to enjoy it here I think. I was born and raised here, and now I'm going to UAA. I just can't wait to move to some huge city down south. I'll probably always end up back here though...

beartooth has great food....but ive been born and raised here for the last 21 years and alaska is kick ass. i hate going down to the states because there is too many damn people and traffic everywhere. its a good place to get away from all the bullshit down in the states. weve got the biggest salmon here and the best hunting IMO.

If I remember there is always work in the medical field in Anchorage Medical and Legal top hireing jobs good pay and if you are lucky to be able to stand it in the small quite villages like Ketchikan the hourly wage will blow your mind. be ready for the winters they are fairly long.

I spent about 18 months in Alaska, about 2/3 in Anchorage, and the rest divided between Seward and touring the rest of the state.

I can say this, I wouldn't move back without bringing my own lady. I loved the state, but the male to female ratio was the biggest deciding factor in my decision to move back to the lower 48.

The Bear Tooth Pub (Threater) is so amazing. I saw the movie "Teeth" with a packed crowd and I had a great time.

You can ride in a float plane and watch whales. Alaska is a great place to visit.

Yes but how depression resistant is it? How expensive are the homes? If the economy is good there's a good chance that the housing bubble hasn't popped up there yet. In that case people may want to rent rather than buy. My job in the states is pretty depression resistant (I'm a transit bus mechanic) but if it went belly up, I wouldn't say no to relocating.
