not to get nitpicky but technically you did complain one note which was the packaging where it said to turn off the led lights was to save energy (maybe it wasnt a complaint but it certiantly wasnt a compliment) i guess it would be a different reason to like something then what netgear intended on. still a great video and glad you keep making them nice job!
I bought one of these so I could use ad-hoc party on my PS3, which only works with wired connection, and the router is pretty much on the other side of the house from my PS3, making running a cable very inconvenient.
1)Would this work in a large apartment block where the electrical wiring has more room to spread? I am talking about only one apartment, but wouldn't the signal spread throughout the building and since this isn't a house, present a problem?
2)This doesn't look very secure if someone else has one of the plugs.
These things are great, I've never been so happy with a product.
However one thing that is worth making note of and that is mixing brands or models as sometime this can cause interference and the noticeable side effects are slow internet (about 10% of your normal speed) or no connection at all.
@Blunty3000 Hey Blunty do you know if this Device is availiable in North America if so do you think I would need to buy it at Best Buy or is it only available online if so I can always check out Amazon.ca to see if its available. I'm only asking if it is available, please let me know.
@Blunty3000 i cannot connect to my wireless router due for it being at a certain distance from the house, will getting these solve the problem? i ask this becuase arnt u supposd to b able to make the connection between the router 2 laptop 1st in order for these things to actualli work,or would it work immediatly regardless of issues of my laptop not being able to connect to my router eventhough it detects it however cannot connect due to distance.. plz reply thanks love ur vids
2 questions: (1) how do I make sure my neighbor doesn't jack my signal (especially since I stay in an apt building) and (2) can I plug a switch into the outlet side to extend the number of ports (i.e. one for my PS3, one for the set top box and one for my HTPC) or do I need 3 outlets for that? Cheers!
I bought some decent ones off amazon about a year ago and they're excellent.
sorreh for the edit, but yes theres is a lot less speed lost than with a wifi connection, your house cables work almost as well and a normal wired connection and as everyone knows, there is quite a bit of speed lost when using a wifi connection.
Great review as always Blunty. Statement: I heard the other day that the only downside to having the ethernet through the power lines was that they had to be on the same circuit to work. That is only because since they are separate circuits they cant pass the data between each other and an easy fix would be wire a few wall jacks with a crossed circuit (like 220 volt in the US = 2, 110 volt lines connected to each other). Those lines are normally for household appliances like a dryer.
I've got a question, my x box is set up in a basement so the wifi obviously stinks, but my modem is connected to my pc upstairs, and I need that connection to stay in place. I'm interested in getting these but I can't disconnect my modem from my pc, suggestions?
for me i diddnt have a choice, i got so pissed off with disconnected from xbox live flashing up all the time even worse as its the new 360 s so i decided to get my self some of these plug in mains ethernet things lol anyway cut to the chase they worked so well i connected my ps3 to it and the connection and download speed wnet up from wireless N speed, the ones i got have a 300mbps speed so future broadband upgrades shoud be future proofed till boraodband exeedes the speed on this gadget.
Ha I read about this product the other day I wouldn't mind it ,I personally prefer to have my devices like my pc and xbox hardwired and at the moment I am running 2 long cables which doesn't worry me personally but I find less problems with using wires then going wireless and plus when something hardwired stuffs up it is generally 3-4 reasons why, with wireless it can be too many from a fridge fucking with the signal to a random issue with the wireless adapter, just my personal opinion anyway.
I am from Austria (not AustraLia :P) and I tried to use this kind of networking devices (also from Netgear), but they didn't really work because the wirering in my house is seperated in several individual circles (or something like that..). As a result I couldn't connected a device from room A to a device in room B, but a device in room C worked perfectly well. Anyone else had this sort of problem?
IN the future people will not only be one with computers, they will be able to transfer data using thier own body's electromagnetic field. <<< What has that got to do with this...I dont know XD
My Wii is literally in the same room as my computer (Yes, I don't have a laptop) so I don't know wether it would help me or not, because I do use the Wii's internet connection alot. I'm probably not getting it, because there is a 3 feet differance, and I don't mind 240 less pixels than the norm if I want it to run fast.
I Have Been Using One Of These For About 2 Years However Mines Not Netgear Its One U Got Free Off Virgin Media They Are Truelly Awsome :) Esp At 200Mbps :) Id Reccomend U Getting One
i might need to get one of these because my wireless router is downstairs and my desktop is upstairs and if it works really well then it will solve all my problems of constantly disconnecting
An old "solution" really. Was very popular back in 2003, when they tried to deliver the Internet to every home using powerlines.
But, the thing is that every power transformer, compensator or noise-canceller seriously interferes with the signal, as well as wire connections do. If both of your outlets are on the same power wire - the device will work awesomely, but once the signal has to pass a power switch or a power pivot - you'll lose that ethernet signal.

good device, helps people who are to "lazy" to wire their house with proper ethernet cabling. Also for those who don't want to ruin their house by drilling holes from floor to floor. Probably the same people who don't care about gigabit connections anyways. For those it's perfect !!! I still prefer a big drill and an gigabit connection :d good vid :D

Good review of the product, ive come across many of them out in the field being a techie an all and while the older versions of it are just damn horrible to the point of my brain hurting, this one seems alright
Though i think you should have showed it working blunty
i dont have wifi in my garden and would like to go there with my laptop in the summer, can i connect this to another router so that i have wifi at my garden? or isn't this an option?
My computer is as far as possible from my Wi-Fi hotspot, there are brick walls in the way, there are other items sapping it, Hotspot is downstairs and PC is upstairs, and I still get 5 bar connection. I would argue that Wi-Fi is perfect.
Wish I new about these before I drilled a hole in my floor to fit in an ethernet to my modem downstairs. Brilliant product I will have to look into buying a set.
I think Lifehacker did an article talking about different ways of getting wired networks, and powerline adapters came up. They said that in general, normal Ethernet cables are still faster, so keep that in mind. However, if it works well gaming, then feel free to use them if your games console is far away from your router in your house.
If you make an offical blunty shirt that says "Step off my balls!" you shall make a ton, and i will buy the first one.
Do you get many sneek peek products? I ask since it seams the combination of technological credibility and large target market viewer volume would make you a prime canidate for everything from Mp3 to Prototype gameing systems.
@JediHeady these have been out in the UK for atleast a year, i live in the UK and have been using them for atleast a year, search cisco linksys (the one i use) or or their is econnect homeplug turbo :)
@sslego Just because Blunlty has just posted a review should not suggest that Australia has not had these when they first appeared. Australia is a well known early adopter of new things.
These are great gadgets, i use similar ones that you plug in, and have 5 ethernet ports on, i use them for xbox 360 and ps3 as my wireless isn't too great for multiple wireless connections at once when it comes to online gaming. These are an amazing piece of kit i would tottaly agree i can't find anything wrong with them.
This is probably a stupid question, but are the outlets and plugs a different shape in Australia than they are in the U.S.A.? I ask because I have never seen a plug around here that would fit into the front of those things.
Thank you for the review blunty, but I have a couple of questions, which others may want to know and I may be answering my own questions here. The two devices, I'm guessing, will have to be on the same circuit in the house to work? I'm also guessing that it may not work on a powerboard that has a built in filter (because I'm guessing it will filter out the network stuff through that board?) cheers
does this require to have netgear modem and what type of gauge amp wire do you need in your fuse box for this to work ,well does it run through the fuse box at all?
I enjoyed the review myself for what that's worth you know they were supposed to be building an internet service that is suppose to work through the electrical system here in the states that works much the same as these netgear products but it would eliminate the need for modems entirely. BTW been looking at the Nikon S8100 camera lately and i know you are a canon guy like myself but this is for my daughter, could you get a review model of this?
@IggyMaster117 Well gee... if ONLY there was some kind of massive interconnected network of computers one could search for information.. that'd be so cool....
Look... as I've said before, I tend not to mention price in vids because while price can vary (wildly) over time, geographical location, exchange rates, currency and even which retailer you're buying from... the information in my video CAN'T alter over time.
I've got a question that wasn't really answered in the video. I living in a 15 story college dorm (on the 11th floor) and I was wondering if this would still be an efficient means, or if all the resistance from all of the wiring would degrade the signal to the point that I might as well just use my wifi. Thanks.
I've got a older pair of these and they work brilliantly, though be warned if your house electricity wiring is particularly bad or "unique" (i.e. some pre-WW2 buildings in the uk) it will cause issues. Not the fault of the adapters but worth looking into.
Blunty, might I add if you use these for too long, they tend to kill themselves in a range of 6 months (I have bought about 4 of them, only 1 are operational).
"...sometimes it's just a complete pain in the ass!" YES! i feel like the utter simplicity of a wired connection is vastly underrated! wireless is great to move your laptop around and all the cool stuff, but it's just utterly amazing how wireless setups can just kill themselves and cause you to do hours of fucking digging to fix the shit.
laptops/similar devices aside, wireless sucks compared to wired connections or this product!
Well I looked into these a little more and it seems like a very good idea, however they are quite expensive... the product reviewed (200 mb/s model) is 120$ USD. I understand this may be more reliable, but I recently purchased a 450 mb/s gaming ethernet connected wifi adaptor for just 50$ which reliably streams 1080p HD. I could see the use of these things, but I think they're a little too expensive to replace wifi for me.
I for one thankyou for this review blunty, since I've had a NETGEAR WiFi card in my PC for nearly a year now, and the little aerial is literally hanging by a thread, this is a lifesaver. Truely.
I was also genuinely surprised that you can transmit data over power lines, I didn't think it was actually feasible.
I just might go out and get me one of these. Thanks heaps :)
So with this plugging into your outlets, does this heat up at all? I would figure with this plugged into a power outlet that it would heat up after awhile.
my cable guy actually recommended this a few weeks ago. of course, he said it might not work if the circuit of one plug doesn't actually connect to the one you need it to (as in multiple amount of circuits running through the house independent of each other) but eh, i figure if it doesn't work, no harm in taking it back.
Holy shit this is a dream come true for me. With my crappy computer and being in New Zealand, wireless internet is slow as fuck and having a long wire going through my house is a pain especcially with having to worry about the dog chewing it. Is this available in NZ?
The top two prong slots are slanted inwards. That might be an aussie thing or whatever but i don't own nor have ever seen a cord that would plug into that, does it come in America flavor?
I agree Blunty mate, these are brilliant. I have been using a set of Netcomm Homeplug AV 200Mbps adaptors since June last year. I am getting 110Mbps across the link which I use to extend my wifi network between floors and stream 1080p video to my XBMC running Acer Aspire Revo from my Linux server and it works beautifully. The Netgear ones in your review are however better IMO because of the power plug output and line filtering. Good we have options on the market now :)

If you make an offical blunty shirt that says "Step off my balls!" you shall make a ton, and i will buy the first one.
Do you get many sneek peek products? I ask since it seams the combination of technological credibility and large target market viewer volume would make you a prime canidate for everything from Mp3 to Prototype gameing systems.
tresanarchist 11 months ago
@JediHeady these have been out in the UK for atleast a year, i live in the UK and have been using them for atleast a year, search cisco linksys (the one i use) or or their is econnect homeplug turbo :)
sslego 11 months ago
@sslego Just because Blunlty has just posted a review should not suggest that Australia has not had these when they first appeared. Australia is a well known early adopter of new things.
SauronsEye 11 months ago
These are great gadgets, i use similar ones that you plug in, and have 5 ethernet ports on, i use them for xbox 360 and ps3 as my wireless isn't too great for multiple wireless connections at once when it comes to online gaming. These are an amazing piece of kit i would tottaly agree i can't find anything wrong with them.
sslego 11 months ago
eeee eeee uuuhhh uhhhh i agree it really is that easy

This is probably a stupid question, but are the outlets and plugs a different shape in Australia than they are in the U.S.A.? I ask because I have never seen a plug around here that would fit into the front of those things.
EliteGuard01 11 months ago
im going to get that. unless its expensive, i might wate and just use wifi lol.

Dont think this will be out in UK :(
Azard3 11 months ago
@Azard3 Powerline adaptors have been available in the UK for years, it would be highly unlikely that these will not appear given time.

@Azard3 Check Argos or Amazon or eBay. Type "Powerline"

Too bad they don't do something like this for coaxial cable. I want to put cable in the second bedroom and don't want to make a huge mess.

joevictor53 11 months ago
Thank you for the review blunty, but I have a couple of questions, which others may want to know and I may be answering my own questions here. The two devices, I'm guessing, will have to be on the same circuit in the house to work? I'm also guessing that it may not work on a powerboard that has a built in filter (because I'm guessing it will filter out the network stuff through that board?) cheers

does this require to have netgear modem and what type of gauge amp wire do you need in your fuse box for this to work ,well does it run through the fuse box at all?
TheDrunkfarmer 11 months ago
I enjoyed the review myself for what that's worth you know they were supposed to be building an internet service that is suppose to work through the electrical system here in the states that works much the same as these netgear products but it would eliminate the need for modems entirely. BTW been looking at the Nikon S8100 camera lately and i know you are a canon guy like myself but this is for my daughter, could you get a review model of this?

IggyMaster117 11 months ago 14
@IggyMaster117 Well gee... if ONLY there was some kind of massive interconnected network of computers one could search for information.. that'd be so cool....
Look... as I've said before, I tend not to mention price in vids because while price can vary (wildly) over time, geographical location, exchange rates, currency and even which retailer you're buying from... the information in my video CAN'T alter over time.
Google is your friend.

Blunty...how do you know everything about technology?? :P
(while I'm asking, know of any good relatively cheap recording equipment I can use to record my own sound FX for a short film?)
thanks
HighRoad001 11 months ago
I've got a question that wasn't really answered in the video. I living in a 15 story college dorm (on the 11th floor) and I was wondering if this would still be an efficient means, or if all the resistance from all of the wiring would degrade the signal to the point that I might as well just use my wifi. Thanks.
bountyhunter501 11 months ago
I think its worth buying just because it reduces the number of cables in the hows , that's always good
putzamoale99 11 months ago
I've got a older pair of these and they work brilliantly, though be warned if your house electricity wiring is particularly bad or "unique" (i.e. some pre-WW2 buildings in the uk) it will cause issues. Not the fault of the adapters but worth looking into.
corgansmate 11 months ago
lol. i just went and got one of these :P

Blunty, might I add if you use these for too long, they tend to kill themselves in a range of 6 months (I have bought about 4 of them, only 1 are operational).
macro312 11 months ago
Is there any information or tests to see if/how much data transfer is reduced using this device?
Bmage28 11 months ago
"...sometimes it's just a complete pain in the ass!" YES! i feel like the utter simplicity of a wired connection is vastly underrated! wireless is great to move your laptop around and all the cool stuff, but it's just utterly amazing how wireless setups can just kill themselves and cause you to do hours of fucking digging to fix the shit.
laptops/similar devices aside, wireless sucks compared to wired connections or this product!
RyTrapp0 11 months ago
That thing with the power wiring sounds like it could have a lot of interference problems.
hattrickster33 11 months ago
lol these things finally get quite good AFTER I run a Ethernet cable through my celling for my PS3 :P
PAPO1990 11 months ago
Well I looked into these a little more and it seems like a very good idea, however they are quite expensive... the product reviewed (200 mb/s model) is 120$ USD. I understand this may be more reliable, but I recently purchased a 450 mb/s gaming ethernet connected wifi adaptor for just 50$ which reliably streams 1080p HD. I could see the use of these things, but I think they're a little too expensive to replace wifi for me.

:( Oh, WHAT am I to do with my 5 billion ft cable NOW? x/ DILEMMA.
losroftheday 11 months ago
I for one thankyou for this review blunty, since I've had a NETGEAR WiFi card in my PC for nearly a year now, and the little aerial is literally hanging by a thread, this is a lifesaver. Truely.
I was also genuinely surprised that you can transmit data over power lines, I didn't think it was actually feasible.
I just might go out and get me one of these. Thanks heaps :)
Chrispy89 11 months ago
So with this plugging into your outlets, does this heat up at all? I would figure with this plugged into a power outlet that it would heat up after awhile.
bremstone 11 months ago
How much in AUD?
sinistersecrecy 11 months ago
my cable guy actually recommended this a few weeks ago. of course, he said it might not work if the circuit of one plug doesn't actually connect to the one you need it to (as in multiple amount of circuits running through the house independent of each other) but eh, i figure if it doesn't work, no harm in taking it back.
yourlilemogirl 11 months ago
Holy shit this is a dream come true for me. With my crappy computer and being in New Zealand, wireless internet is slow as fuck and having a long wire going through my house is a pain especcially with having to worry about the dog chewing it. Is this available in NZ?

I agree Blunty mate, these are brilliant. I have been using a set of Netcomm Homeplug AV 200Mbps adaptors since June last year. I am getting 110Mbps across the link which I use to extend my wifi network between floors and stream 1080p video to my XBMC running Acer Aspire Revo from my Linux server and it works beautifully. The Netgear ones in your review are however better IMO because of the power plug output and line filtering. Good we have options on the market now :)
