When my hunting buddies and I were younger, it was the macho thing to pull 80 - 100 lbs. Now we are around 65 years old with many kills and more years than we like to admit, are ALL using around 50#. Not that we can't pull the weight but we realized a long time ago that you must be able to draw very slow to keep all the eyes (not just what you are shooting at) from sounding the alarm...
not saying anything about anyone but poundage means nothing in 80s an early 90s the bows were only shooting low to mid 200fps an killing anything they hit with the correct connetic energy truth is i shoot with alot of old timers new bows 55lbs pull set with the right grain arrow with broadhead an i can say they take plenty of game point is poundage is nothing correct setup an correct connetic energy you have it made. (spelling is wrong on some words to lazy to fix)
true video. I row 110 lbs dumbells at the gym, I can draw any bow anyone has ever put in my hands. BUT i shoot at 60 lbs draw because I can do it all freakin day and my eyes aint good enough to make clean kills out past 30 yards (where i hunt isnt clear for that far anyhow) so I dont exactly need a rocket to get it done. dont let your draw weight turn into a small dick contest.
@NoahK16 That's pretty nice dude. It's just like lifting weights, the more often you draw your bow back the more poundage you will be able to handle comfortably. I am 16 now, started bowhunting when I was 14, and I started out with 40 pounds. Now I have my bow set to 70.
also who cares if you have to pull off a little bit with a compound to get it back once the cams flip over you have a min of 50% let off i mean wtf if you as a full grown adult cant hold 40-50 pounds then i suggest a gym membership. again been shooting archery for over 20 years to little bow =cripple game ,deer should be shot win a min of 45# elk and moose 55# and these are min draw weights with a absolute min 500 grain arrow i have over 300 big game bow kills ranging from rabbits to cape buffao
70 is not heavy in any shape way or form.....the fact it to many people dont put in suffient time to pull bows in that range because there lazy and dont want to work out or condition iv been hunting with a 70 pound recurve sine i was 14 im 30 years old now and still use a 75#@27" long bow for the bulk of my hunting back in the day poundages in the 70-85 were the norm back when people got out of there house and actully got excersize. my heavy bow atm is a 102# howard hill bow
The force's strong in this fella! nice tubeclip buddy and it's good advice.
Though here's what i'll suggest, if you're beginning in archery but an adult, get from 40 to 60 pound bow, though you'll have some issues drawing it in the few weeks after purchase, it'll get easy very quickly.
It's his bow, his body, and his video. He can pull his bow back without an arrow all he wants. I don't do it, simply because I don't want to pay for new cam. string, and shop time if the release does happen to fail or I accidentally hit the trigger.
Maybe you folks can help. my father bought me an Indian 2139 Tracker Compound bow. It's been a good bow, been shooting it since I was 14 years old, and the string is just now starting to fray on me, and I'd like to replace them. Does anyone know where I can get replacement strings for this bow? Also, I'm an over-weight person, and I'm noticing my weight is a problem with my shot, my stomach is in the way of my draw back, any suggestions, other than a diet? lol
Dumb ass, you dont pull a bow back without an arrow knocked in it in case of dry fire. Stoped watching as soon as ya did that, obviously cant teach what ya dont know.
@John57154 Please explain to me how he is a dumb ass. How do you pick out a bow in a shop? You draw them back to see how they feel, their draw cycle, and their fit for you. And no shop owner will give you an arrow to test because its not necessary and its a hazard. Also if he draws it back it doesn't mean hes going to dry fire it anyways and I imagine your not the greatest bow hunter either if your insulting him on something that every experienced hunter has done. Think before you post please...
@John57154 Another point, this guy is giving the RIGHT advice. He knows what hes doing. Go to any saftey seminar, or bowhunting course and i guarentee you, that you will hear the same things.
@John57154 yeah, i got my pse brute at cabelas when i was 13 and they had an arrow knocked to see my draw length. It had all the measurments on the arrow or shaft. Also a release can fail if your an experianced hunter you would know this. You have to treat it like a weapon not a toy. The loop can also slip. And no what also pissed me off is that he assumes the majority of people can pull 71 pounds. I want to be taught by someone who knows everything, not common sense stuff.
thats not true at all. you need to start at the max poundage you can pull without straining. thats what im doin now. something he didnt mention is that its dangerouse doing that. alot of people use really cheap releases that can giveway easily. even the more expensive releases can break. if it breaks when you got it up in the air like that the arrow can travel over 400 yards depending on certain factors.
hey they do that "put the bow in the air" casue its a tequnech that helps them with there bow or maybe there trying to get there bow to a higher poundage and they need to get use to that poundage so they work there arm to get use to that bow
Just alittle words of advice. In the video he did what tbone from bonecollector refers to as. Over extending your elbow. You want the bow on the fat part of your thumb. Your knuckles at a 45 degree angle and your elbow slightly tilted not a lot slight like you are begining to say the pledge of allegeance. Just rember that. And relax the hand holding the bow let your trigger finger or anchor point be doing all the work. Its like a rifle in a gun sled shooting long range.
This guy is awsome i just started shooting bows and im 14 and ive been eatin sleepin and shittin bow hunting ahaha im at about 35 pounds right now but im getting up there its getting easyer and easyer day by day. And i can get a heart/ lung shot from about 35 yards away so i think im doing pretty good haha any more tips for me ?
@pestkilla14 You are doing it right young man. My daughter is the smae age as you been shooting for a year and is up to 43 lbs. I started her at about 32 and she has been working up little by little. She will be shooting her first deer by bow this year in Nebraska. The main thing is get a good broadhead and that will help a lot. It only takes 41 punds to go clean through a whitetail, so keep working at it and good luck hunting.
i let my uncle how my mattews compund bow it is set at 60 pounds, he dry fired it... i had a new string put on about 100 shots befor it happened and i was wonder if i am ok to shoot it again,i looked over every thing. i checked the string over and over there is no stretching or any kind of out of the ordanary. there is no cracks in the cams or limbs. please help me i am realy woried about it.

bow tech has already produced a bow with 100lbs limb it was the samson vft.. way to much bow.. this guy sorta has a point on poundage..u want a higher pundage when hunting bigger game.. but he needs some advice himself...........IF YOUR GONNA MAKE A VIDEO STATING WHAT IS RIGHT AN WRONG IN THE ARCHERY GAME.. YOUR FORGETTING ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING,... NEVER DRAW YOUR BOW WITHOUT AN ARROW..THAT IS THE DUMBEST THING ANY ARCHER CAN DO..
@bryan45067 WRONG!!! Never DRY FIRE a bow without an arrow in it. Pulling it back and letting it back in does not hurt a bow as long as you don't DRY FIRE it. Don't release without an arrow on the string to absorb the kinetic energy stored in the bent limbs. Learn your bow technology and physics a little better before you spout off something ignorant like that. This guy give rough but very good advice on bow topics and techniques.
@bryan45067 you stupid you need to go back and read some more about what you think you know about stating something when you think you know something is the dumbest thing any dip shit can do
Yeah, i know what you mean. Whenever my friends come to shoot my bow, they always try to set it to like 60 pounds. I can pull it and hold it at 60 put i really prefer, and hunt at 45. It's just way better for me. I'm no show off like some jackasses out there, just an effective hunter. I'm 14 now so maybe in the future i'll put my poundage up, but i like 45. Comfortable, effective, and powerfull.
lol agree got freinds who pull back ther bow by the time its back they cnt hold it even with let of lol. i got a mathews mission menace at 40lb but i dnt shoot it it works perfecly fine but i prefer shooting a 20 year old compound bow i dont know why i just prefer it and u dont need the best bow with best technoligy i like a simple bow with no complications so yh dnt think u gotta spend thousands of dollars on a high tech bow just go with a simple one

Exactly. Hit it right on the head. Great tip, man. People got to remember how many deer were taken with Recurves long before there were compounds. A lot of those Recurves, not all of them but a lot of them, were at a lot less draw weight than what we shoot today. Good job, dude.
