If you find something on the street and pick it up, that is NOT stealing. That is simply keeping what you found. Also, not returning it doesn't make you dishonest, maybe indifferent and/or selfish, but not dishonest.

Rav, This IS a good test, but you still can't generalize by saying one group is more honest than another one. 100 is still a fairly small sample size, and stealing wallets isn't a universal litmus test of honesty.

you can also argue that dropping 100 wallets around a medium-sized city isn't as good as dropping 100 wallets around one small area of one city. and if you look at the site, the sample size for blacks were really small. only 23 blacks were tested compared to 77 whites.

I once lost my wallet. it had a $50 bill.. the founder took the $50 and sent me the wallet with all my ID's. Although greasy, i still commend the person for sending the wallet because its such a hassle to get all the ID's again.
I don't understand why he broke it down to race. What does that have to do with anything? You can't even distinguish ethnicity from race, and really it has absolutely no relevance. Economic and educational status would make more sense, but I suppose that would have been difficult to do. Too many flaws in this test. Seems kind of unfair that he brought race into it.

Results will vary and yet stay the same (throughout the world) depending on the amount of money in the wallet in addition to area, the class of people and economic standing within the region, not race. Put a billion in each wallet and you'll get 1 back.
In my case I lost mine recently... I had 90€, about a 100$ and this guy who found it, drove to my house after calling me just to return it. So I still have faith in humanity...

This is a very unreliable study, as anyone who has taken any statistics class will attest to. The sample size is way to small to determine any generalization of a population. The only conclusion probably worth stating is the point of that most people are honest. All other conclusions cannot be determined because the study is much too inaccurate. This wasn't conducted scientifically and is generally worthless.

Let me clarify, when I say that they "own 1/16th" I am referring to their wealth, not income. A persons with an income of 30,000 is much wealthier than a person whose income is 25,000, when you consider what a huge chunk of their income goes towards living costs. It would level out to something like the average black man saving 2,000 a year compared to a white man saving 32,000 a year.

So, of the 23 black people tested:
57% (13) were honest and returned the wallets.
43% (10) were dishonest and kept the wallets.
Ones who stole were at: 0:55, 1:05, 1:19, 3:20, 3:51, 6:07, 6:19, 7:02, 4:28(he had his kids with him), and 5:35(he got out of his car while driving to steal it!!!) (only some blacks returned them like at 1:58, and 3:34, 3:38, 6:02, 6:04, 6:59, 7:26, 7:28, 7:33)

Yes, it's that Penn. I don't know if anyone's told you this already, but they talked about it on the show on Jan. 29th. You might be able to find it on iTunes or a torrent somewhere.

Interesting idea, now need to be done more reliably and widely:
location (town and place), more sample, not droping in the face of people, seperate group find, etc ?)
