I saw this in New Orleans years ago because I knew a guy who worked on the full body casts that were used for the sacrifice scenes. By the time I saw it, the entire staff had forced a total remake of the titles to remove most of their names (a la "Alan Smithee"). To me, the most diabolical casting was to make Wayne Mack the police chief. He was a kids-show host on channel 4, for cryin' out loud. "The Great McNutt" strikes again!
I have seen this movie at least 20 times. Yes, it is truly a horrible movie, but it is in no way boring. In my collection of many 'bad' horror movies of the 60's and 70's, this rates at the top for uninitentonal humor. That the reviewer doesn't comment on either 'The Fish' or the disco scene is a shame. They are priceless moments in cinema history.
Mardi Grass Massacre has picked a likely location since New Orleans unfortunately has been the US murder capitol for a while now. Too bad it's a boring flick.
It is a nasty under the true sense of the term in that it was on the DPP 74 list (wikipedia has a good article on it including the list of the films I'm working from) and it does have its moments. On the whole it aint great but it is worth a watch
stop me if you've done it already and i'm sure you've heard of it already but you should check out "last house on dead end street" (not to be confused with the deodato drek "house at the end of the park." damn weird, interesting movie and the director commentary is a real slice of Z-grade movie history.
@MisterRiffley Last house on DES is great, the late director ROger Watkins very interesting guy who wound up making arty XXX films like Midnight Heat and Corruption in NYC with Jamie Gillis, who is also no longer with us.. (very recommended)
It wouldn't surprise me if the BBFC would still want cuts.. They have a thing about sexual violence being eroticised, e.g the girls tied up and screaming would probably be a problem.
I wouldn't class the violence as particularly sexualised because the intent of the killer is not one of sexual gratification and he shows no sexual reaction to his deeds. Indeed the character is not at all interested in sex I think.
I don't think that the nudity or restraint itself qualifies it as sexual, the pretense of sex is his lure, but I understand where you're coming from though I think Hostel is a much more sexualised kind of violence than this ever could be seen to be.
It would definitely be released uncut I reckon. It's tone may be a bit off kilter but there's nothing particularly offensive I can see. Not in comparison to the likes of Saw or Hostel
Great review as allways! I think this film was a porn film makers attempt at the horror genre. The bad cuts probably existed purely because they had nothing else to cut too! He just plonked the camera down and let it roll. No tracking shots etc or even basic scene coverage. The only camera moves he new were zooming in for the money shot!
Great review as always Glenn. The PC police shouldn't have any problem with it hopefully. That whole 'evil woman' shtick still makes me smile and want to see the film all the more. Sounds so corny.
It's a curious film and I laughed on a few occasions. It's not great to be a fully recommended film but if you're in the mood for something very camp and more than a little weird then go for it.
good review glenn. Personally i fucking hate MGM. A poor mans rip off of blood feast (and that's a fucking poor man). Re-using the same footage & music over and over for the murder scenes..Ugg so dull. Still at least the disco music adds an edge, groove away whilst watching.
cut, as though to tell the public 'It's ok to watch our movies, all the bloodshed, rape, depravity etc has been removed' and now these films selling points are, well, quite the opposite. And when you consider before these films were horded in cardboard boxes in closets, and now many are fully fledged classics of cinema you can buy in any major DVD shop, and you won't get a single strange look. Change of times much.
Oh and just a random thought about the nasties. I find it funny in the last 10-15 years, being a video nasty has given these films something a lot of them don't deserve. Back in the 80s, the majority of people would see nasties as disgusting pieces of trash, and now their seen as genuine film phenomna by film lovers, and horror fanatics in particular. Many of these film sell themselves by putting in giant block letters UNCUT on the box are, yet before they would often advertise themselves as

Never heard of this nasty before to be honest, although I am interested in them a lot.
This looks like a lot of cheesy fun. Gotta love the "Evil"-dude.
"Censored for your health and safety" - I wonder if that was a lil nack towards someone specific lol
The poster art looks great. Don't think I'd have to own this on DVD, but the poster would fit my wall just fine.
Can't wait for your Killer Nun review, especially since I have that one in my collection.
Excellent job as always, Glenn!

This video shows screenshots women wearing slightly skimpy outfits. By the laws of YouTube I must declare this video is truly......
Evil.
FargoDog 2 years ago
I'm so glad the.......evil...thing is catching on. LOL
though it really should be eeevil just to accentuate how evil it is.
As for the scantily clad ladies.... you have no idea how hard I work to avoid anything too risque. this movie has plenty of nudity.
lampyman101 2 years ago
The movie seams like a really good movie but that might just be cause it is very trimmed down.
Killer Nun, what a killer name!.. or might I say evil?
TheKisura 2 years ago
you may say................evil, but you must pause for dramatic purpose before you ever say...........evil.
It's a weird and mostly bad film but I kinda enjoyed it to some extent because it has a strange and kitsch pseudo porn aspect to it that is kinda fun.
