Your tape playback was running at a different speed to your recording! A real pain when that happens. Most of my recordings are also so affected :(
Don't lose the tape - try to find somebody who owns a deck with pitch control and if you find such a fortunate/foresighted person, let me know - please?
The problem with manipulating digital audio data is that the interpolations needed to reconstruct what would have been the digital image had the tape been run at the correct speed are, inevitably, guesses. You get a more accurate transcription by sorting out the playback problems in the analogue world.
I've probably not expressed that perfectly but do you see my point?
Having said that, the chances of my being able to afford a Nakamichi Dragon (or similar) or even finding one still in good nick are pretty slim. I rather wish they hadn't been so quick to abandon the cassette tape format market they had dominated for so long.
So it looks like I will have to take my existing rather naff CD format transcriptions and try to digitally correct speed and equalisation problems. I have tried this already with abysmal results.
When I get used to the idea of there being no alternative to doing this, which will take me some time - I'm funny like that. I will have to find suitable software. I gave up on Windows quite some time ago so I doubt I could use Sony's Sound Forge but I would welcome a recommendation for something with a Linux version.
Thanks for that, I know nothing about portastudios but, now you've said it, it does make sense that they'd have a pitch control.
Checking for prices on eBay, I find that somebody is flogging a Dragon and that the bidding is still quite cheap. Then a shock - the flagship Nak deck did NOT have pitch control. I certainly couldn't find it on the many front panel photos.
What year was this? And how many time was Victoria Wood on this?

well then your best bet i'd say would be a cassette 4 track recorder, that will have the speed controll you're after.

Anyway, prices look well out of my range for the moment. Perhaps after a bit of saving. Thanks for the tip!
