With a name like "Derek" it seems fitting that he wails next to Eric. It's apparent that he a virtuoso and possibly the best on the stage in this one.
Trucks is terrific on this...I am always amazed at electric guitarists who don't use a pick, and Trucks has excellent technique and articulation without one...Of course, it makes it easier to do certain 'smears' and things like that, because of the flexibility of the fingers.
I fucking love this version man. Liz Reed is my all time favorite song so I am always tracking/cataloging my favorite versions and this is one of my favorites. Eric and Warren and Derek all put their hearts and soul 100% in their guitar playing, it is inspiring
Derek's pre-slide solo section sounded almost like Dickey Betts mated with a Bebop sax player. Amazing. This cut's maybe a hair slow at the beginning though.
All three of these cats can REALLY play...I think Derek really has a unique style....the way he uses his fingers and right hand is amazingly unique....
Derek's tone is UNREAL. I love the sound he gets out of that SG. Just unbelievable. I remember when this tour happened and I never did get to hear them do Layla, which I heard they did on a couple of different nights. I would love to hear that one!
Even though Trucks is a good guitarist in his own right, I think that he should've been nervous playing a lead next to Clapton! Though I have to admit that Trucks is a maniac with his finger-picking, tone and slide guitar talents!
@Ningirsutyr Normally I would agree with you but Derek had been playing in EC's band for a couple of years by now. I think any nervousness had been well worked out by this point
I get the impression the guys did not rehearse this one much-it's a tricky piece with exacting unisons and harmony and Jazz at its soul-perhaps not quite in the pocket as much as the other songs were; I like the looseness personally.
@gwbdopesmoker i digg you man, good as Derek is.....mind blowin most the time, just ain't the same, can never quite touch either of them from that time in my opinion
if ya want perfect Music, stay home and listen to yer CDs--DON'T go to a concert...Derek is an alien...Clapton knew he'd have to do more than just play Albert King licks--being out of his comfort zone was good for him...
Derek seems to have zero soul, zero energy, and I hear him make quite a few mistakes (@1:20 esp). Clapton just flows. Of course it's a privilege to play this for Clapton. Trucks does it every day I guess. But he's got nothing to my ear. Technically OK, but there's nothing there. ABB recent incarnation is boring and uninspiring compared to the past.
@walrus108 Derek's soul, AND energy, is put into the effort of playing music. YOU, however, have ZERO capability of listening to music. If you just realized how much Derek works his ass off daily just to make the slightest sign of a smile come to a face you would be crying. As for his mistakes, it's not like you yourself haven't made a petty mistake in your life. As for Clapton, he's up there doing what? Yes, Clapton is a great vocalist and guitarist, but he can't touch Derek.
hey its cool man, there jammin it tho at 1:20 its why hes behind a bit, but appreciate how hes just smoothing it out (3 guitar players at the same time, rough to just wing it) and then when each one gets some later tho, its hot stuff
@walrus108 While learning to play the sarod, he also found himself schooled in discipline, which in one manifestation, shows in Trucks' posture on stage. Striving to focus entirely on his performance accounts for his lack of movement around the stage, where he rarely moves from the same spot for the duration of each song.
Trucks and Haynes skill cant touch this song, the way Dickey did (does) it. As for Clapton, I won't even comment. Clapton trying to do ABB or Dickey music is a joke.
Just got my copy of htis show from "Hittin the Note" merch.. The whole show is awesome. Great quality plus EC jammin with the best band going, even without former members. It's still the brotherhood. Peace
He is using harmonics and thru finger vibrato technique,it seems that inthe beginning with EC they were trying to fit together and for some reason it was not coming together.Derek is a great guitarist and Ec well what can I say
@Johng10000 I think that Warren is in awe to be playing with such people as Clapton and Trucks, even though he has played with those guys many, many, times. Warren is a very humble dude.
you know how they say staring at a fishtank does wonders to lower one's blood pressure...well staring at this vid did something to my body that I can't quite put into words. Perhaps the finest piece of work on Youtube EVER. At 6:16 I started getting bummed out that it was about to end.....on to part 2.

The best jam song ever written. Good to see the ABB performing this great Dickey Betts classic again. Long live the Ramblin' Man!

Why should Trucks be nervous?
When you are that good and can hang, even outshine Clapton you have nothing to be nervous about.
Plus Clapton don't have a "I'm greater than thou" attitude anyways.
You go Derek, as not many guys can do that solo work as good or better than Duane Allman as only Trucks can.
Trucks is a cool custome, don't showboat and just gets up there to jam, very humble guy.

Yeh, Derek is INSANE. Even his little fills in the beginning part of the song -- so stylish and shows his command.
