@hilofoz right, this is the way you would have heard it played when it was first released in the 16th century. Much of Classical music from the Baroque forward has it's roots in Renaissance music. You will hear subtle references to things like "rock a bye baby" and other lulabies and foks songs in Classical music. Remember, music comes from people, and before there were organized groups of musicians there were the "trubadors" that wrote and played songs like this.
Fantastic. Absolutly fantastic! We're doing divisions on greensleeves to a ground to play with a recorder consort. You're our inspiration. Thank you...
I can agree in that it is a post performance after when the song was sung - this version is a dance, the last triplet sequence is obviously a Galliard, and it has got the reverence at the end of it - that last chord.
@kingbilgames True, but they usually mean they wished we had some of the romantized aspects of those times, like knights, royalty, great music and culture, values, etc...just imagine if this was popular enough to be on the radio!
You are naming a genre with formal characteristics that include the characteristics of Greensleeves, yes: namely a short repeated bass line and resulting harmonic structure. But -- this IS a clear variant, among many possible and even extant variants, of the melody that belongs to Greensleeves, whether you can discern it or not; so you can't say correctly that this posted piece is a piece that shares those structural characteristics, but nonetheless is NOT Greensleeves, or divisions thereon.
It's lovely, a wonderful, inventive set of "divisions". The melody is not hanging out consistently in the top voice in an obvious way, and there is excellent period ornamentation, so maybe some people cannot hear it. It certainly is Greensleeves. Catch it for sure starting at 2:52 in the flute.
@manthasagittarius1 I tried but couldn't catch the melody, neither at 2:52 nor anywhere else. Lovely melody and similar in structure to Greensleeves, but not Greensleeves.
@eireseeker You know, it's a moot point because it's not the music, it's the semantics naming the piece as either "similar" to Greensleeves or "a variant" of this folk tune. Variants of the tune have been transmitted orally by many people for centuries. That said, enough identifying features do mark this as Greensleeves, unless you either can't hear them, or your tolerance for variation is narrow, which is often an artifact of versions being made "definitive" or "authentic" by recordings.
Notice the change to 3/4 (or 6/8 if you prefer :) ) at 3:23
Not what most people think of when greensleeves is mentioned, but very nicely done, an interesting interpretation, and it's not in Dorian mode thank god!
It's true though, this is not Greenslevees, but a form of composition that was quite popular that time. Greensleeves was also made after that principle.
@KarlAmade Well -- I would say that's just incorrect, but I'm interested in hearing from you what popular "principle" you have in mind that generates a set of variations with not only a recognizable melody, but also with its harmonic structure, and yet is NOT a set of variations on that melody.
@Zarataphs It's several variations on a theme (quite lovely), but, unlike most such efforts, it doesn't bother to start off with the unaltered theme by itself (as in Bach's Goldberg Variations).
@PERROMALDO I agree..doesn't sound like Greensleeves at all and I'm well familiar with the melody. It's a beautiful arrangement, don't get me wrong, but I can't find any resemblance to Greensleeves in this melody.
@PERROMALDO4:20 is the definite proof that this is infact greensleeves ... and besides you can feel the melody throughout, not as distinctly though, but you can, when you hear hard enough
@PERROMALDO far as I've ever heard most Renaissance styles of a lot of musical pieces are more whimsical and sort of softer i guess, not sure how to word it. It's Greensleeves tho, plain as day.
@ultraviolent29: i agree. its like everything back then was intricate: music, fashion, household stuff and what not xD but anyways, this is a nice peice.

@eireseeker no this is how musicians of the time would've played it, improvisation is part of music, it has been proven by academics that a lot of renaisance, baroque and classical music was full of improvisation when performed live, if you want a perfect version create your own and then still see if you enjoy playing it 100 times in a row the exact same way. p.s listen to 2:52 when the flute comes in, as HAS BEEN SAID BEFORE thankyou, p.p.s stop trolling my comments
@btyremanable Disagreeing with an opinion is not 'trolling', unless you consider a troll to be anyone who doesn't share your own opinion or view. Also, if you're such a learned expert regarding 'academics' and what has been proven by them then you should use proper grammar, spelling and punctuation. So glad to hear a true renaissance version of this tune with all its variations. Such a delightful departure from all the cloying, drippy, "wedding music" versions out there!
i think baltimore consort is a type of "renaissance man", because, since today, never heard a group other than baltimore consort played seriously and focused on rennaisance music. very unfortunately..
LOVE Renaissance music. Very glad it's so readily available today. Years ago it was very difficult to find. Now I ask thee, wherefore art my knight in shining armor? ;-)
My mistake... is the Greesnleeves progression indeed. Is the time sig that confused me... I´ve always heard Greensleeves in 6/8 and this is a binary signature. cheers.
this is where the real music comes from, they actually had to put work into it, and they used their real voices, and had to play with all their heart for it to sound good. real music people. just sayin
I am trying to find a score for this specific piece for the classical guitar. But I don't have enough information to actually make a decent search for it. Who (if it is known) is the composer for this piece and it has a very different tune than the Greensleeves that we hear quite often. Could this piece have a different title?
@samirhossain I'm afraid I don't have a transcription of this particular piece, but I do have one of the tune we hear more often specifically for classical guitar.
@DungeonSeigeMaster - the song Greensleeves itself wasn't italian as far as I know but the style of composition certainly was and only reached Britain after Henry VIII died. I think I've heard somewher that it may be Elizebethan (but don't take my word for it)
Lovely variations. I agree that the notion that Henry VIII wrote it for Anne Bullen is nonsense. If Henry VIII did write it, believe me, he would make sure everyone knew all about it! The lyrics are a variation of "Paper of Pins" - I gave you this and this and this and that, but still you spurneth me. Where the melody comes from is lost in the mists of time, although if it did turn out to be Irish, I would not be too surprised.
@kopynd Actually, they do. In fact, this and many others like it if you know where to look for it. It isn't like music like this is an original recording from way back when.
...I walked through Edinburgh the other day and for whatever reason this song got stuck in my head...and I just stumbled across this wonderful piece of music today (yes, it has been stuck in my head for quite some time)...and it makes me smile...connected with beautiful memories of a lovely trip far away from home...I play piano and this was one of my first pieces I learnt...but this composition is just mesmerizing :)

LOVE Renaissance music. Very glad it's so readily available today. Years ago it was very difficult to find. Now I ask thee, wherefore art my knight in shining armor? ;-)

This kind of music has more talent than any modern music out there, yet I still like the modern stuff :D

My mistake... is the Greesnleeves progression indeed. Is the time sig that confused me... I´ve always heard Greensleeves in 6/8 and this is a binary signature. cheers.
HectiGonzalez 1 year ago
Sorry my ignorance... but isn´t this chord progression "Folias of Spain" rather than Greensleeves?
Great upload by the way.

Perhaps while listening to this, we could share a nice Chianti and eat Dr. Kevorkians organs along with some fava beans ?

this is where the real music comes from, they actually had to put work into it, and they used their real voices, and had to play with all their heart for it to sound good. real music people. just sayin

I am trying to find a score for this specific piece for the classical guitar. But I don't have enough information to actually make a decent search for it. Who (if it is known) is the composer for this piece and it has a very different tune than the Greensleeves that we hear quite often. Could this piece have a different title?
samirhossain 1 year ago
@samirhossain I'm afraid I don't have a transcription of this particular piece, but I do have one of the tune we hear more often specifically for classical guitar.

These were the true componists. Music of nowadays is too simple...

there is a certain feeling I get from the sound of renaissance music, but I can't quite put my finger on it! very mysterious.

@16reynoso That is exactly how I feel! It's so sweeping, powerful, passionate and mysterious.

Greensleeves was actually originally Italian and never reached England until after Henry VIII's Death.
DungeonSeigeMaster 1 year ago
@DungeonSeigeMaster - the song Greensleeves itself wasn't italian as far as I know but the style of composition certainly was and only reached Britain after Henry VIII died. I think I've heard somewher that it may be Elizebethan (but don't take my word for it)
brownhairedkid1 1 year ago
@brownhairedkid1 what i had said i got from wikipedia. so it must be true because wikipedia says if somthing hasnt been proof read.

@DungeonSeigeMaster I read that the "romanesca" style was Spanish...!

Class, they don't make music like this anymore
kopynd 1 year ago 67
@kopynd Actually, they do. In fact, this and many others like it if you know where to look for it. It isn't like music like this is an original recording from way back when.
