  • ...I walked through Edinburgh the other day and for whatever reason this song got stuck in my head...and I just stumbled across this wonderful piece of music today (yes, it has been stuck in my head for quite some time)...and it makes me smile...connected with beautiful memories of a lovely trip far away from home...I play piano and this was one of my first pieces I learnt...but this composition is just mesmerizing :)

  • at first it sounded nothing like the one i thought...but it is! sounds brilliant, been stuck in my head for a couple days now

  • Whoops

  • cuando caliente el sole

  • I just LOVE this version ... really wonderfull .. does remind me of a fancy time, ... and me walking as a wealthy guy .. and everyone bow for me ...hmmmmmmmm really stupid .. but it does remind me of Solitude in the new game called Skyrim .. me walking there as a noble man haha .. wonderfull music really .. LOVE IT .. really royal !

  • this is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard

  • in a word beautiful!!!!!

  • Where can we buy it?

  • Если еще вспомнить, что якобы эту музыку написал Генрнаих 8 Анне Болейн, то мелодия становится еще романтичнее!!!

  • Bravely bold Sir Robin! Brought forth from Camelot!

  • This is absolutely wonderful. The sublime melody always there, what joyful composition.

  • I wish i was born in that time

  • Loved it, just loved it. Is there a place were i can download the track?

  • make me think

  • A masterpiece!

  • Nice. That is Greensleeves alright. If you listen carefully, and slow it down in your mind, you will hear it.

  • @hilofoz right, this is the way you would have heard it played when it was first released in the 16th century. Much of Classical music from the Baroque forward has it's roots in Renaissance music. You will hear subtle references to things like "rock a bye baby" and other lulabies and foks songs in Classical music. Remember, music comes from people, and before there were organized groups of musicians there were the "trubadors" that wrote and played songs like this.

  • I regret that I have but one like button to click

  • this is nice

  • After a day of 'drama' as you may put it, this seemed to be the only song that really calmed me, and made me think clearer.

Wish they had a station with music like this on the raido. :\

  • Fantastic. Absolutly fantastic! We're doing divisions on greensleeves to a ground to play with a recorder consort. You're our inspiration. Thank you...

  • <3 <3

  • ..Half way through this I got up and started to dance

  • I can agree in that it is a post performance after when the song was sung - this version is a dance, the last triplet sequence is obviously a Galliard, and it has got the reverence at the end of it - that last chord.

  • youtube.com/watch?v=p7yQ5du0zg4 And this is like a.. eh, Mexican version of it?

    I hardly doubt.

  • It's not greensleeves - just a regular romanesque, which greensleeves happens to be as well.

  • This is lovely! Authentic Rennaissance, and very well done - I would be proud to be the flutist in this piece.....

  • Hey nonny nonny nonny

  • @commodore665 heeheee. I need to re-watch that movie again, I haven't seen it in ages~

  • @commodore665 Alas, Ophelia's gone mad(der!) ;)

  • I went out and blasted this in my car - nobody complained!

  • this is perfect for the type of song i was looking for thank you alot for posting this

  • That's just wonderful! :)

Thanks so much for sharing this!

I love this version of Greensleeves ^_^

  • @kingbilgames True, but they usually mean they wished we had some of the romantized aspects of those times, like knights, royalty, great music and culture, values, etc...just imagine if this was popular enough to be on the radio!

  • I have NO clue about what everyone is talking about.. I recognized Greensleeves immediately. And dang it sounds *B.A.Yutiful (*Beautiful)

  • You are naming a genre with formal characteristics that include the characteristics of Greensleeves, yes: namely a short repeated bass line and resulting harmonic structure. But -- this IS a clear variant, among many possible and even extant variants, of the melody that belongs to Greensleeves, whether you can discern it or not; so you can't say correctly that this posted piece is a piece that shares those structural characteristics, but nonetheless is NOT Greensleeves, or divisions thereon.

  • Yeah this is nice.

  • /watch?v=ZCJNQNSne6g

    Romanesca....

  • It's lovely, a wonderful, inventive set of "divisions". The melody is not hanging out consistently in the top voice in an obvious way, and there is excellent period ornamentation, so maybe some people cannot hear it. It certainly is Greensleeves. Catch it for sure starting at 2:52 in the flute.

  • @manthasagittarius1 Exactly, thank you for your input.

  • @manthasagittarius1 I tried but couldn't catch the melody, neither at 2:52 nor anywhere else. Lovely melody and similar in structure to Greensleeves, but not Greensleeves.

  • @eireseeker You know, it's a moot point because it's not the music, it's the semantics naming the piece as either "similar" to Greensleeves or "a variant" of this folk tune. Variants of the tune have been transmitted orally by many people for centuries. That said, enough identifying features do mark this as Greensleeves, unless you either can't hear them, or your tolerance for variation is narrow, which is often an artifact of versions being made "definitive" or "authentic" by recordings.

  • @eireseeker It enters for the first time around 0:31. It's in duple instead of triple time, but very clearly Greensleeves.

  • @AgnesRegina

Notice the change to 3/4 (or 6/8 if you prefer :) ) at 3:23

Not what most people think of when greensleeves is mentioned, but very nicely done, an interesting interpretation, and it's not in Dorian mode thank god!

  • @kungfuasgaeilge Why, it does have a meter-shift doesn't it. :) I do love this arrangement!

  • Deserves all my respect

  • riche, frais et subtil!

  • This is awesome. Sublime. Incredible. But it´s not Greensleeves. You can´t even recognize the melody if it wasn´t for the title.

  • @PERROMALDO What do you mean? The melody is right there. Even if you don't recognize it at first, doesn't mean it's not the same melody.

  • @Zarataphs Maybe it´s just me. I still don´t get it. But again, this is extraordinary.

  • @Zarataphs

It's true though, this is not Greenslevees, but a form of composition that was quite popular that time. Greensleeves was also made after that principle.

    salute

  • @KarlAmade Well -- I would say that's just incorrect, but I'm interested in hearing from you what popular "principle" you have in mind that generates a set of variations with not only a recognizable melody, but also with its harmonic structure, and yet is NOT a set of variations on that melody.

  • @manthasagittarius1

It is called a Romanesca - a form. Heard about Folia? Chaconne? Passacaglia?

  • @Zarataphs You'd be hard pressed not to recognise it at places like 0:34 - 0:44, I don't know what he's talking about.

  • @Zarataphs It's several variations on a theme (quite lovely), but, unlike most such efforts, it doesn't bother to start off with the unaltered theme by itself (as in Bach's Goldberg Variations).

  • @PERROMALDO I agree..doesn't sound like Greensleeves at all and I'm well familiar with the melody. It's a beautiful arrangement, don't get me wrong, but I can't find any resemblance to Greensleeves in this melody.

  • @eireseeker

It's definitely Greensleeves... it's just that the melody isn't obvious over the strings.

  • @PERROMALDO

I don't know what youre talking about. I'm tone-deaf and can recognize it clearly.

  • @PERROMALDO This is obviously not a musician that cant recognize the melody! Lovely performance.

  • @PERROMALDO 4:20 is the definite proof that this is infact greensleeves ... and besides you can feel the melody throughout, not as distinctly though, but you can, when you hear hard enough

  • @PERROMALDO far as I've ever heard most Renaissance styles of a lot of musical pieces are more whimsical and sort of softer i guess, not sure how to word it. It's Greensleeves tho, plain as day.

  • @ultraviolent29: i agree. its like everything back then was intricate: music, fashion, household stuff and what not xD but anyways, this is a nice peice.

  • this wins all

  • It's sad that music like this isn't appreciated as much as it should.

  • Music theory is music theory whether it be electric guitar or harpsichord

  • THIS NEEDS MORE COWBELL!!!!!!

I got FEVAH and the only prescription is MORE COWBELL!!!!!!

  • what an amazing version! one of the best I've heard

  • @btyremanable Amazing it is. But the melody never comes close to Greensleeves.

  • @eireseeker no this is how musicians of the time would've played it, improvisation is part of music, it has been proven by academics that a lot of renaisance, baroque and classical music was full of improvisation when performed live, if you want a perfect version create your own and then still see if you enjoy playing it 100 times in a row the exact same way. p.s listen to 2:52 when the flute comes in, as HAS BEEN SAID BEFORE thankyou, p.p.s stop trolling my comments

  • @btyremanable Disagreeing with an opinion is not 'trolling', unless you consider a troll to be anyone who doesn't share your own opinion or view. Also, if you're such a learned expert regarding 'academics' and what has been proven by them then you should use proper grammar, spelling and punctuation. It will give you more credibility when trying to prove a point. End of discussion.

  • @eireseeker Come, now. I am such an academic as you reference here, with grammar, spelling and punctuation as seemly as my lady might wish -- and perhaps it's I that have irritated you and provoked this comment. I regret it, if so. Nonetheless, he's correct. Whatever you think of the grammatical gift wrapping, the gift itself is worthy.

  • @eireseeker I challenge you to re-write my comment in 'perfect' grammar so that it will look acceptable then, professor eireseeker do you accept?

  • I bet in a past life I lived the renessiance and was royal because I've got a birthmark in the shape of a crown and I love the songs and somehow know a dance for them.

  • @CPbroad fuckin weird fucker

  • @nateduece Ahahahaha that is weird as shit isnt it? I bet this guy lights candles, dresses up like king henry, grabs a powdered wig and parades around in his living room while banging on a lute.

  • @mikeyxbriches you dong bang a lute D:

  • we need to start composing this genre of music, use your spare time to do it, we need some renaissance beatles like music not this noisy stuff ,

  • @1alvar ok. you start.

  • With this song,I can see Henry VIII. sitting opposed to me.

  • @ariaoflady Henry VIII was opposed to pretty much everyone.

  • Comment removed

  • Does anyone know where i can download this beautiful music?

  • This song is just amazing.... Somtimes I need a break from listing to autotune all day~

  • this music is so much more intricate than the music today

  • @ultraviolent29

I agree. I think playing the classical instruments takes waaay more skill than playing electric guitar.

  • @SuperSoupysoup even though i just liked your comment... i cant actually play any intsruments lol. i used to play flute but my littlefinger kept paralyzing so i gave that up. I think it takes skill to play any kind of instrument (except the triangle)

  • @gabi85colman

    Or cowbell. :D

  • i wonder what it would be like to live in the dark ages , probably couldnt see very much

  • @Mertius1 this was not made in the dark ages, this was made in Renaissance England, in the time of Tudors, King Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, one of the most romanticised and flourishing chapters of England's long history.

  • @ultraviolent29 u didnt get the joke

  • Wow, I love this interpretation of Greensleeves. Sounds oddly Italian somehow

  • Genius of its kind:) Renaissance forever!(L)

  • i love this....so warm...so something..i cannot pin it.i'm wondering about myself when i hear this piece againand again...i am a south indian, kerala christian ..from where i developed taste for this kind of music and era...

  • the Depeche Mode of it's time.

  • im the guy who love to dance on hip hop and rap and swag music and all that ! but music like this captures me ! i hope i dont sound gay !

  • @Aminovitch92i i like this kind of music so much, especially renaissance, middle ages and baroques tho i'm a rocker

  • @carldudesons so do i and i am a rockabilly/psychobilly...

  • @TheJoyful12 really?! we're in the same boat buddy!xD

  • @carldudesons ;)

  • @Aminovitch92i

There's nothing "gay" about liking this kind of music. People need to accept that whatever sounds good to them is fine. Whether you listen to Snoop Dog, Katy Perry, the Beatles, Mozart, or ABBA, it's all taste and opinion. Don't attach any negative connotation to any music, otherwise you're missing out!

  • @Kloborgg What if I listen to the Backstreet Boys and Justin Bieber? Am I a faggot or what?

  • @PTR131

    Yes.

  • @Kloborgg OK. Just remember not to attach any negative connotation to ANY music, otherwise you're missing out.

  • @PTR131

    Yes.

  • @PTR131 Of course my friend

  • @Kloborgg Well said! And actually it is easier to say that people who hate this music are cretinous than it is to say people who like it are ''gay'' (which is disgustingly homophobic anyway).

  • @Aminovitch92i Hahaha, there's nothing wrong. You win all people respect by liking this. I'm a metalhead and medieval and baroque songs have the same notes and times.

  • nee leute man ist in die renaissance zurückgereist und es mit nem handy aufgenommen während des gottverdammten rosenkriegs nhää ?

  • Not sure might be just my imagination or wishful thinking but life was simpler then, better in some ways. The world was uncharted the food was natural the world unpolluted, people ware less money corrupted.... Or so I imagine wile i listen to things like this.

  • @FicoFico79 It's just your imagination. Life sucked back then unless you were a noble and even then it was iffy.

  • @FicoFico79

The grass is always greener. Unfortunately life back then was pretty harsh. That doesn't mean our imaginations have to think that way! I have a fictional medieval/renaissance picture of life in my head that helps me relax sometimes.

  • Now this is music. I'd like to see some of the so called "stars" of today pull this stuff off. This is truly from the soul.

  • Amazing ..wish life and music was still this way.

  • @jkorpp God that would be terrible objectively!

  • @jkorpp Music? yes! But life in the renaissance was more than a little difficult for the average person. Be careful what you wish for.

  • @violatione Yes, and I am getting a little sick of people who medieval and early music comment boards talking about how good it would have been to live in those eras. It would not have been, they are being ridiculous. Peasants were treated worse than we treat criminals today!

  • Great version, thanks a lot!

  • So glad to hear a true renaissance version of this tune with all its variations. Such a delightful departure from all the cloying, drippy, "wedding music" versions out there!

  • i think baltimore consort is a type of "renaissance man", because, since today, never heard a group other than baltimore consort played seriously and focused on rennaisance music. very unfortunately..

  • LOVE Renaissance music. Very glad it's so readily available today. Years ago it was very difficult to find. Now I ask thee, wherefore art my knight in shining armor? ;-)

  • This kind of music has more talent than any modern music out there, yet I still like the modern stuff :D

  • i'm the 400th who like this song!!!

  • :)

  • excellent :) thanks for uploading this gem of history.

  • Absolutley Sublime piece of playing...Wow! Thank you for sharing this :0)

  • I love this music;)

  • I do want it's score !!

  • amazing!!!

  • My mistake... is the Greesnleeves progression indeed. Is the time sig that confused me... I´ve always heard Greensleeves in 6/8 and this is a binary signature. cheers.

  • Sorry my ignorance... but isn´t this chord progression "Folias of Spain" rather than Greensleeves?

    Great upload by the way.

  • I listen to this whilst chopping up dead bodies

  • @croogiie

Perhaps while listening to this, we could share a nice Chianti and eat Dr. Kevorkians organs along with some fava beans ?

  • @janedoe1024 Yes Clarice, yes, that would be nice. Always good to have an old friend for dinner.

  • @janedoe1024 Yes Clarice, yes, that would be nice. Always good to have an old friend for dinner.

  • @Iguana1138 Tubesteak, smothered in underwear?

  • @stanthology you're wierd

  • @stanthology @ Iguana. Thank you. You are too kind.

  • класс!!!!!!

  • who's the picture of?

  • this is where the real music comes from, they actually had to put work into it, and they used their real voices, and had to play with all their heart for it to sound good. real music people. just sayin

  • Nice version!

  • Beautiful.........where'd you get compositions like these from?

  • Fascinating music! ***

    Très bien interprété!

  • Awesome!!

  • I very love this song and this is a nice interpratation ^^

God.. What a wonderful music.. I never thought I'll say it, but it's better than Bryan Adams (my idol) :D

  • Wow! I can't imagine a nicer tune, probably it appeals to genes of our souls, thats why.

  • I am trying to find a score for this specific piece for the classical guitar. But I don't have enough information to actually make a decent search for it. Who (if it is known) is the composer for this piece and it has a very different tune than the Greensleeves that we hear quite often. Could this piece have a different title?

  • @samirhossain I'm afraid I don't have a transcription of this particular piece, but I do have one of the tune we hear more often specifically for classical guitar.

  • These were the true componists. Music of nowadays is too simple...

  • there is a certain feeling I get from the sound of renaissance music, but I can't quite put my finger on it! very mysterious.

  • @16reynoso That is exactly how I feel! It's so sweeping, powerful, passionate and mysterious.

  • watch out for flying chicken legs!

  • Don't let the bed bugs bite!

  • I am speechless. I am without speech.

  • Greensleeves was actually originally Italian and never reached England until after Henry VIII's Death.

  • @DungeonSeigeMaster - the song Greensleeves itself wasn't italian as far as I know but the style of composition certainly was and only reached Britain after Henry VIII died. I think I've heard somewher that it may be Elizebethan (but don't take my word for it)

  • @brownhairedkid1 what i had said i got from wikipedia. so it must be true because wikipedia says if somthing hasnt been proof read.

  • @DungeonSeigeMaster I read that the "romanesca" style was Spanish...!

  • Lovely variations. I agree that the notion that Henry VIII wrote it for Anne Bullen is nonsense. If Henry VIII did write it, believe me, he would make sure everyone knew all about it! The lyrics are a variation of "Paper of Pins" - I gave you this and this and this and that, but still you spurneth me. Where the melody comes from is lost in the mists of time, although if it did turn out to be Irish, I would not be too surprised.

  • Class, they don't make music like this anymore

  • @kopynd Actually, they do. In fact, this and many others like it if you know where to look for it. It isn't like music like this is an original recording from way back when.

  • Amazing version so different but I Love it!

  • @OLaverty111 I'm with you on this.

  • @violatione So Glad you are!

  • WOW...SO DIFFERENT !!!
