  • To bad the audio is off.

  • Formidabilă orchestră.

  • search "Theodore Slutz" and this is the first video. I can't find it anywhere in the description though.

  • Best conductor with Best pianist with Best piano concerto ......

  • pure feeling bravo!!!!

  • that justin bieber comment above is well, it's just stupid, glenn gould talked about negation due to the divisive nature biased nature of perception, there is a video here somewhere about negation, i feel, and would be as so bold to think glenn would feel that his music is about going beyond such divisiveness through negation of music which is truly why it is ironic that 93 people liked that justin bieber comment and like Glenn Gould music, look up glenn gould system and negation

  • A match made in heaven

  • @trinaVIPiano Not exactly... Search out information about Gould, Bernstein, Brahms, and the NY Phil concert on April 6, 1962.

  • @youresomodest I did see a few great documentaries. Assuming ur referring to the hype about soloist vs. conductor, yes, Bernstein compromised (somewhat reluctantly) in the spirit of open-mindedness of Gould's interpretation. Gould & Bernstein deeply respected one another as musicians in my understanding, which is why Bernstein compromised the accompaniment for this performance.

  • it's completely out of synch!!!! eine Achtelnote!!!

  • As somebody has already asked - where do you find this recording in its entirety? Surely it must have been released on cd, no?

  • Una dinamica del genere meravigliosa, perfetta! Che dire? Eccezionale equivale a poco

  • BTW, there is no mention anywhere on this page that the piece is by Bach...

  • Does any one have the full recording? There is a complete recording on youtube of Gould playing this on another occasion, but it's not as good as this performance.

  • @steamednotfried Yes, of course , there is a release on Sony Classical: " The Glenn Gould Edition" with six piano concerts by BACH including this first one with Gould and Bernstein, enjoy it !

  • wonderful

  • perfekte!

  • Lovely!! Bernstein directing Gould! Awe!!! Awesome! What a sound! That tempo, the feeling!

  • @iadlaws dont think Gould was being directed by Bernstein at all :)

  • Respect

  • What the words can't express, he could express it with his art :)

  • this is so good...it is almost orgasmic.

  • wen gould plays it doesnt sound like bach

  • @Agomongo1235 I'm glad we have people like you who are at least 275 years old to explain to us what Bach sounded like. Without you we would be lost in interpretation. Thanks!

  • Sounded pretty good to me.

  • The playing of Bach is perfection...No, it cannot be explained by ordinary means and is indeed preternatural. Strange at certain times, evocative, and undeniably beautiful. When it comes to Bach, no other pianist comes close....It can only be perfection.

  • I can feel the piano wire running through him as he feels the notes while playing the keys to create the music I hear.

  • Great Video, I love the energy and focus that Gould plays with.

  • This is an excerpt from the documentary "The Creative Performer" - details at imdb.com. Hoping it is released on DVD some day.

  • So great!

  • @kolopaper123 Yes, it's a great recording

  • what is the piece he is playing ?

  • What is the title of this piece?

  • I am so happy to have come at last to the near-worship state of the remarkable playing (should I say celestial playing) of Gould. Hearing him partnered with the imcomparable Bernstein -- well, all I can say is that the greats of history may have sounded like this, and we are privileged to share in them.

  • Love it, I can listen for ever!!

  • Applause, Applause, Applause ! ! ! ! !

  • This is just amazing. I know many people has asked, but.. Where can I get the full visual recording of this?

  • @nobu0416 it was recently released in Japan, I can't link to it but try searching for this: レナード・バーンスタイン/ニューヨーク・フィルハーモニック ヒストリックテレビジョンスペシャル [DVD]

  • @dontthinkbutlook Found it!!! Thank you!!!!

  • This is Canada's apology to the world for Justin Bieber

  • @moogletotema apology accepted!

  • @moogletotema Apology accepted! :-)

  • @moogletotema hahhahaha lol

  • @moogletotema I agree but i can't forgive you to mention that nerd in a Glenn Gould post.

  • @moogletotema LMFAO, sorry even Gould doesn't make up for that castrated abomination

  • @rogerrobie68 are you retarded?

  • The 3 best minutes in music history.

  • Astoundingly good!!

  • thanks for posting! does anyone know where I can find the full version of this performance? (I have the recording, but I'd be thrilled to watch the whole thing...).

  • The last 5 seconds, by themselves, tell the whole story of the monstrosity MUSICAL, in addition to the piano. His movements are music.

  • this is one of the finest recordings of the d-minor (d-moll) keyboard-concerto.

    I love it!

Gould's playing is perfectly transparent. You can see all the fugal symmetries in structural or mathematical representations in front of your imaginary eyes...

  • Gould - Genius - Gould

  • I love Glenn Gould. You can hear each and every note evenly and clearly.

  • When Glenn plays you just have to listen.

I was about to do something when I thought I would put this on and have it in the back ground.

Had to sit down and listen to this magic.

    Thank you for posting this.

  • "There is nobody quite like him, and I just love playing with him."

    L. Bernstein when referred to Gould.

  • One of teh best pianist of all time and the best conductor of all time. Brilliant!!!!

  • are you sure it's Bernstein ?

afaik, this is Karajan / Berlin

  • @Kullervo7 if you pause it at 0:09, you can tell that is bernstein

  • John, isn't it called diminuendo? But the clarity of the his pianissimo is technically baffling

  • the best decrescendo i have ever heard.

  • @Achtelnote Definitely agree! And also forces you to listen more closely.

  • I will listen all day!!

  • dammm<3

  • picture is lamentably out of sync with the music

  • What piece is this?

  • @ShittiestChannelOnYT It's the end of the first movement from JS Bach's Concerto for Piano in D Minor. In case you want to hear the entire movement from the beginning, search in YT Glenn Gould, Bach D Minor. Glenn there plays with a different orchestra and conductor, but they are just as worthy of accompanying Glenn.

  • @simcha181818 Wonder if this performance is available on CD or DVD?

  • @Tdgonline I don't know the answer. I read an earlier comment in this thread that there may be a recording in the archives of the Bernstein family. In short, all hope is not lost. Until such a recording is released, if at all, I suggest you listen to the same concert played by Glenn with the orchestra of Ottawa. Both the conductor and the orchestra have done a truly excellent job.

  • @ShittiestChannelOnYT : This is Bach's d minor keyboard concerto, 1st movement. BWV 1052

  • the most beautiful hands, perfectly born to lay down with care on a fingerboard

  • As Peter Schikele once said, "If it sounds good, it IS good."

  • jeeze guys must you comment on everything the guy does? cant you just listen and enjoy? if you dont enjoy it then dont listen and dont comment. sheesh

  • Colorful with a "U" for unsophisticated...someday you will be mature enough to appreciate Gould...until then go tinkle the ivories and inject yourself into the music, drowning out all but your ego....

  • Gould was uncanny in his ability to extract from the notes the music that lay hidden deep within the contours and recesses of the score.

    Illumination was GG's aesthetic.

  • I think I've just had the best 3 minutes of my entire life

  • Two great masters--and they aren't playing Brahms-----Thank God.

  • best version of all

  • I just so love this video.

  • WOW

    THIS - IS - A-M-AAA-Z-I-N-G

  • Indded, music is for everyone. But by making sweeping statements such as “his [Glenn’s] Mozart is atrocious. His Bach is mediocre.” about one of the most accomplished musicians you signal to your audience that you are a fool and an ignorant. It would be comparable to my saying that Modigliani or Edouard Manet are trash.

  • No matter all comments,It hits me.

  • @colourfulwithaU

you are only 19, and that's exactly why. you are a kiddo, gould is a master. There is no way that you can appreciate his depth. You will just be an unknown pianist at best.

  • @omnishubo

No...I can appreciate the depth of great pianists. I would appreciate Gould's depth if he had any. When he plays the fortepiano it sounds as though he is playing on an electric keyboard. It's without beauty. Why all the hype over him? Listen to Trevor Pinnock play this piece on an instrument with no dynamics, and it is still more beautiful than Gould's (link: watch?v=Kpqm1hxgH-w).

  • @omnishubo

Ton Koopman is another relatively unknown interpreter of Bach who exceeds Gould by miles and miles and miles.

  • @colourfulwithaU Ton Koopman, "another relatively unknown interpreter of Bach". You are off again. Koopman may be unknown to you, but he is well known and appreciated in the music world. Wake up man and know your place.

  • @simcha181818

I know I am not a pro, and I never claimed to be. Ton Koopman is not unknown to me, but more people know the name Gould than know the name Koopman, and I don't understand why, since Gould is far inferior.

  • @colourfulwithaU Did it occur to you that maybe, maybe you are not qualified to render an opinion on someone in Glenn Gould's league? Maybe some humility is called for? With regards to Koopman, ask 10 real professional musicians to list the 5 best recordings of Matheus Passion and Johannes Passion. Nine of the 10 will include Koopman's recordings among their list of 5 best.

  • @simcha181818

Did it occur to you that the professional opinions are not the only opinions that matter? Did it occur to you that music is for everyone? I do not like Glenn Gould and I am stating the reasons. There is nothing wrong with that.

With regards to Koopman, ask ten nonmusicians if they know Gould, and if they know Koopman. More will know Gould.

  • The orchestra is great. The pianist, not so much. =/

  • @colourfulwithaU oh we're sure you could have done a better job.

  • @sowhat123

What a stupid comment. Just because I criticise someone, doesn't mean I'm sure I can do a better job. For instance, I can't sing, but that doesn't mean I can't see that Ashlee Simpson can't either. But you know what? Glenn Gould is a much better pianist than I am, but only because of his extraordinary technical prowess. If I had been playing as long as he had, I WOULD do a better job. His style is flat and ugly. His Bach is mediocre, his Mozart is atrocious...

  • @colourfulwithaU please spear us your could haves and should haves. this man can fart music better than you can begin to imagine. I mean criticizing him is understandable but your argument has no base. He is just a better pianist just because of his technical prowess? His bach is atrocoius? Glenn Gould's bach is atrocious.. EXPLAIN...

  • @sowhat123

I didn't say his Bach is atrocious. I said his Mozart is atrocious. His Bach is mediocre.

He is a better pianist than I am because he is capable of playing faster and more lucidly than I can.

But his interpretations are terrible because he 1) ignores the composer's wishes (especially when that composer is Mozart); 2) plays on an overwhelmingly flat dynamic plane; 3) adds in his own frills and ideas which are not nearly as interesting or creative as he'd like to think.

  • @sowhat123

Compare these two versions of Mozart's sonata in A minor...Glenn Gould's version is careless and ugly; he sounds as though he is a computer. Uchida's sounds like a human playing an instrument.

    /watch?v=Byd9V5j8cTM

    /watch?v=vlYPLeimMSA

  • @sowhat123 Please,, please ! Don't ask that idiot to do something that he would have a better chance of going back to his mother's womb!

  • @colourfulwithaU And your mother dresses you funny !!!

  • Comment removed

  • @colourfulwithaU " If I had been playing as long as he had, I WOULD do a better job." It's all sour grapes. Many people practiced more than Glenn and tried real hard, but got nowhere. He had something that you and I don't. At least, have the decency to shut up if your envy doesn't let you give Glenn what's due to him.

  • @simcha181818

I am not envious of Gould. I just find him distasteful. What I am saying is to be taken at face value: I do not like Gould's piano playing. If I played LIKE him, I would be horrified with myself, because I hate his playing. Later in my life, I will have practiced as much as him or more (I'm only 19), and I will be able to play these pieces with more of a spark than Gould ever had. It's silly to equate my dislike of Gould with jealousy or 'envy'.

  • @colourfulwithaU Let's face it. You're an amateur that lacks any kind of modesty or sophistication. There are many that have greater technical prowess than Glenn Gould. Your assumption that Gould is better than you solely due to technical skills alone only displays your ignorance. There are 20 year olds that are already being compared to the "greats" in technical skills. The fact that you have not even reached near that kind of level shows that you are not nearly as determined as they are.

  • @Enix5548

No. Not at all. I said that GOuld is better than me because of his technical prowess BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING TO HIS INTERPRETATIONS. There are great pianists who actually do justice to great compositions (Richter, Rubinstein, Kissin, etc.) and Gould is not one of them. What ignorance is being displayed here? I know that there is more to music than technical prowess, but Gould displays none of it, and only plays mechnically.

  • @colourfulwithaU I am a professional concert violonist. I played in Israel, Germany, France, Austria, and Switzerland. You are not a pro. It may be novel to you but it's not to the world that Glenn Gould's rendering of Bach works is exceptional AND superior to that of S. Richter, A. Rubinstein. I don't think Kissin is in this league at all. And this doesn't take away anything from the undeniable greatness of S. Richter, A. Rubinstein.

  • @Enix5548

Also, the fact that I have not reached that level shows nothing except for the fact that I have only been playing classical piano for fourteen months. I have actually progressed very well for that time (if you're going to ask where my videos are, they are coming soon).

  • Some of the great conductors of his time hated his habits, but also said afterwards that his performances were all worth it, the best they have experienced. He had such clear visions in his music and passion. The interactive between him and the audience and the awareness of the orchestra, conductor that he has is so rare. Determent and mature.

  • There was no pianist like Gould - a genius among so many genius performers of the last 200 years .... he died much too early ... just about everything he recorded (and played) ... stands out for its special character - his reputation just continues to grow, if that is possible.

  • this is played very, very beautiful and with great passion!

    THX Glenn

  • Beyond . . . . Absolutely Beyond ! ! ! !

  • 1:58-2:01 gives me blissful chills. anguished yet exquisite.

  • There are good pianists, there are excellent pianists, and there is Glenn Gould.

  • @simcha181818 Amen to that!

  • @simcha181818 It's the end of the 1st movement from Bach Concerto in D minor.

  • Absolutely in sync with each other...Arghh, I can't stop.

  • This is so awesome o.O..What is is that makes this performance different..? Wow

  • Glenn Gould is famous pianist ever. He plays piano most perfectly. I ever seen any body who can play a piano more perfectly than him among modern players.

  • @txdiversity I will get in trouble by saying this but in my view. Gould is the best pianist on planet earth.

  • Inexorable as the death.

  • best music in history of mankind.

best written music, played by incredible gould and directed by fascinating lenny.

  • Just found this one with Glenn Gould and Bernstein

  • Is that Pablo Casals or Starker on the cello?

  • fantastic!!!! awesome to watch as well as hear

  • An amazing decrescendo, long steady just perfect. It seems like just when you think it's leveled out he gets lower and lower, maintaining perfect tempo and clarity. Lower and lower to almost nothing, then lower still. The crescendo which follows seems rushed and overbearing, but only in comparison to the perfection, both mathematically and emotionally, of 1:13 to 1:38.

  • johnlervin - beautifully said. the only parallel i've heard is lipatti.

  • In my opinion the greatest pianist of the 20th Century. I can pick him out just by his technique. I happened to be at this particular concert. Am I allowed to ask where you got this clip from (Fowler says this is ok) or is there a longer clip available.

    Thanks

  • 1:13 = absolute agony...

  • My favourite piece of Glenn Gould! I watch it from time to time and still marvel at his talent.

  • AAAAArghh..this is so darn wonderful!!

  • WHAT A SENSIBILIY!!!!!!!!!!!

  • pure genius!!!!!!! Wordless

  • is the branderburg concert?¿

  • @pako1689 it's the Concerto in D minor, BWV 1052 first mvt.

  • One of the most remarkable decrescendos and crescendos in recorded history. Gould is Godly in this moment.

Is there a complete recording of this somewhere?

  • rivetting

  • you cannot dislike this music, youtube should ask you : Do you like this video ? then, YES / YES

  • I dunno. I've always found piano concertos to be a bit wacky in general. Even here, with Glenn Gould and Leonard Bernstein, I just don't hear the compatibility between the piano and the orchestra. Violin concerto, yes; the soloist can recede and come forth as needed, but a piano? It's always literally and figuratively front and center. It seems more like a battle of the bands than a unified whole. Your thoughts?

  • The major disagreement between Bernstein and Gould was for Brahms no. 1, not this one.

  • Maybe there is something so beautiful, but there is nothing more beautiful than this

  • Bernstein and Gould had a major disagreement on this concerto and it's interpretation, in the end Glenn won but Bernstein announced to his audience prior to the performance that he did not care to be associated with this interpretation and was conducting as obligation and as an open listener. Classic conductor vs Soloist.

  • @thestringdreams

No, the alleged disagreement which you are referring to was about1962 performance of Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1 with the New York Philharmonic.

  • GENIUS.

  • 2:05

  • love when the counterpoint comes into play at 2.11

  • @winksie you mean at 0.00

  • I think he was simply reffering to that specific section, not implying that it was the only section.

  • I woke up from the most beautiful dream last night with an auditory hallucination of this lasting a few minutes. It was so fucking brilliant.

  • I wish Glenn lived longer. He was so talented.

  • Un génie musical à l'état pur!!!!

  • It is unfortunate for all of us that Gould died well before his time. What a loss!

  • Shivers down the spine

  • Pss noooo puede ser.... esta muy bueno eso... como se llama es Roooolaaa?

  • Wow, Gould and Bernstein together, playing this piece.

YouTube, each day you wonder me anew.

  • Well, two truly greats (s'pose most of us'd agree) in an era of musak and preachy folk musak and mechanistic musak. All is not lost, is it ? Is it ?
