I am a Bus Driver and if you don't get to the stop on time sometimes the passengers curse you out. Always wanted to be a truck driver but the Bus job i got pays well and i get to go home every-day.
Do truckers get rushed by dispatch? whats up with them speeding??? where are they getting that from??? whose making truckers speed? like what? money bribe? sleep time bribing? fuck that
Some people like myself whose parents grossly DO NOT support college oppurtunities want me to work a full time job to get the fuck out of their house and with no responsibilities I feel taking this stupid military living like job over my dockworker 10hr job anyday, paying fam...I mean tyrannic profligates rent because they live a lavish life really does fucking suck
One of these days ill have enuff money to buy a plot of land off of 95 some where between NYC an Baltimore..charge $1 for parking a night for trucks and retire in 6 months..
Truckstops fill up after 7 pm?? Sheeiitt try fill up 2 hours before dark! Get there early and get the spot! Oh and also where shoes in the shower! Lol
Yep, get there early and do all your goofing around or whatever after you get there when you have all the time you need! He'll they may even unload you early. I get unloaded early about 50% of the time. Cool next load plz!
I have been waiting to the last min for years. thats why i bought a flat bed. vans and reffers have to many appointments. I like windows.like 7-5, and most of the time steel mills dont give a shit if you wait until the next day. they are never in a hurry to work.
I'm about to become a greenhorn myself I just have to retake the road test for my second time my first time I passed all my skills and pretrip tests though
Don't leave too early... You will burn your 14 hours up if you have a live load/unload...
know how far your are away from the destination, take into consideration, the speed of the truck, weight of the load in hills..etc etc... Wasting hours here and there will only cost you money in the end. Use common sense.
One time I got to a place in NJ at 6 pm, the place closed at 5;30 pm. So I figured I'd climb in the bunk and sleep till morning. I laid there for about half hour, the door yanked open on my truck (the doors didn't lock on my rag ass truck) and people started shouting. I got out of the bunk and there was 3 police cars there with the lights on. The cop asked me what I was doing, I was backed in to the door with a flatbed load of steel. Sheesh.
Sure you may have the obvious advise ''make sure you give yourself lots of time to get there'' haha gangster get outta that peice of shit plastic freight
You hit it out of the park on this one!!! The owner at my second job burned it into my brain about getting to a place early. Anything can happen, blown tire, traffic, whatever. And if you get there early, relax, chill. Most likely you will be the first one off or you could get somebody's appt. time because he decided to leave at the last minute and he's still 100 miles away. Still surprises me how many drivers leave at the last minute.
@vikingvic some of us needs reinforcement. That's why motivational materials exist, the church, license renewal, etc. it all serves as reinforcement to what we should already know. Plus, common sense is not always common practice.
The reason i felt the need to state that is because of how many people i see suffer negative consequences from not doing it.
Third, no, some people do not know. People become aware of things based on either what they are taught or what is normal to them.
I'm in knoxville tn I read your website and it's good info I thank you, for the pay thing when you mention the pay a year is that after taxes or before? like for a 1 year would the money be like 2500 a month max?(2500 X 12 months) based on cents per mile/state to state not just east coast like some trucking companies are?
It's common sense stuff but many, many people do not follow it at all, including regular 4 wheel drivers on the road. That's one of the reasons you always see so many people weaving in and out of lanes and driving over the speed limit.
unfortunately thats why the government is going to mandate we all go to electronic logs. i try to keep legal but on occasion its just unpractical. we need more flexibility and support. the dot would rather fine us that assist us to find safe parking for ten hours.
I agree 100%. It's always best to get started and finished EARLY in the day. Those truck stops fill up mighty quick after 7:00pm and you could spend hours trying to find somewhere else to park and sleep for the night.
@jloch85 yeah, that is a specific tip I forgot to mention about the truckstops in heavy traffic zones getting full in the late evenings, nice post jloch
you might be able to find an empty lot on the side of the road, but generally you'd wanna find a spot where other drivers are also parked for the night. if you just pull over to the shoulder of the road you might get a tap on your door in the middle of the night from a cop.
thats pretty stupid I mean if your in the middle of no where NO TRUCK STOP within like 100 miles or something i mean that tap could that mean like if there saying is everything ok? or as in you need to find a truck stop because I thought you can get in serious trouble if you drive over your legal hours theres a lot that doesn't make sense.....speeding.....forced resting at a truck stop and no where else
If you had a dedicated route man going through the house each way or each weekend man.
Other than that, I really wouldn't waste the money. Think about it. (Unless you have kids or something) Why not save all the dough you can, build your credit and buy a house in a year or two. There will still be great properties available for the low for the next 2 years from this recession. If you are single no kids there is no way I would rent.
I have been driving 22 yrs. Perfect driving record, no tickets no accidents. Then it happened Oct 2008 I dropped my first trl. Right off the back of my yard truck. Tore the landing gear out from under it and nearly tipped it on its side. ALWAYS GET OUT AND CHECK TO MAKE SURE THE JAWS ARE LOCKED!!! Even after all those years of experience I am still learning.
for me it was 40,000lbs and I did a stress test but I guess not hard enough. I was luck though, dropped the trailer in the yard, I was owner op and it just tore my glad handle off.
I was lucky.
YOur right, checking those jaws are the best safeguard, thanks for posting that man.
Since I dropped that trailer I check 2 or 3 times sometimes cause I can't remember if I checked. (cranking that trailer up with 40,000 wasn't fun)
I have 1 year under me, My advice is dont go team unless you want to carry around a free loader like I did starting out. Ive never been late unlike my co driver and have been as early as 24 hrs. I can do ( on a good day ) up to 700 miles (leagal) in one shift. Ive trained my body to handle that. With a team your 50% resposible even if your in the sleeper. You do more work for less pay. GO SOLO, if you want a rider take a friend or family member. as solo youll enjoy better sleep unlike teaming.
Ive been thinking about becoming a truck Driver here in South Texas. Im wondering how much is the pay(state-to-state)when you first start working? Compared to when you have already 1yr of experience. Money wise. Estimate plz.
For some people it would be fine though. The main thing is for people to do it because they like companionship not money. If you do it just for the money and your not really a social type you are a step closer to misery.
If you have the right mindset and your co-driver don't, you are still a step away from misery.
If your co-driver can't hold his or her own and you don't get along. . . .
Total misery and less money than you could make solo.
We even driver safer when we have that cushion instead of "making up time" on the highway.
(which is nearly impossible to do, especially with short runs. Planning to make up time while driving is a huge mistake drivers with poor habits make.)
Been there done that. Glad I learned like you turbulent
Ok so you say leave earlier right..my question is with a 10 hour break period how do you leave early
