Your mom's morals are in the right place. There is a big difference between morals and religion. Take this for example: You probably believe forgiveness is a desent act, yes? But you still don't believe in God. In retrospect, a lot of believers are ok with homosexuality. This brings out the creation of seperate religions. Just because you believe in God, doesn't make you a Christian. Its the (bad) moral system that makes you a christian, not the beliefs.

You seem to be worrying too much what to label yourself as. You don't have to call yourself an atheist or a christian. Your mom sounds like a reasonable person when she says she believes that there is some good stuff about christianity. I always asked myself if i'm a good person and if treat others fairly.

If my lack of faith sends me to hell so be it. When my life is over I'll know I was a good person.

lots of people make up their own religion. the only problem is that they are just making up an explanation to things they dont properly understand. this isn't really a pursuit of truth. why not just be honest with yourself and say you dont know how this or that happened, and until im presented with new evidence i simply wont assert anything? just seems more sensible to me not to invent a magical man to explain the formation of the universe, only to beg the question of that magical mans origins.
