I always liked the Byrds but Crosby was a butthole that had an ego problem bigger than Texas and there wasn't no conceit in his family cause he had it all. Now look at him. He's a fat old man that looks like he's 10 months pregnant. I'll say one thing though.....the sucker can sing.
I prefer this over Jimi's version, although I don't think there's a bad version of this song out there. Nick Cave, The Troggs, Love, The Leaves, Deep Purple, Robert Plant, Patti Smith....I've yet to hear a version of this song that isn't great. This version just captures a sense of urgency and fear that comes with killing your wife and her lover that Jimi's doesn't have. Jimi's is too mellow, and if you kill someone, chances are you're going to be anything but mellow.
I first heard this on a compilation album put out by the record label (I forget which one) called "Best of '66" which my PARENTS bought, to familiarize themselves with the music their kids were listening to, I guess. It also included "Homeward Bound" by Simon & Garfunkel and "I Want You" by Bob Dylan
guitar riffs remind me of eight miles high. crosby's voice is amazing. love this version, very different from jimi's but c'mon, you can't compare them, they played a totally different kind of psychedelic rock music. so don't fight here which version is better.
ummmm, wow! ! ! go figure. i can understanding having a party while in the 'garage,' however, whoever decided to release this, well, give a listen for yourself. . .very rare move.
@eslut3 This was before Hendrix. Still . . . you're right. Nothing comes close. A lot of bands did this before Jimi. The Leaves, The McCoys . . . none comes close. Still a dispute as to who wrote it.
Jimmie Hendrix is amazing with Hey Joe. The Leaves deserve the credit for this song that The Byrds don't come close to them. Where did The Leaves get this song?
@MultiCuordileone i knew someone would inject that and, as always, you are, once again, correct. thanks; we all need to hear from you, OFTEN. . .a bit of levity is a big help. . .
@ClueBand Yeah seriously. The Byrds were rocking this sound for a couple years, whoever's saying this sounds like the Velvet Underground... well lulz...
There's also Johnny Rivers version of Hey Joe off his "Realization" LP from 1968. It has a cool psychedelic sound to it. And get this, James Hendricks (no, not THE Jimi Hendrix) was the guitarist according to the album credits which I always found to be a funny, but odd coincidence.
Hey, hey, hey, hey Joe, when are you going to pull the plug on this song.....(loud guitar riff) (now I know where Joe was going with that gun in his hand, to shoot this version to pieces)..the Byrds should be ashamed......
Thanks for posting this clip! I really like the serpentine intertwining of the instruments...........a really unique interpretation of a rock classic. Of course I like Jimi's and the Leaves versions, and see no reason to even compare them. It think it says a lot for the song that so many artists have wanted to put their spin on it!
@lhcarter This was the best version done. However, I always used these lyrics but used the Standells 1966 version for the music, alot faster. So many people think Jimi wrote this song but better rock and roll versions exist. My band upgraded to "found my women messing with another women"...keeping up with the times...BILL
@TheParamountPrincess crosbys singing money not mud but hes mumbling it a little this is not on tv its off the record hes singing gun and found them both in the same damn bed so its not censored
My favorite version of this song. Great vocal, guitar and drum work. Nice "southwest" feel to it. Very original. (Hendrix was great, too, but this version tops his.)
@abingdon66 Those are two different versions, they just happen to have the same name. Jimi Hendrix's version was actually a cover of The Leaves' version. The Leaves were not well-known at all, they just had one minor hit called, "Hey Joe," and Jimi Hendrix happened to hear it. He liked it, and decided to cover it, but he completely redid it, other than the lyrics.
You guys and gals are blowing me away with my peachtree bottle from the local packy. I never knew that there was a "Hey Joe" before James Marshall Hendrix. Thanks to Oldcapellon...Dan O'Niallain

rlsain 2 months ago
@rlsain Some people say it's a traditional folk song that never got recorded. They may have heard some coffee shop style folk singer sing it first.
EmeraldFlowsion62 2 months ago
@rlsain Don't forget Tim Rose's version...even Love's version is worth a listen. Good bar band song.
