  • It's obvious this is a Postlude of a joyous service. Let's not be critical of an interpretation. Go Grandma! How many of us will be able to play at this point in our lives? Notice this is a tracker instrument. Go Mrs. Schreck!

  • She is nothing short of Amazing! I agree with accordion25 I would like to shake her hand to!

  • I think it sounds great!

  • Wow!!! Excellent!!!

  • Glorious!

  • wow, i did not expect to see that lady at the console!!! AMAZING!!!! loved it.

  • If installed in '87, why restored so soon? Was it just a change of mood of the church council, or need because of some damage?

  • Bad sound... and to much principals.

  • GORGEOUS CHURCH!

  • If you were there could you imagine that a granny was playing it in that way?

She rocks XD... Good work :)

  • Très jolie interprétation. Et la petite grand-mère à l'orgue se donne à fond pour la musique. Ca fait plaisir à voir... et surtout à entendre.

  • Happy New Year my Dear! 2011

    Keep it up

Praise God for your Organ Talents...BH Charlottesville, VA

  • Go granny! :D

  • A moving piece. This reminds me of the time when my grandmother would play the organ at San Sebastian in Tarlac!

  • Very nice!!!!!!!

  • go granny go! your rock the boat *excuse me* the church :D

  • Just great. Go ahead, Granny. Organo pleno!

  • Put Te Deum at Liverpool Cathedral in the search box here to hear a clip of how this should be played!

  • wow! ^_^ Sounds like someone half her age playing. Pretty cool in my opinion.

  • I have the great honor to know the oganist personally, and to have been a member of one of her choirs. Patty Schreck is simply the most dedicated servant of the Cathedral in Savannah... She has been playing the Cathedal organ and directing the choirs for over 60 years. She is a phenomenal musician and I take every opportunity, when in Savannah to attend mass at the Cathedral, Mrs. Schreck's music ministry is without match in dedication and style.

  • I'm from Savannah and Mrs. Schreck, Cathedral organist, is somewhat of a celebrity. When I'm home for a visit at Christmas, I don't miss the Midnight Mass. If you think Te Deum sounds great, wait til you hear her Joy to the World or the Good King Wenceslas postlude. She makes that Noack organ speak!

  • The interior of this cathedral reminds me of the old Roman Catholic church in Augusta that they moved out of years ago. Does anyone know if that's still standing and, if so, what is it used for nowadays?

  • how's that for heavy metal?

  • i personally don't care for the change in the chord structure, nor the 'Amen' at the end. But she plays well and seems to enjoy it :)

  • man, hat die kräftige Arme! : )

  • where the hell did the tacky secondary dominants come from?!

  • Awesome! Totally awesome! Thanks for sharing. And the commenter who complained about it starting off as "full organ." If you haven't learned by now, everyone has their OWN version of playing something.

    "God loveth even a fool."

  • Also known as the Eurovision tune.

  • La signora è un mito!!!! Charpentier all'americana! We love you madame!

  • that lady must love her job!

  • Just because you have never heard it performed with full organ doesn't mean its wrong or can't be done...Go grandma!

  • I just hope when I'm HER age,I'm doing something this great.I can't even play it NOW.

  • Nice! I hope I'm playing like that when I'm old too.

  • This is awesome, this sound of organ is perfect, that a Grandma.... This is perfect!!!

  • the great Mrs. Shreck!

  • My third grandmother! I have seeking You since 1947!

  • si c'est une vraie messe = bravo!!!

  • c'en est une et c'est la sortie: tu peux voir au début de la video l'assemblée qui quitte l'eglise et un enfant de choeur qui range

  • Bravo this video rocks, this lady is right up there with the big guns. I would like to shake her hand and kiss her on the forehead.

    Excellent job!

  • @accordion25 i agree, accordion! :)

  • Great insight. And, you're right. She drinks very heavily: lots and lots of water.

  • @punchthedog Well. It could be sound signal processing in recording device. Its too short band and compressed. All details in higher harmonics are missing->probably due agressive codec setting in device.

Even the analog cassette recorder with ordinary hifi microphone will have reasonable quality and not crippled like this.

Organ music requires best hifi recording know how in sound engineer side.

I'll better never criple music if i haven't chance for listenable recording quality.

  • I want that pedal reed on my organ!

Is it a contra trombone 16'?

  • wow!

  • Much too heavy and sluggish. The main melody would be good with a single solo, heavy pressure, reed.

  • eccellente la signora anziana ok

  • Actually perhaps the spirit of this performance is not that bad . . . look at the mechanical manual coupling - both Choir and Swell are coupled to Great and I bet the action on that instrument might not be light. She's probably battling against some interesting difficulties.

But registration might be the key. The style at Albi is to play on reeds alone without foundation. Try a 8ft Trumpet, 4ft Clarion, Mixture and if available an Octave Coupler. This can give a hint of Albi excitement.

  • Just listen to Albi Cathedral - 20+ reeds on an instrument contemporary with the composer. (And a real French finish). As for the comment re Mr Fox, listen to his destruction of Jehan Alain's Litanies, and compare with the YouTube performance of the same piece by Jehan's sister, Marie-Claire. It's like comparing popcorn with Fois Gras!

  • "Massive" intepretation of this Te Deum. Thus I like it like that too. Charpentier would be a little surprised I think, but maybe not angry.

Special thanks to the Grand Mother!

  • Comment removed

  • It's interesting to real how polarised the debate is for this piece. For my taste, I'd prefer a lighter touch.

  • i wish i could play like this GrandMother...

    Perfect organ,perfect organist.

  • Wish I could play that as spirited here in the mid 50's as Mme Organiste is playing in her 70's......?

  • It's beautyfull! The GrandMother plays magnificent!

  • nice but a fraction too slow

  • great red pleno :)

  • Glorious!Extraordinary! Beautifull - so powerfull!IN GLORIA DEI!

  • What's up with the swing?!

  • The swing?

  • I guess everyone is entitled to interpret a piece as they please. I prefer the piece to be played in a more classical fashion (see the St James Prague version with Orchestra especially on Youtube) but each to their own.

I play this piece on a romantic organ and I guess that would cause some people be reproachful as well!

  • Agree, it sounds like... too... much...

  • @NickFr66 Aw c'mon now...I hope to be able to play organ at her age! give the lady a break, man..sheesh! eveyone's a critic

  • @NickFr66 Aw c'mon now...I hope to be able to play organ at her age! give the lady a break, man..sheesh! everyone's a critic

  • @NickFr66 - oh shutup

  • @NickFr66 What an unkind and thoughtless remark. The fact that a woman her age is still able to share the gift of music and does it in such a confident way is to be commened. Of course, we are all entitled to our own thoughts concerning the interpretation of this piece, but to be so mean spirited is inexcuseable. I think Charpentier would be delighted in her efforts!

  • @jk8429 Are you french and do you name Marc Antoine Charpentier to take his place and tell us such a stupid opinion?

  • @frenchiecocorico1 Just because my opinion is different than yours, does not make it "stupid". You think differently than I do, but that doesn't mean your opinion is stupid. I leave tomorrow to visit France and learn of the culture, music, and tradition... I'm am very much looking forward to seeing your beautiful country!

  • @jk8429 No your opinion isn't stupid because it is different of mine but because you pretend to tell the true Marc Antoine Charpentier opinion. This is false and nobody can assert something instead of anyone else. You don't know M.A Charpentier thinking and me not.

Here is my opinion. Despite of the valuable effort of this granny organist, this rendition is horrible because it is far to respect the original interpretative qualities of this piece. This don't glorify nor this organist or MAC.

  • @NickFr66 Unfortunately your opinion is perfectly right and well described. But this kind of judgement dislike to the right thinking majority even if it is the truth. I may insure you that in anyway this highlight of french baroque music doesn't look like to this horrible din. I repeat rather than all the respect due to this venerable old lady, this performance doesn't glorify neither this organist, nor M.A Charpentier

  • Magnificent! To God Be the Glory

  • "Purists: Those who talk about it and can't do it" -Virgil Fox

    I think it was excellent

  • ... well, it WAS done in ("America")... could that be the reason?

That's a pretty nonconstructive comment but thanks for watching.

  • It wasn't my intent to be "constructive". I just simply described my impression of this performance.

Maybe low-quality of videorecording (or temple's acoustics)is at fault...

  • Without describing what you mean by "American" your comment isn't helpful because it conveys no thoughts. Many people enjoy this rendition. Many more do not. I'll assume you think it could have been better. I am unclear as to how you would improve it.

And, it's a Cathedral. A Catholic church. We don't do Temples.

  • I think that the 16 trombone' is brilliant for te deum.

  • This is probably the most "anglo-saxon" interpretation I've ever heard of this piece, and quite frankly, I LOVE it.

  • It's difficult to comment on this clip without upsetting people! I think this organ is amazing, and Mrs Schreck is clearly an accomplished organist -I hope she carries on!

*However* it would have been a better performance if the registrations had been varied, rather than playing the whole piece full-blast. Also, the chords in the l/h and pedal were often too static and clumpy.

*This is not, in any way, meant as an insult to Mrs Schreck* - I wish I could play the organ as well as she does.

  • Very nicely done. For those of you not familiar with the Cathedral and Mrs. Schreck, She has been playing there for over 60 years, and she is in her 80's. I say very well done, and I hope that I am doing that well at that age.

  • O.k maybe I'm being a bit critical. Hear! Hear! to you mbmale21 and good luck to Mrs Schreck. I hope she's still playing at 100!

  • Nice organ but over registered here and it seemed that the pedal line in this piece was missing, maybe this is the fault of the arrangement that Mrs Schreck is playing?

  • Perhaps. I prefer to see it as a stylistic choice which separates this rendition from all the others available. I also think the registration was appropriate for the situation, we're going for a "get out of my church" song rather than one to invite people to sit and listen. And, really, why have the organ if you're not going to use it?

  • Powerful organ, but rather clumy interpretation. "Elephantine", as William Christie said once.

  • I look forward to hearing your rendition. When will it be posted?

  • This is not a valid argument, you know. One can appreciate a rendition (or not) without even touching the instrument in his life. It is a matter of taste: that would`ve said a contemporary of Charpentier.

  • sorry, but the argument is very valid

    try and make it better

  • Great, Loads of power!

  • I had envisioned a big strapping male organist, till the camera panned around and revealed it was a little old lady! Well done, I loved that piece, played with ghusto.

Wonderful Trombone 16' stop in the Pedal Organ too - I want one :(

  • I really enjoy the sounds of this organ. Especially that very clearly defined 16' Trombone in the pedal! Thanks for posting

  • WOUNDERFULL! I would say, this is one of the greatest songs, I've ever heared! VERY NICE!

  • Patty Schreck is indeed the best organist and music director, ever! Anyone lucky enough to hear her is in for a very special treat: Sundays, Christmas Eve, Easter Vigil, St. Patick's Day...!

  • Very, very nice. Thanls for posting.

  • hey, my cousin sings in the men's choir in this church at the 10 am each sunday for mass. I always love hearing this organ
