Thanks so much! I've been attempting to accomplish this using Nikon's user manual for a while with no luck. This has me up and running within 4 minutes. Awesome! Thanks!
I have a question - how do you get your 580EX II to work in a softbox?
I just bought a Photoflex Flash trigger/receiver and it didn't work. When I take a picture using my Canon 50D the flash isn't firing off and when I pressed the test button on the trigger the flash did fire.
It's just whenever I take a picture, the flash isn't firing. is there some sort of special setting that I need to do on my camera?
If you can help me, that would be great. Thank you.
@jigsawpk the in-camera flash sets of pre flashes a split second before the shutter goes. these send a signal to the external flash after the camera calculates the required amount of light (it does this all within less than a second). For this reason, the light from the in-camera flash has to be within range of the external unit, so the receiver can pick it up. something like the su-800 uses infra-red instead, so you have a much longer range and can use it on really sunny days.
I looked all over the net, and couldn't get any help on how to get started with using the D300s and SB 900 as off-camera flash. Your video is the only resource that shows how to get started and get it right ! Thank you so much. I was intimidated by the thoughts of the settings, but your video put me at ease !
Hello Chris Rutter, I have a d90 and just bought a sb 700. I cannot work it ou how to do an off camera flash , i have read the manuals and seen your tutorials repeatedly but i just cant work it out .
@JLGALON It's very easy. I'll be making a video on how to use wireless flash using SB700. The method Chris showed on the menu of D300 is the same except on SB700 you simply switch the button from ON to REMOTE. Once you're on Remote, the flash will work as a slave unit. If you still can't figure it out, then subscribe for my videos as I'll be doing a video on this and other flashes like SB600, SB800 and SB900 along with other tutorials.
genessa5,... your on camera flash is not firing for flash purposes rather for signaling to the remote flash. it will not light up your subject because it's firing milliseconds before, again just as a signal or trigger.
@trutec .... Your right! I just did a little experiment and the on-camera flash doesn't fire for flash purposes. If you use the same exposure with the off-camera flash off, you'll get the same results because the flash on the built in camera flashes before the photo is taken. Ahhhh nice one! I always had this problem. Thank you!
You explain this so well. I have a new canon Rebel t2i and I don't know if I have that feature. How do I find that out? Thank you so much for explaining!

Thank you very much for this really informative video. Following your video I was able to have my remote flash setup and working in just a few minutes.
thanks so much !!! i have both the same camera and flash and i never knew about these features 1!! you explained it really well 1!! thank you !!
BUT, i did everything exactly as you said an my on camera flash still fires !? do you know why this could be and what i can do to stop it ? thanks again :)
Hello i have a Pentax kx and wondering if i am able to use a YN-460 flash without a separate remote and receiver. The camera has a mode that says "fire the built in flash as master in the wireless mode ". Will it work with the flash?
Hope someone can help, i have the Nikon D300 and when i turn my in built flash off like Chris, it leaves 1/1 in the comp colum, whereas Chris' changes to 0.
So everytime i fire, it fires my inbuilt flash at the same time and blows out the subject!!! any ideas
@STLHRC yer but if you turn ur on camera flash off, then there'll be no change in effect annyway, all its then doing is sending the signals to the slave.
Very informative video. However you could have made the video half as short if you would have gone directly to setting up the flash for remote use which is what I wish you did.
Secondly, would you happen to know if you can setup a Nikon SB600 remotely with a D5000?
Hi, just wanted to you, you seem very experienced with SB-800, I have just bought one and first time i used it with D300s, flash goes off lightly 3 times n real flash burst happens...I have i explained myself, flash goes off 1 2 3....in a quick mode n real flash burst happens...how can i stop that 1 2 3 n just have 1 flash happen? what am I doing wrong?
@Lumixster these are the preflashes to prevent red eye and to correctly set the power of the flash if you want to turn this off press and hold your popup flash button and use the thumb wheel to change it to the flash symbol without the eye
You know, everytime I read people's comments on how to videos I'm absolutely fucking amazed at how many people DO NOT READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL. Look, I've never considered myself a photographer but read the instruction manuals. All of this I already knew before seeing the video. I ame in here looking for ideals on what angle to set up with and got something out of it. What I didn't get was how to turn the damn function on. The instructions in the manuals are quite clear.
Can you please tell me what remote flash trigger I can use for when I am out of range of the IR signal? I have a Nikon D80 and Nikon SB 800 flash. Please make a few suggestions, as I am a poor person and cannot buy the most expensive thing out there and eat at the same time.
There is a question where to purchase triggers for $10. They are called "optical wireless triggers." They work as slave triggers for your off camera flash. I bought mine on ebay for around $10 each, postage included. They work great indoors. I doubt they work outside because they have to pick up the light from your master. You can use your on camera flash for the master. My nikon d40 lets me set my on camera flash. And I set it for 1/32 power. Only misfires are when flash doesn't recycle
You could also look for a flash with a PC firing cord (my SB 600 doesn't have one) and run a physical cord from your cam to your flash to fire it off.
Or you could get a shoe-mount slave for your flash too, which would fire off the flash when it detects another flash, like that from your cam.
The transmitter thing might work best, but goddamn is it expensive!
@archedmandible Me too, I thought "commander mode" meant you still needed to buy a trigger, I just got my SB-600 and it works great with my D90 like this.
I used my SB-600 to shoot a Christmas lime and to my horror found everyone's eyes were closed or closing in almost every shot.
Apparently Commander mode flashes twice; Once to send wireless data and the second time when the shutter actually opens.
BUT... I found that rolling up a small piece of exposed film and taping it onto my pop-up flash blocks the light of the flash, but still allows the infra-red data to pass through and trigger the SB-600.
That is because you need to turn off the modeling flash on your camera. It fires before you take the pictures almost always insuring you get that stupid almost closed eye shot.
What you're thinking of is the 'Flash Value' flash. That can be avoided by using FV Lock.
But even with FV Lock on and 'Built-in Flash' set to '- -' (as in the video), the pop-up flash STILL fires a fraction of a second before the main flashes. Trust me.
Or try it yourself; Point your cam and your remote flash toward yourself and keep your eyes open as you trigger. You'll see happen.
I have a nikon d40. i bought some slave flashes on ebay. I use my on camera flash set at 1/32 power as the master. it triggers my slave flashes. I also bought some optical wireless triggers (about $10 including shipping) and purchased some cheaper flashes on ebay. using the same on camera flash set up i can trigger multiples flashes for fairly reasonable amounts of money.
For the cost difference, you're better off just getting another SB-900 rather than an SU-800. Only slightly higher price, more versatile because you can rotate and angle the head (you can't on the SU-800), and it's a flash too for if you've ever shooting with a body that does have a buit-in flash that can be used as a commander.
lol this is terrible.. just say that the "flashgun" or stobe as we call it in the USA is triggered by the light of the flash on the camera theres no magical sensor in the "flashgun" to sense that youre taking a pic, theres a light sensor...
@enjoytheridedc Except that there isn't... Nikon as well as Canon have a much more sofisticated communication protocoll than the "oh, there was some ligth, fire the flash" schema used on older flash units and most studio flashes.
The camera actually communicates flash power etc for each photo so that you can use full auto mode just as you could with the flash on the camera...
He shows you at 2:04 (begins with turning menu on). Of course it depends on your model camera. I have a D70 and the pop up flash will not fire in commander mode regardless. There isn't any way to adjust it or turn it on like the D300.
I bought a Vivitar DF400MZ and it works fine with it. I now see a purplish/yellow bar from where i was looking directly into the flash when setting it up :(.
THANK YOU. finally someone that makes each step clear and precise. Not everyone that has great equipment has experience to go along. Some beginners buy high end and don't know the basics!
Thank you for easy explanation of basic off flash setting. I tried with my D90 and SB-900. It works, but...built in flash still fires :( Why? I did all you said here, but it still fires.
I don`t think is very appreciate to call someone you don`t know "idiot". It seems like you are too proud of yourself, but remember you are not the one on YT. Again, I did what you showed so... who is idiot here. You may not know D90 model.
I find this video to be good and informative, but I think it should have gone more into light diffusion. It's just my opinion here, but I feel like direct flash is always far to unflattering. I would suggest an attachable soft box, or diffuser like the gary fong lightsphere or whale tail .
Thanks so much! I've been attempting to accomplish this using Nikon's user manual for a while with no luck. This has me up and running within 4 minutes. Awesome! Thanks!

Thank you very much. I learnt a lot from that as I have the same camera and flash unit.

lol this is terrible.. just say that the "flashgun" or stobe as we call it in the USA is triggered by the light of the flash on the camera theres no magical sensor in the "flashgun" to sense that youre taking a pic, theres a light sensor...
enjoytheridedc 2 years ago
@enjoytheridedc Except that there isn't... Nikon as well as Canon have a much more sofisticated communication protocoll than the "oh, there was some ligth, fire the flash" schema used on older flash units and most studio flashes.
The camera actually communicates flash power etc for each photo so that you can use full auto mode just as you could with the flash on the camera...

QUESTION: how do i make it so that the built in flash does not flash. only the external flash flashes.. THANKS!!!
surferbro13 2 years ago
what kind of camera do you have? usually there is a flash options menu in the settings to disable built in flash.
or more normally if you have one in the hot shoe it disables it automatically.
Kingsnake1 2 years ago
He shows you at 2:04 (begins with turning menu on). Of course it depends on your model camera. I have a D70 and the pop up flash will not fire in commander mode regardless. There isn't any way to adjust it or turn it on like the D300.

I bought a Vivitar DF400MZ and it works fine with it. I now see a purplish/yellow bar from where i was looking directly into the flash when setting it up :(.

THANK YOU. finally someone that makes each step clear and precise. Not everyone that has great equipment has experience to go along. Some beginners buy high end and don't know the basics!

simuneer Thank You :) Appreciate someone "normal". In D90 even if you do what video says it shows in Mode (--) and in Comp dimmed (1/1) not empty.
akeu08 2 years ago
Thank you for easy explanation of basic off flash setting. I tried with my D90 and SB-900. It works, but...built in flash still fires :( Why? I did all you said here, but it still fires.
akeu08 2 years ago
Thats because you left it switched on you idiot. In commander mode in the D90 you can switch the on camera flash off.
nzrockdj 2 years ago
I don`t think is very appreciate to call someone you don`t know "idiot". It seems like you are too proud of yourself, but remember you are not the one on YT. Again, I did what you showed so... who is idiot here. You may not know D90 model.

The D90 will always do some pre-flashes to measure exposure (TTL) and to communicate with the SB-900.
These flashes will not influence the actual exposure on the image if you have turned this flash of in the menus.

thanks
mkz24 2 years ago
akeu, pay no attention to nzrockdj, the on camera falsh on the D90 will fire a tiny flash. Annoying but it should not have an effect on your results.

I am having the same problem :(

I find this video to be good and informative, but I think it should have gone more into light diffusion. It's just my opinion here, but I feel like direct flash is always far to unflattering. I would suggest an attachable soft box, or diffuser like the gary fong lightsphere or whale tail .
