The shit I grew up listening to just puts ALL of todays so-called hip-hop to shame..hell,it isnt even close. Lil Wayne? Give me a break! Tupac,Biggie,NWA,Public Enemy,Too Short,DOC etc. vs todays shit...not even close! Its like comparing the Lakers to a high school team. Hip-hop died when Pac died. Period.
new school is corrupting everybody, you have 14 year old boys wid knives thinking they 20 + ready to shank up, you have 13 year old girls and younger sucking D**** instead of Lollipops, it might sound good but people only care about that nothing else lyrics don't seem to matter, tupac tried changing the world but no one payed attention to what he said until it was too late. i cant change the world but i can spark someone who can tryna save my gen but i need help sub me plz tracks coming soon !"
@lucidwayne i hope you are kidding because the geto boys are one of the greatest, and scarface will murder any maninstream artists lyrically and literally! and i could never respect your opinion with that name!
I agree that the 90's are better, but for the camparison your choosing the most annoying songs for today's rap, theres a lot of new good hip hop artist out that werent on this.
@jesseelf That's because there is a difference between Hip-Hop and rap. That's why I chose this title There are some dope artists out today but that vid would be called 90's Hip-Hop vs Today's Hip-Hop get me?
Alright. Definitely a fan of the 90's stuff more than the current crap. But I'm a fan of Swizz Beatz.... You just chose a really shitty song from him. I will admit, I like his work with other artists than his own stuff, though.
I'm not a rap/hip-hop fan at all... I could care less about rap/hip-hop, but if I liked it... the rap/hip-hop from the 90s is MORE creative and more better than today's crappy stuff.
you used all the shit modern stuff i wanted to see some new vinnie paz, immortal technique, some roots or tech n9ne in there :) but yeah 90's rap over commercial modern rap however underground is where true lyricism lies people!
Lame you pulled out all the worse artists of current times. You should post J. Cole, Drake, Emenim, B.O.B, Jay-z and like more of the modern (rappers) Not club banger makers very bias... add a jay electronica to that mix and your opinion on current hip hop might change. All the good rappers aren't born rich like soulja boy. And you also could of picked a better Lil'wayne song like 6 foot 7...
Southern rappers did not kill the game blam the young ass kds that don't care about about lyrical content stlye or flow. The media and radio put want they want on and that's what sales.Hip hop has gone to the masses instead of the masses coming to it.Hip hop was never for mainstream we did our own thing, and if you liked it good if you didn't oh well. Now we have lame cats with no heart ,and they have sold out for more gold ropes and cars.Noone cares about the art anymore.
Thers no way in hell you can compare the Legendary Rappers of the 90s, Naughty by nature, 2Pac,Biggie Smalls,Eazy-E,Big Daddy kane and so on to todays pussy cat clowns. LilWayne Who? Souljah who? hurricane who? Flo Ridah who? Man dont even start.
The "hip hop" you see in the charts is a culmination of the loss of values in people in recent years, resulting in materialistic lyrics and a loss of intellectualism, and a distinct shift towards music for the club, which explains the crude and basic beats.
Hip hop still lives on, just not in the mainstream. People want a song they can dance to, not a song that can provoke thought.
K this issue is beginning to piss me off. There is so much amazing music 2day u just have to know where to look 4 it. Shad, Eyedea, Mos Def, Common Market, J. Cole, Lupe Fiasco, Apathy, and Jurassic 5 are all amazing rappers. Do ur fucking research b4 u diss all modern music. This video just took the absolute worse of all hip-hop 2day to try and make it look like hip-hop is dead. When in reality Hip-hop will never die.
@ScottyHenderson1 Nah its just showing how pathetic mainstream is today opposed to back in the day. Of course there are numerous artists these days that are amazing, but 90% arent mainstream u kno what im sayin?
@ObombOA Ya but that's the problem, as soon as the mainstream begins to fail people just say that hip-hop is dead. There shouldn't be a underground and mainstream, there should only be good music and bad music.
@ScottyHenderson1 Oh for sure, i completely agree with you, i wish the music world was like that. Just ignore the people who jus say hip-hops dead cause they obviously dont understand what their saying.
@ScottyHenderson1 Agreed. Hip hop is very much alive. Its just underground where people can appreciate real music: Atmosphere, Cyne, Nieve, Soul Providers, J-Zone, Celph titled, Louis Logic, Fermented Reptile, Diverse, Macklemore, Surreal, Iron Lyon, Soul Square, Tha Connection, Incise, etc.
Woohoo, I thought I was the only one preaching the life of hip-hop. The annoying side of youtube is reading these comments about hip-hop being dead or people who disrepect music as a whole. Keep spreading the word man as I will too.
@MasterBuhi Well here's the thing, music is made to be relevant to the listeners as well as the generation that will most likely be buying the music. Take someone like kid cudi for example. Obviously he's no Big L or 2pac. However when i listen to his music i can relate to what he's saying and honestly his music has gotten me threw some hard times in my life. However there are lots of amazing "hard" rappers 2day as well. Just listen to Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks, or R.A. the rugged man
@tiarsha1986 haha xD, you might like political hiphop, look into immortal technique, diabolic, vinnie paz , blue scholars and from there you will find more artists.

21sttnmemphis - You're saying what I've been telling my kids bro... Today's Music totally sucks. All about sex, money, drugs, killings, etc... 80's and 90's hip-hop was all story telling yo... made you listen while you were grooving to it. Made you feel good and it was very creative. People now days don't even know what "Hip-Hop" is. They think it's a category where rap music is found. Hip-Hop is a way of life! From the music you listen to, to the peeps you hung out with, down to the dress
Today's rappers can say what they want to do BUT I don't buy their CD's because they have no range they say the same thing (money, cars, b.....s)
90's WAS WAY BETTER music because you either educated about AIDS, having a good relationship, go to college, stay out of jail, just have a good time. They were creative in using jazz, funk, rock beats in their music
if you dont like what you hear then just dont entertain the thought of the shit you might not like later. its not the artist trust me its the us. just because the artist's that we made hot because we thought it was koow for the moment stuck around. have any of yall seen the shit soulja boy puts on you tube? he really dont know he suck, but its not him its us, because we feed into it. let him die off. but(stop blaming hip hop for our mistakes)
comparing Andre 3000 and Big Boi to Soulja Boy and A-rab or whatever he refers to himself as is trivial. I could just as easily compare Vanilla Ice to Superfire and make it seem like the 90's were whack. let's encourage some real debate
@byaaaw3 haha vanilla ice is still alot better then todays music, your comment is void and sheep like. He compared some popular ish of today to popular ish of the 90's. Vanilla ice may have been popular for you but you also probably listen to todays trash on the radio, so you havent changed. Damn even mc hammer was better then todays crap.
@hoekone hey bud, thanks for not comprehending anything I said, but deciding to comment anyways. I listen to neither Vanilla Ice or today's "trash on the radio". All I'm saying is that comparing Outkast to Soulja Boi is about as relevant as comparing a 5 star restaurant to Denny's
this is like the 90s Bulls vs todays Bulls todays there are a few dope mcs just like there are a few nice bulls players but the 90s bulls are just beast!!!!
i was born in 1976 and back then it was called rap music, now in the 90's it became hip-hop. I'm confused cause someone argued with me that hip hop has always been and rap music is the new thing. Please explain this to me
@alilprincess22 Hip hop is a culture. So,if you call it hip hop, your wrong. However, its okay to call it hip hop music.Today, its hip POP or candy rap,no matter what anybody says. But,the music of hip hop is rap.Always has been till now.I used to be a Dj,and everybody got pissed when I called it hip hop.
@alilprincess22 i say it like this, rap is what a hip hop artist does, he doesnt hip hop when he rhymes he raps or mcees. So its hip hop music but when they spit they rap imo. No one hip hops when the rhyme, it sounds silly.
wow I have never seen a more bias vid than this. why didnt the poster of this vid post retarted rap songs in the 90's that were stains in hip hop...lets see vanilla ice, mc hammer, dmx (woof woof lmao...) those rappers r the equivalent to soulja and hurricane chris.
I see da kid couldnt seem to list any good rappers from modern 2000's.
@sandsmirage i think his comparing what was popular back then to whats popular today (to people into hip hop, not pop culture), i dont think its biased. Even if you included mc hammer dmx and vanilla ice in there todays music is still trash.
Also content, todays music is sending the wrong message, hip hop wasnt created to send the wrong messages, gangsta rap started screwing all that up and now every mc thinks they are a gangsta.
AH YEAH 90's all day! i'm only 22, born in 88', anyway i grew up in the 90's i just gotta say from experience, it all was so much better back then, beats, rhymes, flows, and plus everybody was talkin bout' somthin' back then because they had somethin' important to say, not like today with all the dances, money, cars, ho's, and all the saggin skinnys, and the bright colors, and pop mixed in with hiphop i mean what's up with that?
@JuggaloKaez216 ur a juggalo idiot? then u must have listened to ice ice baby in the 90's ;) which was as i recall the highest selling rap track of all time. oh yeah and if i recall rappers in the 90's WERE in fact rapping about riches and bitches...i believe your savior 1pac was too? Bias punk...u 90's rap fanboys need 2 quit living in the past and swallow the fact modern rap is good and quit using soulja boy and hurricane chirs as ur examples bias assholes
ever notice how 90's hip-hop just makes you bob your head and make you feel good...and new shit just makes you all confused about whats going on in the song.
@chichomega This is true. I'm a child of the 70s so 80s and 90s rap in my era. I like some of the new stuff but the "Old School" is the best. That's just my opinion. I give props to these young kids on the seen. Hopefully some of them will get back to basics..... It's not always about you dick and some girl, your chain, your watch, your car, your G5 or any of that "rented shit".....It's about the hip hop, telling a story that people can relate to....
I def agree today's hip hop is not collectively what it used to be. There's some good conscious (or faux-conscious) artists/songs but commercialism has taken over the industry, no doubt. Buuuuuuttttt.... on the other hand let us not forget the song that started it all: Rapper's Delight. Its undeniably hip hop, n at the same time they talk about money, cars, girls, etc. Imo it's all hip hop, just different subgenres. But the beat rappers like Swizz n Soulja Boy can't even be called lyricists lmao
I dont think snoops sensual song deserves to be in the 2009 crap department as that song is really kinda cool and it's also not a hiphop or a rap song. But aside from that i agree completely as hiphop is not what it used to be :(
all this new stuff is "okay" but it pretty much has all the same sound, and the same messgae, killin shit, bitches and hoes, smokin dope. Only a few now are worth listening to like jay-z empire state of mind or eminem im not afraid. they talk about real problems that happen. talking about real people, not stupid shit like "I can make your bedrock" that's bullshit. You can say whatever you want but, 80's and 90's music was way better than today's crap.
@laddog14 lil wayne gets owned by everyone.. how can you litsten to that sore throat? i bet ur like a 14-15 yr old kid that listens 2 wayne only coz hes on the radio.. listen to em's No Love and compare lil wayne with em.. and you will see who is a proper rapper
Uhhh, there is no comparison. There are only one or two real mc's today whereas the 90's had numerous real MC's!! Big, Pac, Nas, Outkast, Wu and Cube just to name a few! And they all had their OWN sound!!
@andrethethrashe why u call them niggers then??? dont call artists wit that name lol what bout g-funk and jazz-hiphop mixes??? not all rap is dark n has swearwords in it...
I'm digging this,man....Brand Nubian is the man. My favorite is Krs-One the teacher, man. Check out my video "His is Hip-Hop Music.Let me know what you think, man The Vet
the 90s was ghetto tracks, the 00s was club tracks but either way its still 10 years of the same old shit.
i like hip-hop but this notion of goin *back* to what hip-hop used to be is bullshit. i want producers to start making fresh, experimental, inovative stuff iv never heard before.
in the words of mike skinner "lets push things forward".
Is modern hiphop just turning into punk rock where kids say they like it just to be rebellious or do they really get any musical pleasure from it? 90s rap sounds like its created by humans whereas the modern stuff has no soul and is very mechanical. If I was a parent I would have to switch the electric off rather than listen to that noise. 80s & 90s parents had it good.
damn i'm 14 and my generation of rap sucks and it just gets worst. lyrically MCs are just like stories and prehistoric things from your seventh grade social studies book because most of the catz now dayz just rappers and pop images not true icons of hip hop. this is what happens when u let enough southern niggaz in the game
@SuperMe4lyfe Dont blame southern rap, blame the industry and the sheep fans that follow it. Great rappers such as outkast have come out of the south.
@SuperMe4lyfe Problem with southern rap alot of its quite revolved over materialism. Some talk about moneys ok, nearly all rappers do it to some extent it's just the most of the popular mainstream southern rappers talk about nothing but.
@Cenon2007 I know what ya sayin. Rappers either talk bout bred, hoes, or some material thing. Its bad enough they talk of nuthin uplifting, but on top of that, they can't rhyme for shit which is sad. And some shitty rappers in the game aren't even down south. they're all over.
@SuperMe4lyfe Damn dude! I got TONS of respect for you after reading that comment! You are one of the very few teens that actually has some common sense.
I like some new rappers (clipse, psycho realm, young jeezy, murda mook) All different sides and coasts but im sure people who really into rap kno that mainstream gets stomped by dat classic shit any day... If you tired of all new rappers its time you admitt you aint into it no more.. And for dat hip pop people will someday snap out of it when they realize it slowly evolved into pop
This was a biased comparison mix. 90s conscious music was compared to 2000s club music. This is an apples to oranges comparison, I mean compare 90s conscious rap to 2000 conscious rap and 90s club music to 2000s club music. Otherwise you do us music heads a disservice.
i mean..Swizz Beats is OK. A lot of guys are better producers... I mean, Fabolous is good, Clipse is good, Slaughter House (along with Joell Ortiz) is good, there are a few good guys , but no one can get airplay. I will say the mix tapes are the key ... then there's MF Doom, and that group. Its about content, lyricism ... others are good, but start acting (Common and to a certain degree Xzibit)
Hip hops alive you just gotta look. its everywhere pretty much our whole music culture is based on hip hop. its never going to be the 90s again but you can still bump 90s rap for all them og's n shit out there. I think theres alot of talented rappers out there
2:43-3:26 BY FAR surpasses any song with how deep the lyrics are and how is flow is so perfect with the beat. that my friends is REAL HIP HOP . . . :D
This is a great video, and although during the 80's and 90's there was a lot of heat I don't think that it was just about the times. This is really hip hop vs pop. Hip hop never really went anywhere but the good stuff just went underground. It's true that back in the day good tunes got some air play, but there was still pop then too. MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, and although Young MC did have talent what sold were his pop joints.
The end made me sad.. Seriously WTF happnd to Snoop?!?!?! How can he go from "Deep Cover" to making songs with katty perry?!?!?! WTF??? COME BACK SNOOP!!!!
The music The "Rap-Hip Hop" now days has lost its essence, its purpose, originality, and culture that once existed in the 90's...The Lil wayne, Souljah Boy, Drake music is pure garbage, egotistical, bragging, bullshit, Birdman would of never been able to get on HOT 97 in the 90's.....What happened to real hip hop?
I think for all of you who claim that hip hop is dead and that there is no real rap, you need to start looking elsewhere than the mainstream. You're crying and whining that you they do not play good hip hop on the radio, I find this very enlightening.
Period.

@hoekone hey bud, thanks for not comprehending anything I said, but deciding to comment anyways. I listen to neither Vanilla Ice or today's "trash on the radio". All I'm saying is that comparing Outkast to Soulja Boi is about as relevant as comparing a 5 star restaurant to Denny's

i was born in 1976 and back then it was called rap music, now in the 90's it became hip-hop. I'm confused cause someone argued with me that hip hop has always been and rap music is the new thing. Please explain this to me
alilprincess22 1 year ago
@alilprincess22 Hip hop is a culture. So,if you call it hip hop, your wrong. However, its okay to call it hip hop music.Today, its hip POP or candy rap,no matter what anybody says. But,the music of hip hop is rap.Always has been till now.I used to be a Dj,and everybody got pissed when I called it hip hop.
TheOldtimesrule 1 year ago
@alilprincess22 i say it like this, rap is what a hip hop artist does, he doesnt hip hop when he rhymes he raps or mcees. So its hip hop music but when they spit they rap imo. No one hip hops when the rhyme, it sounds silly.

wow I have never seen a more bias vid than this. why didnt the poster of this vid post retarted rap songs in the 90's that were stains in hip hop...lets see vanilla ice, mc hammer, dmx (woof woof lmao...) those rappers r the equivalent to soulja and hurricane chris.
I see da kid couldnt seem to list any good rappers from modern 2000's.
sandsmirage 1 year ago
@sandsmirage i think his comparing what was popular back then to whats popular today (to people into hip hop, not pop culture), i dont think its biased. Even if you included mc hammer dmx and vanilla ice in there todays music is still trash.
Also content, todays music is sending the wrong message, hip hop wasnt created to send the wrong messages, gangsta rap started screwing all that up and now every mc thinks they are a gangsta.
hoekone 1 year ago
AH YEAH 90's all day! i'm only 22, born in 88', anyway i grew up in the 90's i just gotta say from experience, it all was so much better back then, beats, rhymes, flows, and plus everybody was talkin bout' somthin' back then because they had somethin' important to say, not like today with all the dances, money, cars, ho's, and all the saggin skinnys, and the bright colors, and pop mixed in with hiphop i mean what's up with that?
JuggaloKaez216 1 year ago
@JuggaloKaez216 ur a juggalo idiot? then u must have listened to ice ice baby in the 90's ;) which was as i recall the highest selling rap track of all time. oh yeah and if i recall rappers in the 90's WERE in fact rapping about riches and bitches...i believe your savior 1pac was too? Bias punk...u 90's rap fanboys need 2 quit living in the past and swallow the fact modern rap is good and quit using soulja boy and hurricane chirs as ur examples bias assholes

chichomega 1 year ago 16

Only a few now are worth listening to like jay-z empire state of mind or eminem im not afraid. they talk about real problems that happen. talking about real people, not stupid shit like "I can make your bedrock" that's bullshit. You can say whatever you want but, 80's and 90's music was way better than today's crap.

i like hip-hop but this notion of goin *back* to what hip-hop used to be is bullshit. i want producers to start making fresh, experimental, inovative stuff iv never heard before.
in the words of mike skinner "lets push things forward".
homer091 1 year ago
Is modern hiphop just turning into punk rock where kids say they like it just to be rebellious or do they really get any musical pleasure from it? 90s rap sounds like its created by humans whereas the modern stuff has no soul and is very mechanical. If I was a parent I would have to switch the electric off rather than listen to that noise. 80s & 90s parents had it good.

Cenon2007 1 year ago
@Cenon2007 Yeah. You got a point there.
SuperMe4lyfe 1 year ago
@SuperMe4lyfe Problem with southern rap alot of its quite revolved over materialism. Some talk about moneys ok, nearly all rappers do it to some extent it's just the most of the popular mainstream southern rappers talk about nothing but.
Cenon2007 1 year ago
@Cenon2007 I know what ya sayin. Rappers either talk bout bred, hoes, or some material thing. Its bad enough they talk of nuthin uplifting, but on top of that, they can't rhyme for shit which is sad. And some shitty rappers in the game aren't even down south. they're all over.
